    I find it perticulary funny that executives want to smack the ones resonsible for random features. From what i have read and understand the executives is the ones who constantly have demanded more features and not security.

    Im sure the staff at Redmond is eagerly awaiting the executives bitchslapping eachother and themselves to the next monday. Im sure most of the marketing department will call in sick.

    But really, Windows is filled with pure userland tools all over. You would have thunk at leastsome of the new ones would be made in .net, like on linux perhaps?

    Funny that, that Linux use more .net than Microsoft itself.

    So basically you are saying that even if i have made a number of Microsoft courses i still suck at Windows admin? In essense that tells me that Linux is in fact much easier to admin since ive done it without a minute of training whatsoever and still get a very good result.

    So, Microsoft education suck bigtime and Linux is very easy to administer. Thats what i was fishing for :d

    Its easy if you dont know any other. I administer both Linux and Windows in a mixed enviroment and still finds myself sitting infront of the broken glass most of the time. If windows is simple to administer then why does it takes up so much of my time?

    Applation avaliability isnt really a problem today except if you run a backend designed for Windows.

    I fail to understand why anyone even lets an MS rep near a Linux event in any way or form. I much rather see the benefits of Linux than listen to two three year olds bickering about who has the bigger bucket. Especially if im at a Linux convent. If and when Microsoft releases something other than their migration products like Unix Services for Windows i cant find any reason for them to be at such a convent other than to spread FUD. They arent selling or supportin anything Linux at all today.

    Pretty good? Have you really administrated XP anytime in a larger enviroment? Its a big ugly PITA and demands crazy amounts of work to stay awake. Easy to use is the last thing i would accuse it of. I battle furious users all day long thats as lost now as they was the first time XP came out.

    OTOH they really seem to like the new Linux Terminal Server installation. Why? It just damn works and arent in any way harder to use than Windows.

    I have experience from both paid support and free support for OSS software. In general OSS comes out as the top dog in every consideration for me. Firstly all info is public while many companies bury it to make an incentive to buy their support. Having access to bug databases is also invaluable since you can pretty quickly find out a bug instead of having to wait for the vendor to get enogh complaints to feel obliged to conceed to really having a bug.

    If novell ships its Novell Client for Linux to all major distributions there are infact an incentive to use Suse Open Enterprise even in Linux only shops. It also makes OES an excellent gathering point for various desktop versions. Companies will always be off sync on some desktops and having server software that handles this in an easy way is worth much IRL.

    If on the other hand Novell tries to tie SLED against OES they make a big enormous mistake. Even if SLED is nice i will not use it if its the only choice. Why would i want to lock myself in again coming from another lockin? Before i go SLED i want to see Novell supporting other client dists than SLED.

    So basically its not how good product Novell ships but more about how good they interact with the rest of the Linux ecosystem that will doom or raise them to the sky.

    I dont mind waiting a bit more if it means a more stable experience. Users should not have to tend to bugs and such issues at all. A better more polished experience means less drive to test the next distro. If its good and easy to use you dont have that voice in your head urging you to upgrade all the time.

    I really hope Linspire get their CNR for Ubuntu thing up and running. Having an easy way of buying apps and installing them would make for eg. gaming on Linux much easier and give a boost for commercial games on Linux.

    Laptops arent the only electronic device that benefits from small fuel-cells. I can think of many other uses for those other than laptops. I also assume here that the efficency of fuel cells will improve over time. The first ones will probably not be optimal. Ofcourse you can solve it with bigger batteries but wight seems to be important. The big breakthrough is more energy stored in a smaller space.

    This is something long since needed in electric cars.

    Today most laptops are just dragged between electric outlets since they wont go for more than a couple of hours without recharging. Having nine hours worth of computer time changes the way you can use a laptop in a pretty significant way. From being used as a portable desktop you can use it as a really portable computer, taking it whereever you go without running amok for a piglets nose.

    For me this is something i have longed for since the dawn of laptops.

    Because they can be subject to legal action at any time if they include support for mp3, wma and whatnot. A hobby distro maker might take the chance but RedHat management would be liable for suits from its shareholders if they do something illegal on purpouse.

    Software patens suck but until they are gone we have to live with them. CNR makes that pretty easy for the end user.

    There are som things open source just cant supply legally. MP3, WMA, and some other media formats are amongst those. To be able to get those from CNR would be wonderful. CNR can license those things in another way than an open source dist can. It would be a nice complement and make it easier for the users.

    A normal Linux distro has tools easily at hand a Windows user can only dream about. Not to mention how happy people would be if they actually could use their new computer instead of babysitting it against viruses, worms and spyware. Obviously there are a demand for Linux computers and the its pretty strange none of the bigger players tap this market. Sooner or later a new player will emerge that will capture that market.

    I have 400 users that really dont seem to have any problems using Linux at all. Im a 100% linux admin, not that good but i manage very well. The thing is, not that many users i know tends their own computers. Using linux is simple, its managing it thats pretty much as hard for your normal user as with Windows. Its not harder by any measurment. I install Windows XP and Linux machines all day long and i find XP much harder to manage than Linux even considering i have extensive training in Windows.

    Whats hard with Linux for the Windows freak is that its different. In reality when working with both Linux gets the upper hand real quick.

    An OEM Linux computer with MP3 support, DivX, WMA and such is by no means ever hard to use. The same goes for an Office computer installed by the local admin.

