Last I heard Direcway wasn't a Baby Bell. Hughes is more like the owners of the sky.
Ofcourse, realizing that the technology that you are using probably took a little be more to put into place than snaking a few fiber lines around and setting up a few hubs and servers, you would think that these companies would want to get a little of their money back
Yes, let's love IBM for their support of linux and forget their monopolization of the computer industry before Microsoft was a 13 year-old in his mom and dad's basement fucking with an Altair 8800.
Let's also give the Nazi Regime a Nobel prize for all their contributions to medicine, regardless of the fact that they only wiped out 6 million people to get the advancements.
IBM may have changed from those times thirty years ago, but that doesn't mean that you go embracing and extending them.
Millions have tried before, all have failed. This is not a new idea, it is a failed one. Nothing works in the business world better than COBOL. Migration has been tried in the past, PCs didn't have the power then, as they still don't now. Just because a billion dollar corp like Microsoft thinks that it owns the world and what they say goes, doesn't mean that it will work.
Mainframe processing is just now getting more focus again, and because Microsoft can't have it, they want everyone to migrate from it. I remember when Microsoft wanted to run all their own software for their business function, and in less than two weeks, they switched back to their midrange AS/400 systems. Why, because their shit still don't work right. And now we are discussing the security issues. Imagine if Blaster had a phone home trojan and gave some user access to all of that Business data. No lost money there!!!
We neither like nor hate IBM, we simply praise them for their support of Linux and other good things that they do and critique their patents of items that already exist and other stupid shit they tend to do.
Zealots like and hate things blindly. Zealots usually turn a blind eye to the flaws of what they support. Don't be a zealot.
The Slashdot community is far more intelligent than this.
Just as this is announced PalmOne releases a new Tungsten T4 (bluetooth enabled) with a 2GHz 970 PowerPC Processor with a 21" display in a 3 inch body.
I guess Palm is just one of those companies that just doesn't know when to let something die
Umm... no it wouldn't be Korean, Dog is eaten in many Asian countries, from as far North as Korea and Mongolia, to as far south as Vietnam, that I can verify with locals. The locals being from Vietnam, Korea and China. Mongolia is just assumed, but hell if it was as cold as fuck I would be eating anything I could too.
And do the the stupidity of my own canine, I think I will serve him up with some rice and veggies. Let me know if you want any as well
My company is working on moving more and more applications to AS/400 environment 5250 emulation and all. Granted if I have some of my way, I will do my best to get a GUI Window style application to interface with it, but at the moment a copy of the IDE costs around $12 Grand.
90% of the desktops are Windows-Based. Most Virus writers can purchase a PC and tools to develop a virus for under $200. Add maybe 3 years or so of experience with coding and you have probably code any virus you want to when dealing with Microsoft. This is why we hear about Worms in the news that are Windows-based.
One of the downfalls of Linux is that it puts a UNIX like environment in the hands of Joe Blow Virus Writer. Also, it puts Linux in the hands of Robbie the Retarded Systems Admin. Similar to What NT has done in the past.
And yes, the Ramen Worm was pretty impressive, had we all been running Redhat 6.2, the news might have mentioned it
Gimpy, obviously you are a very small minded individual if you worship Outlook over Notes. The Notes GUI is the only thing lacking in R5 or before, but now that Notes 6 is out, you have no reason to complain. I would gladly use Notes over Outlook anyday. As any person who does their research will tell you, "Exchange is a nice email system, Domino has a nice email system." I don't think you have near the reliability nor the ease of replication, nor the security of Domino with exchange.
And by the way, putz, if you hate Notes so much, go get your gay ass MS Outlook. It has a connector for Domino, and has had for several months. I hate the piece of shit that Microsoft concocted, so I will stick to Lotus Notes.
But for those of you who have to have an email client that only requires use of two braincells to operate and be so limited as to what you can do. Go to the M$ site and download the Outlook Connector for Lotus Notes. But if you happen to be supported by me, don't bitch when you can't get your Domino Apps to work in your outlook client.
Once again, I must reiterate, this is my first test of running Linux as a "Desktop!" Though I have already logged a Windows XP Crash, pretty embarrassing that it only took a week, while the Linux Counterpart is still chugging along.
23:08:54 up 19 days, 2:52, 5 users, load average: 0.49, 0.25, 0.35
I have RAID 5 configured with Hot-Swap Drives and a UPS with Dual Processors and Dual Hot-Swap Power Supplies, so a lost hard drive or a lost power supply, or even a loss of power is a poor excuse for my desktop to drop out on me, I hope it makes a year or more.
I too have problems with WinXP, although I do hate it, I have to admit that is is much more rock solid OS than anything MS POS before it. But as much of a goober than I am for running lowly Redhat, I have had some extremely impressive uptimes. 22:20:48 up 17 days, 2:04, 5 users, load average: 0.37, 0.25, 0.14 is my latest, but I have another machine which should is pushing 50+ days already, just haven't ran cat5 to it since I moved in
For me, the record to beat was set by AIX 4.3.3 at 243 days.
