You can buy them, or you can just go to a place like this and pick them up off the ground. I head over there once a year when I'm visiting family in the UK, and have a nice little collection of ammonites, mennonites, ichthyosaurus vertebrae, shark teeth, etc. You see a fair number of these made out of iron pyrite too, which is pretty interesting. The area east of Lyme-Regis is particularly cool since an old victorian dump is also being slowly washed onto the beach.
If you're interested in collecting artifacts or fossils there are plenty of places where you can go and do it yourself, legally. It's more interesting, more fun, and a lot more meaningful to have a piece you found yourself sitting on a shelf.
This isn't an exhaustive background on the subject, but it's enough to point you in the right direction. Most of these links are available by googling "greenlight isp". Most of these links, and more like them, have been posted either in this/. article's comments or in the article that ran a few days ago on basically the same subject.
((Googling "Hetch Hetchy" or "Raker Act scandal" also makes for some interesting reading along the same lines))
At the risk of being flamemodded, I would like to add to this. There is a certain impropriety of government using tax money to create competition to the private sector, while relying on the private sector's expensively-designed technology to do all the work, be it last mile*, or just good old Cisco industrial routers. Government pretending to be awesome to the people by doing things like this is nothing new.
That would be a great point if any of it applied to the current situation. Were you to get a little background on the situation you'd see that the people crying govt. interference are the ones being subsidized. I know, I know, major corporations and politicians lying to you... who'd a thunk.
A virtual person is not the same as a real person. That's why you don't go to jail for killing someone in WOW. If you infringe on a trademark you can get in trouble, no matter in what way (using what medium) you did it.
I don't think anyone would argue w/ the accuracy of that statement, but it's interesting to note that we consider some virtual actions "real" and others "fake". If selling a Taser branded torture device online is considered harmful to an entity, you're already making a ton of assumptions on the nature of virtual reality AND beginning an (IMO) irreversible trend in granting legal recognition to silicon real estate. I doubt that there would be any concern if these guys sold a 'choose-your-own-adventure' style book wherein you might buy a Taser, and I wonder where the difference really lies.
I don't know whether or not this is a good thing, but I do know it certainly hasn't been discussed publicly or really thought through in any manner. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
The problem in the US is very low population density[...]
This comes up again and again, as if the population were evenly distributed. I don't know how this meme got started, but it's foolish and needs to stop.
The ability to bypass or ignore all the government imposed tariffs, taxes and fees. The ability to bypass or ignore government mandated zoning, impact and environmental laws and regulations. The unfair advantage of not having to deal with various government boards for right-of-way and zoning permits or waivers. The ability to use eminent domain laws to forcibly confiscate private property.
Sadly, I can't tell if you're talking about the local government or Time Warner.
No, man, you have to have someone to fly the carbon black Briggs-Daimler ultralights past Soviet security so the console jockeys in their Zeiss-Braun helmets can release our Mole VII virus from the Sinclair-Nixdorf decks strapped to them with micropore tape.
It's nothing to do with free speech at all and everything to do with a bunch of juvenile freeloaders wanting to continue their rampant criminality without recourse so don't go trying to dress it up like it is.
So what you're implying is that if I make an investment to provide services to you I shouldn't have domain over the Ts&Cs? If that's the case then I won't make the investment and let the government build out that infrastructure.
You're forgetting the billions given to you on the agreement that you'd build out the infrastructure in the first place. Conveniently forgetting.
Apparently it's socialism only when money flows to someone who isn't you.
Ellison stands on his own tiny pedestal.
Fixed that for you.
We have plenty of honest politicians here in the US, and it's easy to tell who they are. Their names aren't in the paper.
Obama:"We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation." Our currency, national motto, laws, and morals disagree.
The fact that we're the only first world nation with a death penalty just means that we're an ironically Christian nation. It's a hipster thing.
What is the collusion of which you speak?
What synergy do you see between Office and Windows, that disadvantages say Open Office?
Classic astroturf moment.

Window's Genuine Advantage
Ok.
...dammit!
Sure we do, we just go to different bars and don't invite you to our parties.
I watched a morbidly obese guy scooter out of McDonalds with a giant sack of burgers perched on his belly. Is laughing the same as caring?
Wrong analogy. Try: "This bucket has 85% fewer holes than Bucket XP."
And I thought it was the network getting slow, not the computer itself.
I'm waiting to see my computer "jitter and freeze" rather than just timeout.
Maybe if I shake it...
I didn't miss it, dammit, that was a sarcastic reply!
Haha, oh well.
There's a fine line between [citation needed] and wanting someone else to do your homework for you...

It's important that money goes to just a few people because otherwise it's socialism. This is the entirety of my argument.

The problem with anarchy as a way of life is that you must respect my decision to kill you for supporting it.
