Working as a DNS Admin for a webhosting company often brings forth problems with client domain names. I've had to deal with everything that you can imagine through them. The best way is to call them. If it's something simple, they'll often accept it instantly right there. If it's something more complex they'll often give you a tracking number and you just fax them proof of yourself and that you own the domain name, and within 24 hours most changes go through. At the first sign of trouble through web/email call them.

I'm a highschool student, and because of that law I'd probably be sitting in jail..

More than one have I had to break school district policy to make our computers even WORK. One time in AP Computer Science none of the compilers would work. So I generated a fix for them and even gave it to the admin who was SUPER pissed at me. Ended up that they used it at our other highschool because it wasnt working there. He talked to the principal about me "disrupting network operations". Luckly the principal knows me and didn't pursue it further. That would be a Level 4 violation, 5 days suspension..no questions asked.

Another time I used putty to login to my web server during homeroom (we werent doing anything) to both a) restart apache b) download a report for my next hour class. My advisor (total bitch) didn't understand anything I was doing and when she saw the black box popup she thought i was "hacking the grade server" and basically told me to get off before she reports me. I ignored her and again, I was reported. Luckly 5 minutes worth of explination to the principal got me out of it. This law would suck in the hands of people who dont know what they are doing. If my principal didnt trust me I'd probably be expelled by now, and that's breaking policy to HELP the school..damn lawmakers.

    Speaking of the internet:

Based on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's expedited subpoena provision, RIAA sends out information subpoenas as part of an effort to crack and shut down repeat offenders and deter those hiding behind the perceived anonymity of the Internet. Information subpoenas require the Internet Service Provider (ISP) providing access to, or hosting, a particular site to provide contact information for the site operator. Once the site operator is identified, the RIAA will take steps to prevent repeat infringement; such steps range from a warning e-mail to litigation against the site operator.

IANAL but where the hell does the RIAA think that they have a fucking god given right to subpoena people? last time I checked that was the job of the united states legal system.

"The nature of open source is that you can get a copy of the source code and look at it, make changes to it, etc. Whatever distribution you choose, you can get a copy of that exact source code. Because of this open nature, developers can much more easily identify security weaknesses and prey upon them with viruses and by hacking into systems."

I don't know about you but I don't know of too many "developers" who "identify security weaknesses and prey upon them". Also lets compare the number of virus's in Linux to the number in Windows. Now how many of those Linux virii wouldn't have spread if idiot admins didn't run unknown binaries as root? I'm thinking a ratio of linux virii to windows virii is about 1:100,000.

"Recent examples of the security problems with Linux were discussed in the media. According to a January 17, 2001 CNET News.com article entitled "Internet Worm Squirms into Linux Servers", the Ramen worm has been squirming into Linux servers worldwide. The article discusses how lax security is to blame for the problem and how the worm exploits many of the well-known flaws of the Linux operating system based on a default installation of Red Hat's 6.2 and 7.0 distributions of the software."

Nice definition of "recent". How about Microsoft security in the news..any IIS security problems recently? We had a bug in our software, big fricken deal. Again, ratio of linux security problems to microsoft is about 1:100,000.

I really wish Microsoft would suck it up and stop trying to make their products look better by putting down Linux.

We had a case here where a kid brought a gun to school, along with $1500 worth of fake heroin, this was a middle school. He was given a 5-day suspension and that was it. Another kid wrote a list of names out like: "people I don't like" and they interpreted it as "people who I wish to kill in a blood bath". People over react with the smallest things but then when big things happen they want to keep them out of the news. It makes them look like they're doing their jobs, "protecting our kids".

He's only got 1 more year to go then he's off to college where it will be different for him. High school is hell, everyone knows it (well, most geeks) where social popularity rules instead of academic achievement. But I figure, once I'm out the chance that the football star, fake 4.0 (no honors classes, easiest load known to man, parents are "teachers") will become anything useful are slim to none. We'll see what these people become in the future. I know at my 10-year reunion I'm going to have a nice little laugh.
