Here are a few answers that may clear things up for you.
First off, there *IS* a relationship between Panasonic and Nintendo. So to the guy that said Nintendo wouldn't be happy about it, you're wrong. They're very happy about it. Afterall, Panasonic makes the drives the NGC uses. (I think Panasonic also has a hand in the proprietary DVD-like format the cute little 3" discs use!)
Secondly, all things point to the 'Q' *NOT* coming to North America. Single biggest reason. Piracy. I doubt anyone can (at this moment) get there hands on DVD-like 3" media!:) Well, I take that back. You probably can, it would just cost more than the actual games right now anyways. Later on in the future? I'm sure someone will come up with something. But unlike the PS2 and XBOX, piracy isn't gonna happen on the NGC any time soon. Nintendo has *ALWAYS* tried to keep piracy to a minimum with their proprietary formats. This is a good thing by the way. It keeps the software developers happy. Which means they'll make games for Nintendo. Which means people like me will be happy!:)
Finally, to the dude contemplating what to get. I personally have a PS2 and picked up my NGC at launch. I don't think this is true for the rest of the/. crowd, but I like playing games with my friends. Super Monkey Ball and Super Smash Bros. has provided more than their money's worth already. That said, I can't wait til Mario Cart comes out!:) And I pray there'll be a version of Mario Party for it too. As 'kiddy' as these games may be, they definately do the job. It gives us great fun! And that's why I bought it right? So to answer, if you already have a DVD player (I did, in the PS2) then I would recommend a NGC if you have friends. If you do have friends and don't have a DVD player, than your decision is a little tougher. If you don't have friends at all then it doesn't matter what you get, does it? You'll be playing alone.:)
Why is every freakin' person so angry/bitter. We all knew this was coming. They said so when they first gave it to us!!!
A few things.
1) It's optional. I will continue to use the free service, albeit slower. I'm sure their are companies that will subsribe. It's not that much if you're managing a bunch of machines. (Which I'm pretty positive is the target for this)
2) If you don't like it, well.. too bad!:) Just don't use it. They're not FORCING you to do anything. It's your choice. Yeah.. choice. Something another company doesn't give you most of the time.
3) They're still gracious enough to offer the same thing for free for us! And yes, you CAN still get the RPMs elseware. But why? It's a nice ilttle packaged GUI that says 'hey! you need to update this' I'm all for it!
4) The bonus is that this money will go towards Evolution too! There are a few people at work that use it (I'm a PINE dude myself) and it looks really really sweet. If I ever require calendering stuff to book meetings.. I know what I'll be turning to.
5) People.. relax.. it's not a bad thing. It was to be expected. Simple as that.
I was a pretty hard core gamer before this thing called work creeped up!:)
Anyway, are there really any hard core gamers out there that would be playing on a laptop?! I know I wouldn't. I know someone who currently only owns a laptop and he plays his Counter-Strike at work.
If I owned a laptop, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be doing my gaming on it. I would want a laptop for doing work while on the road. Besides, I'd want the extra battery life from using a non-too-powerful GPU over the 3D capabilities any day!
Actually you CAN get cars without the stereo and they WILL deduct it's value if you really wanted. (My ex did this) You're then free to put in whatever you want and use the money you saved towards a better product. Go ahead and go to a car dealer and try it! They may give you some BS for a while, but if you persist you can. (DISLAIMER: Some dealers are easier to deal with others)
What WindowsXP is doing is charging for all theses things without the option to NOT buy them. Meaning that to upgrade there are additional costs on top of the cost of Windows. (Notice the difference between the the Car example and the Windows example!? HINT: In the car example you CAN get money back for your stereo. In the Windows example, you CAN'T!)
What this means is users are MUCH less likely to upgrade to third party products because they were already forced to pay for a simular product. There will always be the exceptions of the really hardcore users who WILL take that hit and upgrade some of their components anyways.

I think EVERY release of any software should come with a song!:)
What ever happened to the days where there's a link to a supposed "free" download, and you go there and there's a link that links to the file. What's up with this registering and asking me about the size of my mother's army boots just so I can get SO5.2 BETA!!! I didn't download it because I'm getting seriously ticked off with the registration crap just to download something I might not even use! I'm going back to vi and LaTeX.:P
OK, I'm getting really sick of this. If he registered coke.ch and has a legitimate site about coke (coccaine) addiction, then I don't understand why coca-cola is so peeved. Does he not have a right to have a site up about Coccaine addiction? If he had a site about cola beverages in general, then maybe, but still, I hate this whole trademark infringement crap.
What's wrong with coca-cola limited anyways! It's obvious they're not exploiting the coke branding in any way.
Sheesh!
Anyone wanna start a new Internet with me where it really is free and anyone can do anything they want!:)
Alright, I had to clear my name!:) At the time of writing my original post, the news release from Mandrake outlining the features wasn't out yet. I just finished reading the news release including the features and I now see the USB configuration utility thingy! Woohoo! I definately will try it when I get home.
Really!? Cool! I'll have to download the ISO and try it tonight. You better not be lying!:) As for the others. That's what I feared!:) I have a 2.3.x kernel compiled for my USB mouse, but I just wanted a distro. that had an option of using the devel. kernel so that it can pick up the USB mouse. It's not so much for me as it is for my friends which I help install linux on. I guess they'll all have to wait unless they want to compile their own kernel!:)
I was hoping that by version 7.0 (RedHat or Mandrake) that it'll be able to find my USB mouse upon setup. I didn't see word of that. Anyone know if/when/how this might ever be done?

My $0.02CDN!

I might be able to upgrade from pine! :)
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
print "Location: http://www.microsoft.com/default.ida?$ENV{'QU ERY_STRING'}\n\n";
exit;
I don't know why there's a space showing up in the word QUERY_STRING above, but you get the picture.
:)
Let's get everyone running apache (that's getting hit by stupid admins) to do this!

It's not that difficult to see.

Does anyone still have the tar.gz of the theme for e. I didn't even know it was out already. I was waiting for it. Thanks.
I think we need a new section for companies coming out of the closet and seeing the light!?
Everyday, we get a few articles on so-and-so company is now porting to/supporting linux.
Don't get me wrong, it's very good news, but I think it's so common now that it deserves its own seciton.
What do you think?

Good! I used Java Workshop while TA a course. It sucked! VAJ is much better. Of course I do all my stuff with vim! :)
