I love LiteStep and use it all the time. Recently development has been slowed by hack attempts against the largest LS sites, but no worries: LS is already far more stable that the standard Windows GUI. I LOVE IT in short :)

    Desktopian

  5. Re:What about the drunks? on Berlin's Robotic Pub · · Score: 1

The German drinking age is 16.

IMHO, the reason that Europeans have lower drinking ages and fewer drinking problems is because :
    a. America = founded by Puritans... the Puritanical attitude still prevails.
    b. Americans started actually producing wine in large quantities for sale in the mid 1900's (correct me if i'm wrong)... in Europe, wine, beer, and spirit-making has been a part of the culture for millenia.
    c. AFAIK, the prevailing attitude among European parents and schools is to be very open about subjects that would be taboo in the US. I was watching French news the other day and I saw French teenagers discussing AIDS with their teacher, and mentioning oral sex in graphic terms. This would be very rare in the US. In the US, parents and teachers are more likely to try and hide things from kids, rather than bring them out in the open.
    d. In Europe, as previous posters have mentioned, it's accepted for young kids to drink (sometimes watered-down) beer or wine with dinner. Since kids need to find out about alcohol by experience, and the US kids don't get the experience at home, they have to experiment to find out how much is too much. Not a recipe for success ;)

  6. Re:Console on Product Placement in Video Games · · Score: 1

With a game like THPS or Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, product placement adds significantly to the realism of the game. It adds just as much as the big-name skaters or bikers add to the realism. To me at least, THPS or Mirra seem much more realistic than games such as SSX Tricky because of the fact that you can play as Hawk, Koston, Burnquist, etc. rather than made-up characters, and use name-brand equipment rather than no-name equipment.
Additionally, since most skaters, etc. are sponsored by equipment companies, I'm sure these companies may have told Neversoft (for example) that they wanted placement since their sponsorees were in the game.

i think if a chip manufacturer is going to not only make it possible to use multiple types of RAM, but also endorse that (i.e. Intel's switched stance on non-RDRAM mobos) it's only fair to use whatever type of RAM you want to test the processor.

  10. Re:Aiee. on Nick Cancelling Invader Zim · · Score: 1

Just to clear up a misconception, Nielsen ratings (the most widely used ones) are derived from so-called "Nielsen families" who get paid by Nielsen to have a box installed in their house which records which shows they watch and relays that information to Nielsen, which publishes it and often relays it to the networks. These Nielsen families only make up a small percentage of all TV viewers, but the statistics of the families are extrapolated to the entire viewing audience.
What's more, Nielsen only recently started giving out ratings for cable networks (because these ratings are so much lower than CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC ratings). So don't feel too bad... unless you are in fact part of a Nielsen family, in which case shame on you.

Although I wish I could be watching a Red Dwarf marathon I'll probably be watching either "The Prisoner" series from my box set or MTV2's "Beats per Minute" marathon with Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Crystal Method, Grandmaster Flash, and Sasha and Digweed. I don't know if there are any other Slashdotters into techno, but if you are, and you're in the US with MTV2, check it out.
