I've been talking to the Xiph guys, it's true, I believe Monty himself will be starting work on a flash for the NEXII/IIe within a couple weeks, if it turns out to be technically possible.
Sweet! I don't see why it wouldn't be technically possible though? What's in one of those NEXII(e) anyways? Or is it possibly the firmware size won't fit? Anyone know how big the flash ROM for the firmware is?
"Also, Xiph has been working with a couple different companies to bring Vorbis to a portable near you; stay tuned."
How does he know this? Can anyone confirm this? I'm a NEXII owner and have been emailing Frontier Labs for a bit now. (Every friend that I recommend this to, that has subsequently purchased a NEXII(e) have been harassed by me to email them as well). But I've never heard any official word from them that they're even working on it. Is it true!? If it is! Woohoo! Anyone have links to at least one other site that has these rumours?
I'm still using a PIII-700 and it's plenty fast for me. I make computers for friends and family and I ALWAYS suggest that they DON'T go for the latest and greatest. I tell them it's a waste of money and that it'll drop in price within a month. Instead, I always go for that 1 specific CPU that has the best price/performance ratio. I believe right now, that point is currently at P4-1.6 or 1.7. Anyhow, the one immediately after it is usually a bigger jump than all the ones below it. Fast CPUs just aren't necessary. I tell them to get more RAM instead of a faster CPU. They'll end up seeing a bigger performance difference. And please don't tell me about the 123123123 FPS I can get in Q3 with a faster CPU. It's just NOT necessary for 99% of the people out there that actually purchases systems.
What OS they should put on it is a completely different story!:)
If the US government was serious about preventing MS from becoming a monopoly, they should ban them from producing PC hardware.
NB: I added the bold text above
Perhaps you missed out in the last few years. Last I heard, they were a CONVICTED monopoly, and we're still waiting for the sentance from Keller-Kotar (or something like that)
If you own a NEX II like I do, please write to frontier labs and let them know that you'd like an ogg decoder in their firmware and that it's even freely available for them to use now too!
Then we won't having to worry about that stupid mp3 licensing fee.
All I have to say is I'm glad I graduated from there already

