ummm.. you're aware that the bulk of the money of the commercial crew program will be going to the same old contractors that have been sucking of the NASA teat since it was begun right? It's not like pork is a new thing.
Actually the "same old" contractors are now themselves contracting out large portions of contracts. I'm not saying that it's a good thing (pretty much the entire reason for the Boeing 787 delays), and I'm not saying it's a bad thing (those same delays were in part due to the 787 design relying on new materials and techniques which Boeing couldn't have handled in-house), but I am saying that your concept of what's going on is a bit outdated.
The problem is that there are only a handful of American-led companies capable of taking on massive projects like this, so they're the ones who always win bids. If I was in your position I'd be more concerned that the outsourcing of subcontracts goes to American labor. (as an example, or maybe a warning, the car with the most American labor behind it is the Toyota Camry. Buying American?)
So they've gone from mandating a ban to pushing for one now? My point, jackass, was that the ALA isn't in the position to mandate dick.
And the reason that I'm being this pedantic is that that one word changes the entire conversation from one about health and lobbying into one about teabaggers, ACORN, and guns.
There are plenty of priests (of any religion) who do/have/will question their faith. That doesn't make them non-priests (or even bad ones).
There are plenty of soldiers over in the sandbox (god, jargon makes my nipples hard) who don't believe their mission in Iraq is a good idea. That doesn't make them non-soldiers.
There are (apparently) plenty of tech support people who don't have a damn clue as to what goes on inside the magic box. That doesn't make them n... oh wait it does. Screw them.
While I agree with your sentiment I believe that, since it was our own duly elected reps who considered and accepted the RIAA lobbying, we have to ultimately shoulder the blame for allowing the current situation to come to pass.
In other countries we've seen the rise of organizations like the Pirate Party which attempt to reverse this trend, but that approach isn't feasible within our two-party system. I don't think we'll see any real change to the status quo unless the RIAA et al actually get everything they want, at which point the public backlash will make running on an anti-copyright extension platform feasible.
Basically we're screwed and it's our own fault. Our only options are to either suck it up and pay through the nose or easily download free and improved products.
I'm of the opinion that most of your ilk are borderline OCD cases who simply can't wrap their noggin around somebody not following the rules. It's not like you don't understand my position. Lord knows that with your UID you've seen it hashed out again and again. You simply can't bring yourself to believe someone actually holds it. Because of rules.
Well let me tell you something, daldardedge, not everything fits into the neat bubble-wrap case you've made for it in your brain. Life isn't a series of collectible action figures, to be kept mint and safely tucked away each in their own place. Sometimes it takes a slightly broader view than the one you get peering over your viewsonic (yes, im insulting you by saying that, through choice and not necessity, you still own a crt). You need to wake up and realize that you are not the only person on god's green earth, but are rather one of a multitude of opinions and voices. Most of which are telling you to get stuffed.
So crawl back to your masters and let them know that men still exist who are willing to stand against them. That men still exist who are capable of leaning into the rushing tide of corporatism with the firm footing that comes with the knowledge of a righteous cause passionately pursued. Men who apparently write increasingly purple posts on self-important message boards. Men who will take free software, partially because they know it to be a victimless crime, but mostly because fuck you.
You ask that question as if the metaphor speaks for itself, but it doesn't. I'm not a business mogul, but people who are business moguls are pretty good at doing math and finding the cheapest solutions. It strains credulity to say that all the people hiring Indian developers are making unwise business decisions. The only way that could be true is if you personally have superior knowledge and reasoning to all of those business people. That's possible, but unlikely.
The people hiring offshore developers might not be making unwise business decisions, but their clients almost certainly are.
I'm pretty sure the subtext of the study was "we're greedy fucks".* Even gazing longingly at a framed portrait of Ben Franklin would probably work on some people.
*(I know the period belongs inside the quotes, but the programmer in me rebels strenuously. Suck it Mr. Harlan.)
You wanted hope and change? You got it. Hope you like it.
We were hoping he wasn't George Bush, that was pretty much it. The man has always been center-right, and those of us paying attention aren't real surprised at stuff like this. Hell I only voted for the man so I could see half my country lose it's shit. Time to hang up my "mission accomplished" banner yet?
"I believe in morality but I don't think I'm significant enough to have to abide by it".
Can't help but notice that the only time people talk about morality is when they want money. I happen to think that my point of view is entirely moral, but then I suppose our morals must differ. Babypuncher.
While I was just joking re the torrent, I think this is a legitimate reason to pirate the software if you're in the field (or want to be) and not well off. In fact I doubt if Adobe would lose much money if they just made the package free for private individuals. I don't think I'm alone in seeing a difference between personal and corporate copyright violation.
A whitelist for children would be ideal, but "unfortunately" it would have to be one that both the parent and the child worked on together. I just can't see how you could trust some third party to compile a list that would match your ideals as a parent. There isn't a point of view in the world that encompasses both the "HPV vaccine leads to hell my daughter deserves cancer" and "that sound you hear is daddy and Scott doing a very special thing" camps.
I'm afraid he's going to have to raise his kids manually.
Last time I had to hire for a non-programming IT job, the first guy that I turfed the resume into the circular filing bin spouted on and on about his FOSS involvement. And beyond that, he didn't have a fucking class, session, certificate, traning program, or touch of experience in the Real Fucking World that actually shown he would have been useful in a real world corporate office.(emphasis mine)
I can't bring myself to believe that you have 15 years of experience in the IT industry and don't know the real value of these "certificates". They exist solely to help HR tick off the appropriate box on an application.
I've seen plenty of your kind, and they were all asking for five years of Java experience back in 1995.

OT, but I've never understood the bias surrounding the temperature of milk I add to my coffee. Right out of the fridge is ok, out of a room-temp pitcher is alright, heat it up and I'm some hollywood coke-sniffer. You better be drinking your coffee out of a boot, asshole.
What exactly do we think will happen when the most powerful military force in our planet's history is employed in what is essentially a police/intelligence capacity? You're taking equipment and personnel designed and trained to utterly destroy large hardware and many, many people and placing them among a civilian population.
How is this massacre a surprising outcome? Put a jittery, sleep-deprived twenty something behind a machine gun in any populated area and something like this is bound to happen eventually. Poor leadership killed these people and, if you believe in this sort of thing, damned a few kids' immortal souls.

That doesn't make any sense.

Are they a government organization, or are you using a word you don't understand?
Pfft, I've seen things you people wouldn't belive.
Plenty of people live normal, albeit occasionally vulgar, lives with this disorder. Nothing to see here, move on....
Um, I hate to be the first to point this out, but it's pretty obvious that this girl is a vampire.

The in-game musical performances you could put on with other people were a neat idea. I'd like to see more of that kind of thinking from game devs.
You are one humorless motherfucker. I hope there's joy down in Whoville tonight, because there certainly isn't any at your house.

No, the political system in Australia is a disgrace, but is leaps and bounds ahead of that in the US
And this coming from the folks who gave us Rupert Murdoch? I'm going to have to politely disagree.
Aw man, my CS4 torrent had just finally finished.

It's so true. Most actors that I hear trying to bung on an Australian accent, end up sounding really bizarre: like Clare's mum in Lost.
You haven't picked up that they're making fun of you yet?
Young republicans.
I think the phrase "B2: Keep on the Borderlands" should put his argument to rest.
