I am an audophile, my question for you is, how do I make an ogg from a DVD-A or SACD to put on my car player? My CD collection lives under my bed in crates now, I dont want to be tied to media.
My first thought was, "why are we funding this asshole?" UCLA is a public university so this guys salary is being paid by California taxpayers (I worked in UCRs tops research lab for several years -- we pulled in more money than the rest of our college combined).
This is probably just an attempt to get research funding from the MPAA. Research professors are the most disengenous people you can imagine yet they are still completely vital to the advancement of the technology. Remember that, the MPAA paying out the ass for this research and the guy failing and determining its not possible/feasable, is as important as success.
Hehehe yea, ask Stack how they feel about MS's thought theft:) (for those of you who don't remember, stack they made a HD compression program which MS ripped off 100%, drove them out of business, and then eventually lost a lawsuit to). Im sure someone else could mention at least 100 other companies they've done that to.
well, that they killed it specifically as a marketing technique to sell DVDs?
It is possible, and I like the way your conspiratorial mind works. However, they could have sold season 1 DVDs and still made a eason 2.
The inside story is, that FireFly was the "baby" of an ousted executive. If FireFly did well then there would be all sorts of questions along the lines of "Why are were firing guys who are making hit shows?"
The solution was well documented -- tank the show by showing them out of order, not advertising them, and then changing the show times so you couldn't catch them. I remember seeing the adverts on TV and going "that looks COOL!!" and then I couldn't find it.
I know its "technically" illegal to download tv shows. But I have a fairly expensive cable subscription... In my mind im already paying 80$ a month for TV (yeah I know... adelphia). So whats the difference if I download it and watch it, or if I tape it or watch it? The difference is, tapes SUCK. I dont know how they do it, but the stuff on these sites is *far* superior quality to vhs, *EVERYTHING* looks like shit on a 62" HDTV.
I've also realized something, Im 26, and advertising is simply not aimed at me anymore. I'm a relatively savy consumer and I can count the number of things I've bought from a TV commercial in the last 5 years on one hand (mostly new kinds of pizzas from pizza hut:).
I have noticed, that I buy things and *THEN* see them in commericals. They're advertising a game called psychonauts... pre-ordered it months ago. Kingdom Hearts, Castlevania? Bought them before I ever saw the commercials. What im trying to say is not that im some kind of trendsetter, just that I seem to find out about stuff I want other ways than television.
That's -unreal-. There aren't three million people for a 75 mile radius where I live. I can't imagine 3 million -illegals- wandering through. Doesn't that put a massive strain on infrastructure??? How do you guys handle it?
Everyone is in denial because you're labelled a racist by radical mexican rights groups if you basically talk about the reality of the situation. But here we go,
California has a net loss of 10 billion a year (money illegal immigrants cost us minus money they give us and can't retrieve. It massively stresses out public systems, welfare, roads, education, justice and medical systems. The hospital in my town has a 24-48 hour wait for non life threatning emergencies. People from Mexico hop the border anytime they need medical care. I went there once and met a ELDERLY HEART PATIENT who had been waiting *12* hours to be seen. Hospitals are closing all the time, and the ones that cant close -- ream you. If I got in a car accident (with no insurance) since I am white, a hospital would ruin my life trying to collect an outrageous bill from me -- but if a mexican guy who looked illegal did -- they'd let him go scot free. And Here's the funny thing, *I* pay incredibly inflated hospital bills to *fund* the illegal immigrants who couldn't pay.
Education has actually gotten better due to *massive* cash infusions, but keep in mind we have a 14billion deficit each year. When I went to school classes had 50 students in them and often courses had no books, or class copies only.
The estimated cost to jail illegal immigrants in LA COUNTY ALONE is 300m dollars.
It is estimate the *average* Californian pays $1000 a year in taxes to support illegal immigrants.
Ok, so now that we heard the *PROBLEM*, lets talk about why it happens. First of all, Mexico has a huge humanitarian problem, I feel for these people, but the problem is too big for us to fix. Second of all, Mexico encourages illegal immigration, they publish comic books on how to immigrate illegally, Mexicos BIGGEST industry is now illegal immigration. Mexico also teaches its kids in school (the ones who go anyways) that a good portion of the US was stolen from them (we won it in a war fair and square -- and they stole it from the Indians, never hear that fact do you?).
Identity theft is massive here. My SSN is being used to purchase property around Southern California, and the signators are *all* mexican surnames. (too bad I dont actually own the property)
On the flip side we have militant immigrants right activists, funded by: businesses that benifit from illegal immigration (more on that soon). These groups will call anyone a racist who suggests maybe we have a problem. Groups like Mecha basically advocate the "taking back" of california through illegal immigration. Mecha held a protest at UC Riverside when I worked there, they marched on the school to protest that ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS had to pay out of state tuition at the university. So lets get this straight -- You live in this country legally, move to California, and have to pay out of state tuition to go to school here. But you come to the COUNTRY illegally and should't?
Any sector of business that needs low skill, low pay workers is overrun by cheap labor such as: gardening, farming, house painting, janitorial and construction, day labor, etc. These firms make *HUGE* money by paying substandard wages to what are basically slaves. A common rallying cry is if there weren't illegal immigrants, the prices of things such as produce would skyrocket. However studies have shown the price of lettuce for instance, would rise 10 cents with legal labor.
The last part of the puzzle is George Bush, who won't do shit to help California, partly because he has a grudge against us because we never vote for him. He *tries* to hurt us everytime he can. Everytime theres a military base closing, its here. He didnt intervene in the electrical crisis of 2001 (which is largely what bankrupted us) even though he had the power
The dollar his been in a freefall. A lot of reasons behind the Iraq war had to do with actually stabilizing our currency and warning other countries who would trade oil in the euro.
Currently countries like China are proping up our currency by purchasing tons of dollars (for more then they need, and ultimately unsustainable). As long as the worlds oil transactions are conducted in dollars people will *have* to buy dollars to buy oil, and the Dollar stays artificially high. I saw artificially because otherwise we are an investment *DOG*. 7 or 8 trillion in debt? every country in the world almost wants to see us unseated, we're loosing a war, vulnerable to attack as our military is already overextended. Price of oil is going to cause stagflation, and our economy while doing better is still dogging it in a lot of ways. It doesn't look good here.
I have the emperor's new mind, Ive never been able to get through it all, because its complete bullshit. It's been 10 years, but from what I remember, Penrose tries to integrate his personal beliefs and personal metaphysics into theories into a physics/epistemology/AI. And he draws wild conclusions from stupid stuff. He'll throw a couple integrals on the page and claim he's proved something about human nature or the nature of the universe.
It was basically a ploy to get mexicans to appeal to the mexican community. But it was a miscalculation... I was a horrible policy... It did get a lot of mexicanss on their side -- but guess what -- they can't vote anyways. And most importantly, it pissed off the legal residents who are *SICK* of the quality of life problems here caused by illegal immigration. (You probably aren't aware but a minor revolt is starting to form in California over this issue -- California, Texas and Arizona can't handle Mexico's humanitarian problems. Its estimated that *3* million illegal immigrants came *LAST YEAR* alone).
Double agreed. The 1.x versions of OO use Blackdown IIRC? *BLACKDOWN SUCKS*. Yes its good to have an open source java platform. Is it good that its an order og magnitude slower than Suns java? *NO*. Open Office 1 was soo slow it was *unusable* on my athlon 1700 w/ 512mb. The OO 2 beta is downright *speedy* on the same system.
End of story. Would it be nice if it was based on an open source stuff? Yes. Is the open source stuff up to par in this case? no.

