I'd second this post. We use it worldwide and have found it to be a GREAT collaboration and IM solution. It also includes logging capabilities if you have SOX requirements.

Leave them on, and just "miss" by a little bit and you solve a lot of problems.

  3. Suppression DB is standard practice in marketting on Pentagon Creating A Database Of Students · · Score: 1

Anyone that has a widespread marketting audience imports lists every other week. So a suppression list is required given that if I "delete" you today instead of move you to a suppresion list and I import you tomorrow because I bought a new list from marketting agency "We Sell Stuff". Then I'm not respecting your "Do Not Mail" request. This "keep a seperate list" is what every marketting DB manager worth his salt will do to avoid complaints.

So take off your tinfoil hats and move along.

  4. Hold Shift? on Sony's New Nagging Copy Protection · · Score: 2, Insightful

If this is DRM based for music CDs then I'm guessing ... guessing mind you. That it's auto-run based. So disabling auto-run, or holding shift when the disc is inserted will fix it right up. Same reason Macs are unfettered, auo-run Windows code isn't exactly going to affect them now is it?

  5. Re:Why sue Yahoo and not the ex-boyfriend? on Oregon Woman Sues Yahoo for $3 Million · · Score: 1

There is no proof the boyfriend posted the pics as of yet. There is proof Yahoo hosted the pics and information and neglected to remove them. Perhaps through this court case proof of the poster (BF) will be drudged up and he can be targetted. But wihtout cooperation from Yahoo, forced by a civil trial in this case, that proof would never surface.

  6. Re:Server batteries on Mac mini Sans Wires - Batteries Inside the Case · · Score: 1

Most UPS systems have more than enough monitoring and alert capability without adding another component to the actual server. Because if the external UPS is down, then so is the networking equipment that you'd use to send that email or remote in with, the KVM/monitor to do anything about it locally would be awfully lacking in power as well. So basically you've just added 10 minutes to pray the power comes up instead of shutting down the system when the external UPS told you to already.

Find a patron Organization that has the donors already in place and the willingness to spend the money to acquire the software. You are talking about a client base where the buildings rtun hundreds of millions, the money is already out there. There is a project much like this (closed source) called Tessitura that you might look into for ideas/inspiration. But as another poster pointed out... without a good solid business plan you can't expect venture capital to just come pouring in.

  12. Top down change on China's Superior Technologies · · Score: 1

Yet another societal difference that drives a ot of these "innovatins" is top down government central control. The Chinese have the ability to say "You will!". Where in the US there is a lot more "Will you?". (political rhetoric aside) This allows for a much less decentralized and chaotic implementation of a lot of initiatives.. like cell phones. Who owns thier network? Gov't. Who controls all the phones? Gov't Who says you can't call the anti-party groups? Gov't. Socialistic values do some things very well in this manner... and yet they can't breathe and drink the water because of the same system.

It's attiitudes like this that lead to lax security. Admins who assume _their_ systems are safe because of their obscure/complex/godlike admin/open source/etc. status are just asking for it. Why do you think IIS is so vulnerable? Because admins think they don't need to worry about it. Don't lump yourself in with this crowd, it's a bad thing.