    I switched 400 users literally over the day and none of them have had any problems adjusting to Linux, this without a minute of training.

    In the exact same way iran is forbidden to aqquire them. There are a bunch of resolutions in the UN still unfullfilled. Some of them wasnt even vetoed by the US so they are valid but not enforced.

    As i recall every official and unofficial statement i have ever heard they arent even trying to get nuclears. Their nuclear programme is about as successful as Iraqs WMD programme. Where did all those WMD go that was so abundant but not found by the single biggest search party in the world?

    If they wanted to start a war it would be raging this very minute. They may want Israels current administration gone and a better one in place but they arent stupid. Attacking Israel would mean total annihilation.

    Iran hasnt had any nuclears and arent about to aquire some either. They have never programmed them to pont at Israel since thet dont own any in reality, nor in fantasy.

    Israel still makes terrible mistakes. If its stupidity or just pure evil i will live unsaid. Current pressure on the democratically choosen administration in Palestine is only going to bring more violence than before. Withholding money so that police and security forces can get paid and in the same time demanding that Palestine should keep every insane little terrorist cell at bay is so utterly stupid. The change of Hamas into a political force would be the best thing that could ever happen for peace. But do Israel administration really want peace? It sure dont seem like it.

    Well that would be a good start. The problem is only small parts of the occupied territories have been returned. Giving the most useless bits back and keeping all the good stuff isnt what i would call to separate from the occupation. Until Israel changes and starts to want peace the war will go on. This isnt about winning any more, its about how to start living.

    The issue is not in any way about wich country the US likes the most. There are a room full of resolutions regarding Israels nuclears that have not been dealt with. Fix them and then go after Iran (that hasnt got any at all). This is the sole reason half the world hate the US.

    Wich countries have used nukes?
    Wich country has been using amunition containing radioactive material?

    If you think the current iranian government is occupied with crazy muslim terrorist farmers you have watched one to many Fox News. Iran is a very calm and educated country with a pretty decent democracy in place. The people are mostly happy with their current administration. The reason so many fleed from Iran was the US sanctioned war with Iraq (the one where they helped saddam get into place as the dictator of Iraq).

    I gladly trust Iran with nuclear weapons but the thing is, they havent got a remote capability of making any nuclears. Also they are a souverign country and no other country can tell them what to do. Thats why they think its their own matter that they want to start a nuclear power plant (i point out here, nuclear plants dont do that good in ballistics tests).

    Iran is nothing like Iraq in any way. Its a calm friendly place with happy inhabitants. Politics has improced tremendously in recent years and to go in there and drag it down into the state that Iraq is would be a misdeed to the whole world and a new much bigger breeding ground for terrorists. If you think the Iraq people are mad, imagine how mad a placent people will be when they are wiped out by an invading country without any reason at all.

    I suspect that many nerds is also pretty well informed as to politics. I love to talk politics with people who are informed and can underline their views. Mostly those people are scholars or nerds and other people interested in reading books and learning stuff. Worst kind is the ones who gets all their facts from the TV.

    What the US needs is to act with caution and responsability and be a good world citizen. Stop using torture and avoid collateral damage in foreign countries. Demand the same things from both friends and foes (like, why let Israel have illegal nuclear weapons but bash Iran wich has none nor the ability to develop them).

    et rid of the need to alter the reality and the problem is solved.

    Linux is more than ready for any use whatsoever. It can do anything Windows can and then some.

    About DRM, have you really grasped the difference between XP's activation system and a real hard wired DRM solution? The thing is that parts of the OS lies encrypted and with the new DRM supporting CPU's you cant get to it. This DRM is noting like software copy protection that can be hacked in a heartbeat.

    I suspect a rather large bunch of unsuspecting users will hit a pretty hard wall once they realize they cant just d/l and use whatever software they like. With DRM pirating is pretty hard, compared to today it will be insanely hard to pirate an application that puts antipiracy rootkits in a DRM partition. For 98% of all the home users i know this will be an enormous reason not to get Vista.

    The upside is that cheaper/free applications will have a blast. Once people mostly uses free software the step onto some other system is so much smaller. Either that or a whole bunch of software companies will have to lower their prices to a much lower price.

    Even if this book is old i found it be disturbing because so much of it could apply today. The war on terrorism is the exact same beast as the constant war between Oceania, Eurasia and EastAsia in the book. A never ending "war" that put all normal laws aside. War is peace, indeed. Reading the book should put the wheels in motion on most people. Its hard to go through it and not be touched by how much is applicable today. I almost got the feal that the Neocons favourite book must be 1984 and they are striving in that direction. The reasoning behind Guantanamo Bay is real live truespeak. Bend the truth again and again and soon enough you have built your own. "Illegal combatants"? To throw people into jail as long as they are a "threat" in a war that according to Bush can span decades? Without any trial? Im sickened by the european countries that also is going in this direction. Terrorism kills a millionth of a percent of people killed by smoking and still we think the right to smoke is much more important than privacy, free speech and the right to a fair trial? Its truly sickening.

    The thing i find so disturbing is that normal people seems so willing to give up what their forefathers gave their lives for. Talk about pissing on their graves. The government cant do theese things without the willing consent of its population. I dont think for a second that its because people are stupid that they just watch.
