Honey bees are an invasive species. They were brought to the Americas in the 1600's. Now people are panicking about colony collapse and trying to save this invasive species. I thought that is how nature works, life seeks out new and better environments to grow in. Does it matter if a bee is blown across the ocean by a hurricane or carried over by a Spaniard? Or if a mussel makes to the great lakes on the bottom of a tanker or on a piece of drift wood?
This is great news for the US as we have lost the ability to put a person in space. So no big deal that the NASA-Congress Bureaucracy can't get our next gen rocket system off the ground.
It would be interesting to catalog all of Slashdots 'incredible solar tech invented!' stories from 20010 and see how much of it actually made it into solar panels and exactly how much it actually improved them. Could also do the same for medical "break throughs".
The number of people on food stamps has more than doubled since 1990. I guess people on food stamps are more likely to keep incumbents in office than scientist so
the money goes to them.

Note we went from spending under 20 billion in 1995 to 70 billion in 2010. The shortfall mentioned in the article that is forcing the shutdowns is 75 million.
I seem to remember a few past slashdot articles on what is causing colony collapse. The causes ranged from cell phones to a DNA-based virus to fungus and now pesticide. What gives me pause about this current theory is that it is linked to the much maligned by the left high fructose corn syrup. How many people would believe a scientific study that linked cancer to abortions? Not many, you would want to know more about the politics of the people doing the study than their scientific credentials. Welcome to science of the 21st century!
I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Using Bluetooth will require some serious battery power
All they need to do is make the watch using those kinetic self-winding mechanisms in it. I gather from the first 100 beating-off-to-porn posts, no slashdotter would have to worry about power again.
Off topic but fuck it. Neo had better have left the matrix. For mine, this whole meta matrix idea would be a piss-weak plot device and a real disappointment.
The third matrix movie ends with Neo in the shower with Larry Hagman.
The startling plot twist in the season finale will be that the doctor will get kidnapped or captured and thrown in an alien prison. I think he is the only main character who hasnt been kidnapped or captured so far in the series.
These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, her five year mission to seek out new life and and get imprisoned by it.
At the same time, I think it can be safely said that many of the people to whom a clear connection has not been established in their minds still entertain the notion that it is possible that human actions have caused the current warming trend, or have exacerbated a natural warming trend.
There have been many ice ages in the earth's past, long before humans ever existed and between each glacial period there was - GLOBAL WARMING! The earth warms and cools, the magnetic pole flips and every so often there is a mass extintion event that wipes out large portions of life (http://www.hi.is/~joner/eaps/tlm.htm). Just get used to it. Planet earth can be a real bitch.
I wonder how many scientist would get funding if they found out everything was just fine. Scientist have a knack for finding exactly what they are looking for and they are now looking for higher temps.

Ah, I must have misread the slogan. It was Hope for Change.

Insert Sara Palin joke
So NASA now can build a green building but cant deliver a person to the space station. Yay.

Is this slashdot.org or moveon.org? I think if Bush pushed for the government to move to open source, some slashdotters would probably explode.
Wiping my hard drive is a little much for making a typo during the install process. I wonder if people with dyslexia could sue for discrimination?
Ray traced monkeys? No way! Where's the chrome sphere floating over the black and white checkerboard floor?

Amtrak in space? God help us all!
I wonder what his monitor looks like?
