They cannot. The single greatest flaw in the GPL is the fact it hurts the people who can do the most for the product. Linux would be much further behind if it were not for the RedHats and the Slackwares. However, you soon reach a critical mass and they're ability to push it along falters and the community collapses. This does not happen when a licenses permits free redistribution.
I thought the California people all used BSD of some variety or another. I thought Linux was just an East Coast and Europe thing.;) I mean, I get all sorts of funny looks for using FreeBSD in DC.
Not likely. I would imagine you would get a mess of people attempting to be "last post" and since once one person does it, they will keep trying until the item is frozen. With first post, once it's done, it's done.
Sorry, I was bored and happened to notice tghat not postings had been made. It's not like that there is anything meaningful in any of the comments posted here.
Then why not run Minix?
Yes, but if I want to distribute my application, I have to provide my source. It is wrong for a developer to force me to do that if I use their code.
Have you ever read the GPL? The GPL does not permit free redistribution. It forces redistribution.
I would really like to see someone accuse the BSD community of fragmentation. How many Linux distributions are there this week?

They also have a Sun 1. It is swank.

Last post! :)
However, Apple said that they were going to occassionally "sync up" OSX and Darwin. Expect a lot of the Darwin hacks to make it back into OSX.
Linux users aren't bright enough to get high ratings.
That's got to be flamebait.
Anyway, lastpost!

It is not a troll! It's not like I got up here and said "Linus blows goats." I mean he may, I don't know. I really don't care.

However, Mach is derived from 4.2BSD.
It would be much nicer if they used an X or BSD style license.
I think it would be interesting to see how many people use it on non-Linux systems.
Don't forget NetBSD with 1.4 released on 12 May.
I can run BSD on all those but the PalmPilot and since I don't have one, it doesn't matter.
There are quite a few of us.
No you wouldn't. The three BSDs would allow you to used GNU tools on an open source platform.
SVR4 was a merging of BSD and SVR3 so any SVR4 based system can be considered a BSD-derivative.
This reminds me, did that project ever get off the ground? I would be interested in helping if possible.
Because when I said I wanted to make my software freely redistributable, I meant it.
And to turn the question around, why do you think you should be able to tell people what they can and cannot do with the software they create?
I need a simple, reliable, easy to work with OS.
No it didn't. Didn't you read the article?