"This isn't about trying to get people to move from Unix to Microsoft products, it's about offering ways for both systems to peacefully coexist," Houston stressed.
From the article:
"What we want to do is write once and have it work with everything," said Russ Sanon, senior manager for quality-assurance engineering at Shutterfly. "But it falls onto the lap of the individual browser manufacturer. There's nothing that we do that's proprietary. Everything that we write should work with W3C-complaint specs."
A quick trip to the old trusty w3c validator and you'll find that the front page isn't even compliant!
Bad Russ. Anyone have Russ's email address? He needs to learn how to use the resources of this thing called the "web".
There is ONE type of product that M$ does well, and makes an honest living with - Input devices. This is the ONLY area where I've seen them actually innovate. (Mouse wheel, first company with an all-surface optical - The grid-pad opts from Sun don't count).
As long as they stay far away from software, they're golden.
Perhaps you've never heard of the monstrosity called thexbox?
First off, I don't use Chatzilla, but from what I read, it gave me no info. on Chatzilla itself.
The editor reviews Chatzilla as a IM client? You can't really compare. That's like saying, "Computers suck, they don't cut my lawn well". It would have been wiser to perhaps compare Chatzilla to say, BitchX (my IRC client of choice), or XChat or *another IRC client* ???:)
OK, who thought this was flamebait? This guy is actually right.
Swimming in particular will release a lot of tension everywhere, but more importantly, your posture will be good, since all your back muscles (trapezius etc.) get such a good workout.
Swimming does wonders for me. Sitting in front of a computer all day without a break without any regular exercise, no matter how ergonomic my setup, causes problems.
Thank you.
What's wrong with you people. It wasn't flamebait, it was a statement of fact. I've had no problems, I can only attribute it to the fact that I actually get out and do OTHER things. Basketball, hockey, ultimate, tennis, swimming, WHATEVER, like I said before, ANYTHING!
it's the people using them. The problem is the people with these problems do NOTHING BUT tapping away on the keyboard. You GOTTA do other things. Get outside and play frisbee or something. ANYTHING!
...With Sony you have to worry about budgeting and if you can afford a fifth subscription...
You make some good points. But to be honest, if the games that come out for consoles are anything like EverCrack (which apparently FFXI, and Everquest (duh?) will be) then I can pretty much guarantee that I won't be playing more than one game at a time anyways!:) Has anyone here that played EverCrack played *anything* else during their time with this addictive game? No, I didn't think so!:) I could hardly find enough time for the 1 game. On the other hand, if Nintendo jumps in with Online versions of things like Mario Cart, Tennis, Golf, Party etc. Then yes, I see the benefit of having a single billing point for all of these services. But these games are more for jumping in and out of then EverCrack was. Kinda like Quake (I/II/III) or CounterStrike vs EverQuest or Ultima Online. They are different types of games that require different amounts of attention. I think there's room for both. I think I'd like Nintendo to have a server for their Nintendo games (as mentioned above) so I can jump in and out with or without friends and pay them a small monthly fee, AS WELL AS, have bigger servers for the larger more involved games like Phantasy Star Online. Do you think the M$ centres can support both?! I don't know about that. I'd pay for PSO seperately from the Ninendo services, because they are much different. Just my $0.02.
The first thing that jumped out at me was this interesting trend I see on the chart.
The companies that have long red lines (meaning the time it took for them to ship since their announcements, ie HYPE) are all gone!:)
The ones that kept a relatively consistent schedule are still around. Once again, a smart business plan wins, not super-hyped, non proven stuff.;) (Yeah.. I know. I'm biased. Nintendo Forever!:)
(On a side note, I wonder how long the line would've been for the xbox!:)
Hmm, I really liked FF7 a _lot_ tho. I still think it's the best FF ever made, especially with all the minigames and the really nice art (not shiny stuff, which it had too, but the art art, like some of the backgrounds in the Ancient Capital [drool]). The only nasty thing about it was how Square was so fond of telling people how great it was that the game took up 3 CDs, when in fact the game itself occupies only a few hundred MB and is on every CD, and the rest is used up by FMV.
I must say, I did like the spell 'Knights of the Round'!!:) I didn't play it, just saw it. I could have also have seen how annoying it would have been if you needed to use it alot though! Apparently you couldn't skip it! (For those of you who don't know, this spell took about 2 min. to cast because it just played a (really nicely done) FMV EVERY time you casted it!)
I stopped playing FF after they stopped making it for Nintendo consoles. I hated the PSO, I have a PS2 and GCN. I didn't play FFX for PS2. A friend got it and he said it's pretty much the same stuff. Nothing special. (Well, except for the graphics of course) Maybe now that they're developing for Nintendo again, they'll put a little more effort into the gameplay/storyline? I'd take FFIII on SNES over FFX on PS2 anyday!:)
This is good news! What's next? An abstraction of the widget sets so that programmers can code to a neutral API that can be deployed on both GTK and QT (Or Gnome and KDE) at once?!?! When are we going to see that?:)
...
Until they're more like OE, I'm not switching... ...
I use PINE myself, however, my work mate uses Evolution. He says it mimicks Outlook VERY well. (Well, it doesn't handle stupid VBA viruses though!:) But you probably don't want that 'feature' anyways!)
I forgot to mention that it'll cost you $99 for a one year membership to become a lindows.com 'insider'. Bleh.. the audacity to ask me for money before they have a product! I might have to change my mind.
For those curious, you can sign up to get the sneak preview. I'm curious enough to at least see the sneak preview before I bash away like the rest of you. I'd rather be an informed basher rather than a newbie/fanboy/hax0r kind of basher that we see so much on/.:)
DSL, with its ridiculously long install wait time, crappy PPPoE platform (In other words, shell out another $100 for a router that will do it for you so all your machines can have a 'normal' connection), and a general lack of value (+$15 for a static IP? Get real Ameritech)
On the other hand you have cable, which @home and all their partners managed to bumble enough to make people stay away from cable for a LONG time.
I believe this is what the discussion is all about. Why is it that broadband is so hard to come by in the US and if you can get it, why is it so bad? (BTW, I didn't read the article cuz it has been/.'ed already, so work with me here)
I'm Canadian and I think I'm the luckiest person in the world! For $20/month I have a choice of a 3Mb cable connection or a 1.2Mb ADSL connection. They have to fight for my business, and it's now down to $20/month. (Well, for 6 months anyways, reg. price for me is $35/month). But still, from what I here you get for $150/month in the US, I'm laughing! Why is it that Rogers (one of the Canadian providers of the @home service) was able to switch over to their own backbones after the excite@home fiasco and still give me this great service at an unbelievable price (I do believe it's the cheapest in the world!)
I thought the US had more money AND technology. They also have more people and assuming relatively simular needs to Canadians, they'd have a much bigger demand!
I don't claim to know the answer but I'd thought I'd share with you Americans the experiences I get up here in the great white north in my igloo with a 3Mb connection for $20/month.:)
There are some VERY cool games coming out for the GameCube.
So right. I completely forgot to mention that the line up coming down the pipe for NGC is far more compelling than any other console right now. All I see coming from the big N is fun fun fun! Zelda anyone?!?! Metroid, Mario Sunshine, Star Fox and a heck of a lot more. And those are only the first party titles! We haven't even mentioned any third party titles!
I also neglected to mention that there are also other games available for the NGC that isn't so kiddish. Just take a look at Resident Evil. If I had kids, I definately wouldn't let them play that!

P.S. Thanks xiph.org dudes!!!
Instead of wasting money on a water cooling unit, why don't people just spend that money on a faster processor!?!?!
silly overclockers!

that would explain why AMD is backing M$ in the M$ trial that's going on!
It scares me to see huge companies like this, conspiring in court.
Honestly though, I thought it would have been Intel, not AMD doing this.
