So we got fast routers and nice pipes for the people who can afford them. The end user (us) is probably NEVER going to see the speed increase as most of us are on dial-up. Instead of making new routers and new laser technologies for people who can afford them come up with a new low priced connection for the end user that will allow him to take advantage of the already abundant bandwidth.
Cable's nice, DSL is too (where it's available) but with people like UUNET installing oc-192's I think we need a new home internet connection that will allow us to get much better speeds.
now im gonna be getting emails like this: o"ur web server will be down tomorrow to replace the potato's. we will be installing potato's from idaho which should last us another week"
Oh come on guys..stop complaining! Slashdot is trying to do a good thing by selling a book and raising money to help people. I'm sure that 99% of you couldn't pick your specific comment out of the book. This was a tragic event and we must document all sides to make sure it doesnt happen again. Lost of innocent people lost their lives and lots of you had good stuff to say about our society and what's wrong with it. These are good and should be published even if you dont get credit. So stop your bitching
Is the judge a retard? They just ruled that an ISP is not liable for what passes through their networks and now they do this?. Our legal system is seriously fscked up.
I must apologize for referring to Mr. Malda as "Captain Taco" in previous statements. I received over a dozen letters from Slash-dotters like yourselves informing me of my mistake, which brings me to this point: I encourage you to let me know your opinions (and correct me if I misspeak).
Funny..i always thought his name was "Commander Taco"
Um..Since the internet is a huge network if someone monitors 1 part of it arent they monitoring the whole thing? So now russia will be monitoring the whole world. Since traffic usually takes the wierdist routes some has to go through russia. Does the law say anything about monitoring just russia's citizen's traffic or ANY traffic that passes through russia?
(they couldnt inforce it but the day russia and the US trade secrets on eachother's citizens I'm screwed:)
Is this a real press release? Last time i checked IT WAS A PLEASURE TO DO BUSINESS WITH ONE OF THE BIGGEST E-COMMERCE GIANTS IN THE WORLD: F*U*C*K*I*N*G* INTENSE & REALLY EXPENSIVE BUT A KICK FOR ALL OF US! WE ALL LEARNED A LOT. was not common in an offical press release.
This doesnt make sense. Why arent they breaking down the doors of xing for not encrypting their key? This guy did nothing wrong besides piss off the wrong company (group?). MPAA should stop crying cause some "31337 h4xx0r" cracked their weak encryption in the first place. It's time that they finally recgonize linux. What do they think they are gonna find on his machines anyway? Just like big brother(tm) to break down the door and take all of your stuff cause you did something that they dont like.
I am a 16 year old DJ from brookfield, WI and I LOVE this idea! For a long time I have looked into internet broadcasting but I couldnt afford the bandwidth. Now for a 1 time fee of 1g for the equipment..i mean..thats not bad.
Like I said.. our webpage isn't complete. We decided that making the control pannel and getting the server ready is more important than the webpage. Would you rather have us spend all of our time on a good high quality webpage and let the server slide or work on customer service and maintain the server?...i'll tell my boss to get off his lazy @$$ and finish the page though:)
*ad* I just had to jump in here. I work for a hosting company (bytehosting.com). We have a dedicated server located at digitaNation, the best dedicated server host we could find. They offer 4 physically seperate dns servers for us to use besides our own. They email us the exact SECOND that ftp/dns/www/telnet/ssh/mail goes down. They have physically seperate connections coming into the building. Its a pretty inpressive setup. Anyway...
We offer small packages for little websites (10 megs of space, 500 megs of bandwidth: $6.00), another one for bigger sites (50 megs of space, 1.5 gigs of bandwidth: $13.50). One for medium large sites (75 megs, 2.5 gigs of bandwidth, $19.95) and one for large sites (250 megs of space, 4 gigs of bandwidth: $26.50)
We offer, anonymous ftp apache 1.3.6 web admin cgi-bin (w/ perl) online web stats mailing lists java chat rooms preinstalled cgi scripts subdomains (varies by account) php3 frontpage (coming soon, still evaluating security) ASP (coming soon)
All accounts are hosted on a 400mhz machine with 128 megs of ram running rh6.1 and a dedicated 10mbps switched connection to digitalNation's backbone. We will NEVER have more than 50-60 accounts on a box. At that time (or when we deem nessicary, ie: large site moves in and is extremely processor hungry) we will be purchasing another machine so that they dont get over loaded. If there is expressed intrest we might add a NT machine later this year.
Any perl modules you want installed will be installed and our admins are down to earth guys who know you may not fit any one of these plans. We'll work with you to create the best possible web hosting plan.
In short. We are a great hosting company. My web design company (who is hosted there) has been between several hosts before. This services offers us all we need.
if you want a detailed pricing plan you can go to: http://www.bytehosting.com/plans_vhost.htm i know our website isnt up yet but we have been busy building our control pannel and getting the machine ready.
give us a try: http://www.bytehosting.com

p.s. stay FAR FAR FAR away from WHHQ (http://www.whhq.net)..we were gonna switch there but after 4 months of waiting for them to setup our account we cancled payment and found another host. Using their poorly written control pannel i was able to get a list of accounts. ~10000 domains on 1 machine..and its slower than can be
The suggestion that no two operating systems are to be exactly alike is also an interesting one, but hardly practical. First of all, most security holes occur in applications, not operating systems per se
*AHEM* Windows?:)
Maybe not in the *nix (or bsd:) world but look at who is most likely to get a virus/trojan. People on windows (most likely using AOL).
Check out industrial shops. They have 100% sealed cases for use down on the factory floor's and are EXTREMELY sturdy and secure. If i wasn't at school right now i would look them up for you..but back on to AP Computer Science
Bill gates barely can program. They bought ms-dos from someone else and just marketed it. I'd be suprised if billy boy has even programmed in the last 10 years.
When I first read this I didnt really care. But I read it again and realized that someone was smokin' some bad weed or something. How the hell did this government get elected? There has to be some australians willing to stand up for what they believe in and get this government taken down (legally). The have no reguard for what the people want. Yes..the net can be a bad place. If you know where to look. I find that I seldomly "trip over" pr0n or hate sites. 99% of the time if you just look at the domain you are being sent to you can tell if its a porn site or not. Besides...NO filter can get 100%. I dont care if you have a list of good sites there will ALWAYS be a way around it. There is still email with fly by night sites. There are still sites like www.noproxy.com which allow you to bypass it. There are still perl scripts written allowing you to do a noproxy.com on any server you want. This isnt about protecting our kids. It's that parents now adays are just too damn lazy to spend time with their kids and teach them right from wrong. I myself im a 16 year old kid (young adult:) and i feel that parents now adays are just too busy thinking about making money and working than having fun and spending quality time with their kids. I know my parents are just too damn tired to spend any time with us after working long days. The burdon of all of this is on the parents. Frankly my parents dont care what i do on the net. Not cause they are bad people its just that they know i will make good decisions.

you gotta ask yourself here...is this such a bad thing? :)
if the links are quality...sure..why the hell not

Though is is quite good news I must say u probably should visit the link before posting. If you did you would see:
Tokyo, Japan, November 25, 1999
M$ Sues Slashdot / Can Of Whoop Ass Opened / Slashdot Crushes Them
So will this move make my downloading from warez.slashdot.org faster?

sean_k sent me new code that i never got around to posting. So i finally posted it. Check back to get it.

The freaked out DJ-Pyro watching his server suffer the effects of a good sunday afternoon slashdotting.
Instead of just talking about this here why not go to their website and tell them we want it removed:

Be nice otherwise they won't take us seriously