"WHY THE HELL ARE YOU GOING INTO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, WE DON'T HIRE THOSE KIND OF PEOPLE HERE!!!!"
Wish I'd heard that when I started college:)
Something else we're not talking about here is cultural differences amongst programmers. I dont know many Indian folk, but I've dealt with *A LOT* of chinese programmers, and they are very single minded and narrowly educated.
Most programmers will have 1 or 2 strong languages and APIs, and dabble in a few other languages and platforms. All the Chinese programmers I've ever met, know *1* language. They know it like nobodys business, but the only know that langauge, same with their Math skills, they know linear algebra *VERY* well. They don't know databases, they don't know html, they don't know matlab, basic, php, python, perl, anything. Just their one langauge (usually C/C++). Now when you need a C++ coder these are the guys to go to, but when you need an *ENGINEER* stay the hell away.
Sony should be encouraging "home brew" apps for the PSP as much as possible. I believe that much of the early success of the Palm Pilot was due to the community of developers that flocked to the device.
It was:) I had the "pilot 1000" moments after it was released and there weren't many applications. The Pilot had 128k of ram, of which less than 100k were avaliable to the user. I would decide each morning *what* application i wanted that day -- there was only room for the one. Nevertheless some of them were quite useful.
Something like that happened to a friend of mine... she tried to commit suicide over some VERY bad stuff that was happening to her. They diagnosed her as a depressed (duh!) when she was 16 (you would be depressed to if you were being raped on a regular basis) and gave her heavy meds which *made* her bipolar.
When will drs stop putting developing brains on meds? I dunno.

Sorry, i just got out of a 6 year coma, im still listening to tool, wearing "grunge" and thinking its 1999 :)
if you wanna play it like that, the US invented almost every major technology this century ...
Hehehe yea, ask Stack how they feel about MS's thought theft :) (for those of you who don't remember, stack they made a HD compression program which MS ripped off 100%, drove them out of business, and then eventually lost a lawsuit to). I wish I could. They *ADVERTISE* it in my area but when you call them they say its not avaliable :) Same with their HDTV package. Good advice thou!
Truth be told, im thinking of ditching the TV altogether. I've noticed all my successfull friends dont have TVs...
I've also realized something, Im 26, and advertising is simply not aimed at me anymore. I'm a relatively savy consumer and I can count the number of things I've bought from a TV commercial in the last 5 years on one hand (mostly new kinds of pizzas from pizza hut:).

Yea but core dump sounds cool, and its a great thing to say when you have to goto the bathroom :)
Whatever is stable in gentoo...

My mistake, I would have swore Ive seen Gentoo compiling blackdown.
Im basing my speed estimation on my personal usage of Eclipse and Open Office, both of which *dog* your JVM.
Penrose is the Rush Limbaugh of Physics.
OO 1.x will only *COMPILE* on Blackdown.

Thats funny, for me the article started out with "The attempt to contact drunkenblog.com timed out"
No it was our last jackass governator "Gray Davis". But somebody undid it, I don't recall who ;)
Im from california, and we're DROWNING in illegal immigrants, everyone here thinks the bill is a great thing.
Symantec has been hitting the press very hard, this is just the latest in their ongoing attempt to convince us they dont suck.

I think theres actually a Win32s call that does that. Hope the program isn't expensive :)
