He also coined "Global Village", and the problem with twitter is that it makes you realize that there's one hell of a lot of village idiots in the village.
The intelligent man realizes that he's surrounded by idiots. The wise man knows that he's one of them.
Whining about "shelling out" for sending a letter had me rolling my eyes. How important can a note be if the sender doesn't think it's worth a quarter to send it.
Constant picture taking of the average persons property is considered harassment.
This happens all the time anyhow. I'm not certain that actually knowing about it and having access to those images makes it worse. You could argue that the ubiquitous public availability in itself is a bad thing, but I don't think I'm alone in saying that I trust my "neighbor" more than I trust law enforcement or shadowy military organizations.
But then I'm not claiming that my housing development is still farmland.
Of course, they didn't have as many global warming alarmists around when that happened.
Well to be fair science wasn't such a political football back then either. How many comments, like yours, are there in this story alone where someone makes an informed and reasonable post, only to follow it up with a statement (for the record, apparently?) of which side they're on. Of course you're probably too busy hating black people to realizDO YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE?

It is approximately the on the same scale, to the oceans, as that of a candy bar in a swimming pool.
Interesting. That's fucking enormous.
And it will cause almost as much excitement.
That was kind of a weird comment. Nobody knows exactly what's going to happen because this hasn't happened in living memory. What would you have to gain with a "nothing to see here"?
UNLESS you're a real estate speculator who's bought "seafront property" in Nevada! You manipulative bastard!... I want in.
I posited a conservative $10/hr when I came up with that week. You're not "saving" any money by doing your own work, not if you could be earning money doing the same thing or something else at the same time. It's the same idea with buying a cheap car. You'll save money up front but will lose money in the long run in maintenance costs.
Now, if you're a hobbyist and like the idea of screwing around with your machine this argument doesn't hold for you. But then you wouldn't be the average user in the average circumstances.
Theres a sweet spot between the computer novice and the master where a win7 laptop would entirely make sense. For anyone else you'd either want the easy learning curve of a mac or the flexibility it provides (all three major OSs running at the same time, on the same machine? Yes please).
A brief aside: whether you go with Mac or Win GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. There simply isn't any hardware manufacturer with decent quality control these days. The best customer service I've seen has been, hands down, Toshiba, followed by Apple at a respectful distance. Everyone else is a crapshoot. DO NOT BUY ANY FORM OF MICROSOFT ASSISTANCE.
Always remember that your time is valuable. If you save $500 on a laptop but end up dicking around with it for a week over its lifetime you have not made a wise decision.
Since you run memcached maybe you can answer this. From what I've read it seems like an alerted (or just savvy) admin could easily detect this kind of futzing and (if you're lucky just) inject honey directly onto your machine. Attempting to maliciously write to memcached seems equally problematic. You'd never know if you were successful or just seeing what someone wanted you to see. How off base am I?
Hmm, I think you missed my point. I'm saying that the mainstream representation of our political system isn't wide enough to encompass everyone's point of view, so reference must be made to systems outside it in order to discuss certain perspectives.
You seem to be saying that there aren't any points of view in America outside of our two-party system. Frankly, I don't understand how you can hold this belief (if I understand you correctly).
I think the point is that the political spectrum is much broader than we're really allowed to see. Even within our own country. Since our choices are severely limited we can't really even discuss liberal politics without bringing up european countries as examples. Spreading a meme that "Obama is a Socialist", essentially redefining center-right policies as far-left, means that you've removed a huge swath of the continuum from the conversation.
It's not that people "care" about european politics, per se, it's just that some Americans have to go that far afield to find political discourse that matches their point of view. The prevailing "fuck them if they don't agree with me" attitude in America is a Real Bad Idea if we want to keep running a democracy.
Here you go. About 100 years since Republicans garnered the significant majority of black votes, and about 70 years since the Democrats began claiming that majority. Racially speaking, Republicans shot themselves in the foot with Goldwater and still haven't recovered. They're doing it again with the Arizona immigration issue.
You're certainly entitled to your own beliefs, but should probably ask yourself why most minorities vote for the "racist" party.
I suppose it is the same way that people perceive that the party that ended slavery in this country, championed passing a Civil Rights Act, and in other ways worked to eliminate racism in this country is more racist than the party that fought to extend slavery, founded the KKK, resegregated the Federal Government, passed Jim Crow laws and in many other ways worked to maintain blacks as second class citizens.
How long are you going to ride those hundred year old coattails?
Actually just buying renters insurance (cheap) and getting to know your neighbors (real cheap) will cover 99% of your concerns. You might also question the wisdom of moving to an area where you earn significantly more than your peers.
What you really need to do is ask yourself how much paranoia your stupid hdtv is worth.
What's interesting to me is that we've been seeing very similar behavior in MMOs that offer robust auction systems, especially within the past few months.
When the majority of the world's oil came from the Persian Gulf the region was nice and stable, because the British and then the Americans made it stable.
Anyone who's had a paper returned because their citation section had a misplaced comma or period can tell you exactly how meaningful and important style guides are ("not at all" and "more than your thesis", respectively). The trick is to be able to choose a style that matches your writing;)
Seriously though, if you're writing for publication the editor will change whatever stylistic choices you've been brought up with to whatever they've decided on anyhow, so why even worry about it? I'd be more concerned that most professional writing sucks ass.
1) You assume parents aren't invested in the education of their children simply because they have no financial incentive. Parents aren't invested because nobody in America gives two shits about education. Here's a simple litmus test you can use for your local area. We've known for a while now that, especially in high school, starting school later in the day provides a massive benefit. Has there been any talk in your locale of changing school start times?
2) You're confusing the taunting of young and foolish "libertarians" with a serious political philosophy. In my above comment the sarcasm isn't directed at the concept of a free market, but rather the people who think it can exist in our country. You cannot have a free market and corporate socialism. They're diametrically opposed. The phrase "too big to fail" could never be uttered in a society with a free market.

Wheras only smart people see the world in terms of fools and smart people
The difference between a fool and a smart person is that the smart person knows he's a fool.
Whining about "shelling out" for sending a letter had me rolling my eyes. How important can a note be if the sender doesn't think it's worth a quarter to send it.
Aha, a fellow punter. Only a matter of thyme before the mods root us out.
As opposed to a self-righteous and smug generation with a sore shoulder from patting itself on the back?
The web will never be able to replicate this.
That's probably going to be your "640k is enough for anyone" moment.

Where I come from we call that sarcasm, legend has it that it's not understood over the pond.
Oh I think that's entirely accurate.

Yeah it's amazing the number of people who feel they have an interesting opinion, isn't it.

I am saying if you want to bring up an alternate point of view, you should have a reason for bringing it up
Ok we're totally missing each other here. Let's just call this conversation and go watch TV or something.

For a given value of stable.

Sac13, there are two problems with your polemic:
1) You assume parents aren't invested in the education of their children simply because they have no financial incentive. Parents aren't invested because nobody in America gives two shits about education. Here's a simple litmus test you can use for your local area. We've known for a while now that, especially in high school, starting school later in the day provides a massive benefit. Has there been any talk in your locale of changing school start times?
