You've got it half right. The government should not support otherwise useless business models. However -- what you failed to consider about your example of a song that can only be played once is -- the free market. The free market should eliminate bad actors *VERY* quickly. But you say we have a lot of bad actors that seem to persist? That's because we don't *really* have a free market. Collusion and government codification give us a semi-free market where those who have the blessing of the government are allowed to make money.
For some reason the same people spouting their "free market" religion are the same people seeking subsidies and advantage. My ultimate point -- is that the real problem isn't DRM but the system that allows it to happen. If there wasn't collusion and anti-competitive behavior, it wouldn't be allowed to exist. We have to attack the root cause, not the symptom.
Let me present a conspiracy theory: IT is one of THE ONLY industries whose back hasn't been broken yet by cheap labor.
Ask yourself, why has the US Government undermined the working middle class at every turn? Because doing so allows the ownership class to recapture the wealth held by those middle classes.
I think that a lot of places are graveyards for older programmers like that. The salary is bad, but the people don't have to worry about being challenged, or staying late, and they slowly, slowly accumulate a little wealth -- and the think you should be on that same track. I had a manager tell me flat out once -- "You're worth more than this but I can't pay you more then a guy whose been here 20 years." In his own fucked up way it was his way of respecting his friend... but the real problem was he needed to pay that guy MORE not me less...
In Corona, CA here we have a company which routinely offers people *LESS* than they are making. currently. I talked to them on the phone and their max was 20k less than I was making, and I wasn't particular well paid at the time. They are amazed that they can't get the people they need.
It is a common misconception that machines only page when they are out of memory. Kernels will page various resources (file handles, etc) even when not out of ram. Also, paging allows the computer to decide what is useful and maximizes available ram by taking advantage of temporal localities in data and code.
The real thing is, the "pirate" content on YouTube is about 98% of the interesting stuff on YT. I mean ok, the shrimp on a treadmill is pretty cool. But what else is there to watch? Making good video content is hard.
:-) Actually, I share your belief... I believe starbucks over-roasts their beans to get a really *STRONG* taste, that sacrifices a lot of the depth and character. But everyone seems to like it, and I admit now and then I do to... so then I think that leads to a whole more epistemological debate about is something really "burned" if thats how everyone likes it? Yea i dont know either:)
Anyways, it was a pleasure having a conversation with someone on slashdot that didn't start or end with swearing or insults.
I have been doing this for the last few months and it has really turned the tide for me, before I really felt like I was loosing the battle against diabetes. The only trick is finding the right *kind* of cinnamon can be difficult. There are hundreds of types of cinnamon and the kind you want is commonly called "cassia" or "cinnamonium aromium" (sp?) or sometimes "cinnamonium romulus" (generally the chinese name). It is grown in indonesia and china. Problem being that most cinnamons sold in the US are blends of Saigon Cinnamon which does not seem to have the same properties. A number of nutrition stores sell cinnamon pills (vitamin shoppe, gnc) that have the correct cinnamon in them. Currently the best price i've found is at GNC -- if you buy their GNC card ($15/year) it knocks a bottle of 200 pills down to about $12. Before you say "thats expensive for cinammon" as yourself -- what are you spending on medication right now? On your glucophage, on your metformin, on your zocor, on your benazepril, on your insulin?
For me the cinnamon does not have the horrible side effects of things like metformin and glucophage. The side effects (sudden intense hunger, increased appetite) make me eat more, gain weight, and thus require more medication. I am not suggesting you replace your medications for cinnamon, but if you are having trouble controlling your blood sugar, try adding cinnamon to your diet. If you are not having trouble, try replacing some of your medication with cinnamon.
I am planning on starting a website soon about this to try and get the word out. How many times in life is there something simple and safe that can improve your health?
Do we know why they think kids *NEED* laptops? It seems very... western... to me to think that kids need laptops? I was a kid once, there was no such thing as laptops at that time, I got along just fine.
I did have working sanitation, an electrical grid, viable farming and transportation infrastructures and there were no wars or genocides going on. Seems like the're going about it a bit backwards.
Myspace will ultimately be worth nothing. Myspace is already past the height of its popularity, its just coasting on momentum which will run out eventually.
Seriously. Informal Poll: Does *ANYONE* here like Burger King?
It seems to me the easiest way to sell more burgers would be to make burgers that didnt taste like crap. But I'm not a marketing exec... so what do I really know?
Exactly. One of my favorite things in the whole world is some bootleg recordings of steely dan recorded in a garage, they're sold on amazon as "founders of steely dan" or "android wherehouse" and a bunch of other names. They are *TERRIBLE*. Complete trash. Point being -- they're my favorite thing because they give me hope for my own endeavours seeing how shitty something can start out, and how pretty it can end up.
There is the spectre of protectionism. It is my belief that it is your right to gamble. However, can we not agree that gambling is generally very harmful?
You're right about the use of the word thou.
It was a major pain in the ass and it *WAS* a big deal :) thanks for fixing it.
I disagree heartily. There has been a bug on OSX for *two years* which makes firefox almost unusable.

2 out of 3! Yes almost everyone was quite old and they did talk about 5% raises, but no saturn talk that I recall :)

Where did you get it? and what color was it?

Thats true. But I think its equally trendy to hate Starbucks...
Because the guy is saying starbucks is crap. I don't know if thats true or not, but I'd like to hear what he considers to be not crap.
Can you suggest then a place to get better coffee than Starbucks?
I have stayed away from chromium because it is believed to be a mutagen.
What is this chrome of which you speak? Do you mean chromium?

I wonder if it varies by region... in southern california *EVERYTHING* they make is just horrid.

wtf are you talking about? :) Steely Dan is dripping with character.
