As I would see it, Linux's main advantage over these operating systems, both Windows and Novell, is that it can be configured and re-compiled to fit a specific task, and is there for more flexible in design than proprietary OSs. However, everyone refuses to acknowledge this and stick with the philosophy that Netware is a File/AppServer by Design, and Windows 9x/NT/2K/XP is a Desktop by design, and Windows NT/2K/2K3 Servers are all App/File servers that don't work for shit but are prettier and easier to configure. True, when Linux was originated, it was just a pet project, look at how far it has come, sure it is immature, but if people would take time to optimize the system, and set a Linux Box to a certain set of tasks, then they would realize, that Linus's Pet Project is a little more mature that they were lead to beleive.
As far as the turn-out for Novell, good to see so many faithful to that NOS. Netware is still Superior in the area of file serving, perhaps with this initiative we will see some growth with the App server area. I hope that anyone reading these posts will take note and try to get their departments to pick Novell back up and return Netware to its rightful throne as NOS. I myself have been working with Novell for two years now, and have been far impressed with it over my NT Stations, and yes, Cringe, even better than my AIX boxes.
Dude, IBM has all of this, and more...doh
Who better to go to for UNIX than the company humping ole ma bell.
I have been running AIX for quite some time and see no reason to try Solaris or SGI, IBM is working on Virtual Servers as well as SOI to create more powerful servers with less processors. Sure you can drone on and on about how a many Processors you can shove into a Sun, but just remember those good ole licensing costs for your premium Oracle Database. If I remember right that's per processor right???
I was working on my Terabyte server, I have a 200 and a 250, but I diverted my funds to living expenses instead of building my personal data whorehouse. I intend to finis this system by year end of 2k3 though.
I read through the article yesterday. Damn that sucks, MS has set another standard that shouldn't exist in the first place. What the hell is new. The only difference between this and Java is that someone owned Java. Now Microsoft gets a chance to butcher without remorse or circumstance. The only thing that seems to piss me off is that all of us geeks are too busy bitching over then standards of how MS can do it, rather than concentrating on how to bring the software titan down. If everyone here seems to know so much about programming and XML, join up with OpenOffice.org and get starting on making the superior office product. Meanwhile, low-life pirates like me should do our best to spread the word of open software and distribute the goods to the public.
Now quit your bitching and let's show how much the world doesn't need to rely on Bill G and the bald jumping jackass Steve-O B.

I can't help but reinforce what was said earlier about depending on various species. All species are to have an even set of chromosomes, but you can't count on playboy bunny taking it from Black Beauty and expect to get a centaur. Nor can you expect a ass with 62 chromosomes and a Przewalski horse with 66 chromosomes to produce the offspring. If the Hybrid was possible, and had 64 chromosomes, the odds are that two of the chromosomes would have not have pairs. Pairing of the chromosomes being the most important part of genetic structure.
Real Engineers, like the ones I work with. Like one who invited me over to his house to help him figure out why an iMAC couldn't connect to the internet. Only after I arrived to find out that the overpaid oaf first tried jumping on the net with another computer already connected to the ISP on that same phoneline, as well as the phone cord going from the RJ-11 port on the iMAC to a RJ-45 jack on the NIC, instead of to the wall. I think I would rather leave my life in the hands of some farm boy. He would probably remember to put life support onboard.
