Libertarianism in a nutshell is opposing the government putting a gun to people's head.
The problem people have with libertarians is that they act like you...
The student loan subsidy are much less than has been paid in taxes anyway. Accepting a student loan subsidy is merely a way to get that a fraction of that money back.
... rather than like Thoreau...
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
You're not a libertarian, you're a Young Republican.
1) Don't forget: the vast majority of college professors are unabashed liberals, if not outright socialists.
There are plenty of conservative professors, they just don't fit into the Jesus and Shotgun ethic that drives the GOP today. When you decide to take an anti-intellectual approach to politics you're going to, surprise, lose the intellectuals.
Assuming that you have to rewrite his software, make it all web based (even if it runs off of one machine as a server without the Internet) and forgetaboutit. Keep it as basic and generic as possible and then the hardware will never matter.
...and then pick a host or service that will be around in a decade or two.
Just like any other sort of job, there will be different cultures in different offices. To say that all police departments are equally corrupt is either incredibly naive or intellectually dishonest.
Any profession that deals with controlling people will have it's problems, but seeing corruption as a boolean is simply a childish view of the world.
I crack up every time I think about those gifts. I can just see the thought bubble over Obama's head as he opens his package first...
And it's not like this hasn't happened to all of us at one point or another:
"Here's a gift certificate to Chili's."
"Here's a hand-knitted sweater I worked on for two years"
This is a great idea if you're coming out of a career at McDonalds or Best Buy.
For everyone else, the answer is to focus on smaller companies (basically, if they have a HR department, they're too big) and use your network of contacts. "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is the antithesis of the techie meritocracy ideal, but it's how the world works and how you will get a job.
We're about 5-10 years behind the rest of the planet when it comes to all things mobile here in the US. Our telecom industry colludes. Don't expect any conversation from us on the subject to really make any sense to you.
Here's a bit more of the timeline from the site... I seem to remember reading that there's no standard format defined for this data, so expect to see a bunch of garbage initially. If you want an easily manipulated database you might have to *shudder* get involved.
July 15, 2009 Recipients of Federal funding to begin reporting on their use of funds
May 20, 2009 Federal Agencies to begin reporting their competitive grants and contracts
May 15, 2009 Detailed agency financial reports to become available
May 03, 2009 Federal Agencies to make Performance Plans publicly available Federal Agencies to begin reporting on their allocations for entitlement programs
March 03, 2009 Federal Agencies to begin reporting use of funds
February 19, 2009 Federal Agencies to begin reporting their formula block grant awards
That, my friend, is the 80's talking. We're way past that stage.
I think one of the confusing points is that geeks feel sites like Craigslist have a solid UI, yet it's basically black words on a white page. It does what it needs to, and loads very fast.
There's a subtle difference between minimalism and not giving a fuck.
Would cops bother you nearly as much if we fixed our laws to legalize what are currently consensual crimes
Just take a look at which organizations show up to protest drug legalization or decriminalization movements, and this will tell you all you need to know.
I don't understand the conspiracy theory here. It just doesn't make sense. [...] It's in the RIAA's best interest to provide accurate time stamps [...] It's in the ISP's best interest to keep accurate time stamps
You don't understand my point, which has nothing to do with conspiracy or intentions. Keeping two systems in sync is not always a trivial matter.

If you think cliches are the hallmark of a bad author I'd advise you to stay the hell away from Shakespeare.
I think it was sort of a "we'll station some of our military over there if you promise not to make any giant robots" kind of a deal.
So far so good.

I'm going to go ahead and distill your comment down to one sentence (which you may or may not agree with):
User Interface is the single most important aspect of any project.
I crack up every time I think about those gifts. I can just see the thought bubble over Obama's head as he opens his package first...
And it's not like this hasn't happened to all of us at one point or another:
"Here's a gift certificate to Chili's."
"Here's a hand-knitted sweater I worked on for two years"
my irritation at being told what I can and can not do overrides my lack of interest in a comic book character
I'd think it would be all the TLAs that would do you in. It's hard enough to tell if you're talking about the same thing already...
Maybe in another century, everyone will understand written Chinese.
Maybe in another century there won't be much of a difference.
Why are you in such a hurry to leave ze DDR?
An excellent question!
It turns out that they fall. It's fascinating. Really.

At least it works like that in Europe.

I think that's a different phenomenon. Something to do with working with as few layers of abstraction as possible, maybe.
(( ob. vi is superior =p ))

So basically you're saying that, since people lie, there's no point in making any rules.
I'm just going to go ahead and disagree with you on that one.
I think the mods were meta-modding me funny by modding me insightful.
Surely I wouldn't get modded insightful just for parroting some BS that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Yeah, we need to let the market sort that out.
The fundamental problem with our current system of education is that we're paying $35k a year for a $75k job.
We simply don't want to pay for the quality we'd like to have. There's no way around that.

Should I get off your lawn?
