Well, I guess I could live with it, if all the clones were of Natalie Portman:-)
I guess you would then have a Beowulf Cluster of Natalie Portman... mmm...
About a year ago, my programmers came to me with the suggestion that we begin using the registry for settings storage for our applications. The ONLY reason that was given, was that it was faster than parsing an INI file.
Well, we still use INI or config files to store settings in. Also, custom built dlls, live in the apps directory, not out in win\system32. Pick up our apps, move them to a new drive, run them, they work. Saves on reinstallation expenses for our clients.
Hear! Hear!
The terrorists are winning.
"Soccer Moms" talking about being scared to open their mail at home because of anthrax fear.
Our politicals voting on absurd anti-terror "prevention" measures, out of fear. Fear of looking unamerican/unpatratriotic. Fear of not being re-elected.
Yup, I hear you. I'm tired of the problems.
Waiting the 20 seconds as punishment for being a fast typer.
Re-entering text into a blasted form, because someones code is buggy.
We wrote VB apps to generate pages for our employees with minor interaction. Had some c++ apps that generated html from databases. Its sad this stuff gets in.
This author did a great deal of terrific research to backup his concerns. Props to him, enjoyed the read. We had actually tested Enhydra here, looking at using it for the base of a new product. I think I may still have some of the original cds too. Now if all article submitters to slashdot would do this much research, I might have to start reading more of the stories.
In regards to star office, take a look at Beta 6.
Staroffice 5.x with its integrated desktop garbage was too much for me, but the Beta of version 6 is very nice. No more integrated desktop, but then mail/news client is gone (not a great loss).
I am interested in this topic.
I'v written a number of VB and Foxpro applications that I'v released the source for, and am interested in putting them under the GPL.
Do you have some additional references on the changes ms has made to prevent this?
I've seen a number of posts about projects that seem to have some management issues, so I though I'd throw out a positive reference.
Request Tracker (rt for short) is the project of Jesse Vincent. It is a ticket system, written in perl, front ended by apache and mason (in 2.x) has cli for those that want additional functionality, a bit of an API started, and also accepts ticket submissions by email.
We started using RT here back in the 1.x and are now running 2.x. A LARGE number of current features have come from users and additionally, user submitted code. It is amazing the number of times a message on the rt-users list has mentioned something, and a few hours later a reply from jesse stating that its been added, or a code segment offered by a user gets incorporated in.
So "props to jesse" for managing an open source project the way many of us think it should be done.
has the author ever actually worked in the business world?

Ditto. I remember downloading diskette sets of Slackware MANY years ago.
Protected by a moat of hot grits!

Poor fellow was probably fighting with formkey errors when trying to post it.

Terrorisms number one weapon? Fear.

Blah.
I hadnt had a problem with DirectTV (telocity) until the newsgroup issue. The cap is not only absurd, but there was no warning given.

Using the word processor in Star Office requires THAT much more training than training in Word?
Come on.
Outlook XP couldnt handle all the processing rules I require. I ended up down grading to Outlook 2k.
I'm running the beta of Star Office 6, and non of the co workers have realized that the "great looking" documents were created in Star Office.
But then, I'm the boss. We will move one department here, one department there, slowly, so the desk jockeys wont riot.

You have a URL for more information the Evolution product?
We have ordered over 30,000 megs worth of memory from Crucial in the last year, and have NEVER had a problem.
Before we found them, we used McDonald and Associates out in Iowa. Also a great company worth buying your memory from.
Isnt he the one fighting with a California city because he insisted on flying his private jet into a general aviation airport after hours?
Erector pieces are still nice for adding that 7th ide drives to your 6 bay system..
I've carried a 3.5" double edged, fixed blade knife with me on planes for years. Guess I'll be packing it in my check through luggage from now on.
Now, lets talk about the mace used by the hijackers. Personally, I havent heard anyone banning the carrying of mace yet.

MainActor from the German company MainConcept (www.mainconcept.de) is making good progress.
It is primarily a DV sequencer.
Like all software, it has a few buggies. We have been using the win32 version for almost 9 months now and the linux version since it went into beta.
The forums on the site are open to the public for reading, posting requires a free account.

OAL is confusing me with AOL so some lawyers need to get involved, domains need to change hands....

Code help from the world of Lotus and Lotuscript.
Dude! I wrote nearly the same reply, then thought it was too harsh. But after reading your reply, I think I was mistaken. Your point is well taken.