As for MS running linux, the engineers are probably going to be totally confused when they can't find a registry
This isn't about Linux being a Derivative of UNIX. What the person was referring to was derivative works of UNIX being used in Linux. However, that is a bullshit claim for the simple fact is that Linux was capable of SMP before IBM became involved. JFS isn't a derivative work of UNIX because it is used in more than just UNIX, also OS/2 and probably every other damn IBM OS. RCU was some one elses deal entirely, and NUMA, I believe is also used in Mainframes. Don't quote me on NUMA, I could be wrong. Best yet, AIX hasn't been on the x86 Platform for years, so what good does it do to implement code for PowerPC on a Kernel that was designed for x86. I would think that starting from scratch would ultimately be quicker.
Because of this I do not take the suit seriously. I still run 14 AIX machines with no intention of taking them down. I will continue to do so until the machines either breakdown of old age, fall into disuse, or get taken in a Software Audit
Well, I have seen Small Engines with up to 29 HP, but I thought most of them were for Commercial Lawnmowers. Those would be the big ole Zero Radius monsters that they use to mow stadiums and what not.
To further add to the Theoretical Max ratings of a Small Engine's HP, when you buy from an OEM, that is was you get. But when you buy from a Retailer be wary, the numbers can be upped even more. Today I seen an engine rated at 5 HP Max that was sold as 6.75. Though I know the engine is a high quality engine and worth the $300 that it was sold for, I would be seriously upset to find out as a consumer that what I had purchased was marketed to death.
Do your homework. 3.5 HP engine's actual output is around 2 HP. Same with all other Lawnmowers, actual output isn't near what it says on the engine. What you buy is the theoretical maximum output. As for the standard mowers today, 20HP riding lawnmower is a big damn mower. I think I see Commercial mowers with engines that big. Riding Lawnmowers range generally from 8 to 19 HP. Once again this is just theoretical maximum HP.
I am sure some if you talk to some UNIX/gnu linux distros, they would tinker with it. Mandrake would be a good company to ask to include programs. Distros like Redhat and such wait until the application is more coming of age.
You could also jump on serveral mailing lists and such. Perhaps, post you thoughts in a public forum to be rediculed.
I'm mostly curious which network they will bring down first. There are a few major ones. I sure miss audiogalaxy!!! What do you think: EDonkey or Kazaa?
They aready brought down Napster, you dolt! Granted , some of the newer ones seem to far exceed the old ways of Napster. Now the justice system has made it known that the methods of filesharing are legit and it is the people who are using them that should be dealt with. I am surprized that Napster still continues not to function after that ruling. I would think that such a ruling would bring it back to the front of the line, but I guess not.
It has Arnold
It doesn't have Cameron
It has Arnold
The original studio who created T2 is now defuncted
It has Arnold
It doesn't have Linda Hamilton
It has Arnold
It doesn't have the same writers or any other staff for that matter
It has Arnold
It doesn't have Furlong
I think the only things that it does have is far outweighed by the amount that the movie lacks.
Perhaps someone can get Cameron back to fix this up.
James, if your out there, please fix this piece of hollywood shit called Terminator 3.
Once again, some one must point out that Slashdot is a forum linking to articles reported various information sources. Slashdot is not a News Organization.
Granted, I know I will lose my positive karma for this, but businesses have a right to protect their technology through patents and copyrights. However, when software is opened up for all to see, technology can move at a much faster rate. Ofcourse some companies such as IBM and HP decide to embrace this idea and improve upon it, where SCO and Microsoft refute the OSS practices and start condemning them for showing promise.
SCO's actions are actually quite typical and predictable. If a company finds a way to exploit an income, they will continue to do so until that option is no longer viable. To back this, SCO will continue to become more of a pain, such as a two year-old child would until they a) get attention, in this case money via purchase or court victory; or b) get knocked on their ass and told to shut the hell up. Currently the legal system has so many holes that b) is not really an option.
Back to my original point though, patents allow the corporate world to protect company technology.
The original thought was so that Joe Blow Business Man could invent something and not be run over by Evil Corporation X. There are some cases where the small guy still needs help in this matter. Open Source has decimated the need for this in the software world.
As an Admin for both AIX and Linux I must say, WHERE IN THE FUCK IS THIS TECHNOLOGY????
Sure Linux has JFS and NUMA and a few other things to boot that all the big and bad UNIXes have, but where are all the good AIX things that make AIX what it is? I mean, no smit or smitty, no websm, no JFS2. For christ sake, they didn't even bring over the lvm, or the damn 'pg' command in.
Jesus Darl, JFS could have come from anyway, SMP was bound to be enhanced, NUMA is throughout the UNIXes. Any BSD Junkie could have felt the need to throw that in there. Quit picking on the big dogs for doing things right.
This just in, SCO sues pfizer for inventing viagra because it violates morality. Guess some Eighty year-old IBMer ran off with Darl's Wife.
Here's a question (and mod me Redundant if someone's already pointed this out...I'm in a hurry): Why can't they just point out the infringing source code in the kernel without revealing their own proprietary code that is being infringed upon? Are they afraid that we might reverse-engineer the genie that is already out of the bottle or is this all just more obfuscation about what is really a legal non-issue?
What really confuses me is that some of the core developers of Linux are UNIX developers, how could anyone not expect it these developers to throw some of their original material in the mix. How in the hell could anyone expect Linux to be a truly unique OS with that kind of some of the UNIX big dogs adding to the backbone.
SCO knows this and thinks that that point will be neglected. Silly them

I didn't say that Slashdot wasn't full of zealots. I just thought I would hand down the order and command intelligence among the forum.
