Diversity is probably a good thing, especially with natural sources. For example, the sun is only up half of the day, depending on your location and time of year. The wind doesn't always blow as well.
Besides, I don't think any one source of power is going to adequately meet our needs anyway, and really - wind and water energy sources are fueled by the sun anyway.
sometimes, asking isn't enough. My present roommate is a bit... excessive... with his bittorrent usage.
Since I never quite figured out how to qos all his torrent traffic, i just took to unplugging his computer. I've asked repeatedly, and he repeatedly pushes the envelope, so meh. When he wakes up without internet, it's his problem, and if he has an issue with it, he can fix it by capping his stuff.
I just don't get why it's necessary to consume 100k/s or more of upload traffic for bittorrent at ANY time whatsoever. Besides that, he isn't the only one who uses bittorrent, and it's unfair to others if they can't because it makes web surfing impossible between the two of them.
Social interaction reduced the problem, but did not eliminate it. This is why the router is in the open.
Wouldn't it be funny if the eternal afterlife was only such a "paradise" because the dictator ruled with an iron fist?;) In that case, you'd be right. 80 years of freedom isn't worth giving up when you're looking at an eternity of dictatorship.
Cox actually overcaps your line. I don't have the site anymore, but there is a bandwith meter that Cox tech support uses to rate your line, and even though my service is 10mb/s it was getting more like 10.5. Also - this was before the speed boost option and whatnot that we have now. I also routinely get 1400KB/s downloads on torrents of any reasonable size - but usually 1100ish.
Truthfully, I think I'm an exception within my age group (Young 20's) in that I don't channel surf. It annoys the Fuck out of me because I'll get sucked into whatever is on and want to finish the show, which is impossible...
Anyway, I've learned to tune out advertising, as you say. This seems to be why ads are starting to progress to within the show itself. Take Heroes for example. Why do you think the Nissan Versa and Nissan Rogue are so prevalent? That Heero made such a point about getting the Versa? Well... Nissan paid a -lot- of money, that'd be my guess. If you watch these episodes online, Nissan has transitioned the advertising to match with the shows progression on vehicles as well. (The other two major advertisings were Chase and Cisco, fyi)
Anyway, you really can debate the legitimacy of advertisements, and how excessive they've become. You can debate and quantify how they ruin content, but I don't think you can deny their evolution. They will adapt, and so will we. The slow will be annoyed, and others just won't give a shit.
I'm a big fan of firefox, and I use it daily. That said, Firefox 2 is not fast. IE is much much faster... It has the advantage of having most of its dependancies already being loaded into memory, however.
I am told firefox 3 is way faster, but I'm waiting for the actual release to find out.
Of course, they can just push the firmware over their systems. They can flag a particular update across modems in a given category, and deem it as mandatory.
There's always the possibility that it might brick the modem... But it's not a 100% chance. It's not even a good chance. Also - those modems do not cost 100 bucks, even after you include tech support man hours and shipping costs...
I can't see the post you're replying to, so I can only guess that the firmware exploit is what you're referring to, but they do not need to replace those modems to force a firmware update.
It doesn't help that the default code will always contain 0-9 for possible keys, either.
From a user perspective, I can't blame them. You wouldn't want to be on the phone with someone who thinks their wireless "DHL" modem doesn't need power because it's wireless, and try figuring out what those tiny letters are...
I think it would have been a lot more secure if they had used phrases that added up to 26 characters instead. But really, not many manufacturers have the balls to support secure wep by default...
What is the point of protecting yourself from some arbitrary threat if the cost is becomming your own worst enemy?
My mom once heard about the illegal wire tapping on us citicens, her response was "So what? I have nothing to hide!" Not a very sound opinion, considering if an authority doesn't have the integrity to follow their own laws, I certainly wouldn't trust them to not find a reason to detain me, or worse.
Besides, I see no proof that illegal wire tapping did anything besides invade our privacy. It's not like they -couldn't- have gotten a warrant either, they just needed to show a reason, instead of recording calls all willy nilly.
I'm under the impression that toilet bowl water is considered "waste water" and is handled differently than drinking water.
However, urinating in the shower does disrupt the system...
It has been years since I did my school report on this (something like 8th grade?) but at the very least, they treat the two groups of water differently... Though I vaguely remember that they do something else with waste water than use it as drinking water. I could be wrong, though.
And of course, then there's the theory that global warming affects the ocean currents, that distribute the warm and cold climates, causing winters to be milder, and summers cooler...
Thats why here in AZ I wore a t-shirt Clear till Mid January. Oh ya.. I'm wearing a T-shirt now, too =)
Anyway, I think its too early to dismiss global warming like you are doing. I agree that the earth is robust, but seasonal extremes is one predicted outcome of this scenario.
I don't really see how this is practical. You have a handfull of candidates. Don't like any of them? Then what, do you just not vote, or do you vote for the one you dislike the least? (aka - like the most)
Since like is some arbitrary status, I really don't see how voting for the lesser evil is any different than voting for the one you like the most. Furthermore, how do you expect this change of categorization to influence the candidates?
Isn't that a perfect example of reverse prejudice? "This is nonsense, "society bending backward", all one is asking is to lay off the prejudice and petty tribalistic social status games. It seems that's too hard for a knuck dragging normie."
There's another approach. Since he said a lifespan of 150 - and the last 50 were crippled... Kill yourself at 100. problem solved.
But of course, wah wah.. people have a RESPONSIBILITY to others, such that their suffering for years is greatly outweighed by a few years of grieving....
Suspension bridges have a few critical areas where they HAVE to function. They basically have to support and channel the weight into the load bearing parts of the structures. You can do this in several ways, aesthetically. Not all are created equal.
The same is true for conventional bridges and cars. Angles play a huge role in structural integrity. Everyone gives new car designs crap for being flimsy in an accident, but they are engineering marvels. True - you can't cut the roof off without the frame caving in under the car's weight, but the implementation of crumple zones, collapsing engine mounts, and creative use of bent sheet metal are very effective in absorbing forces that might otherwise kill you. Besides, of course - using sheer force.
I would not want to be a passenger in a 60's car that collides head on with anything of equal mass and rigidity...
But yes, the base designs are the same, but I think you forget just how important the little changes are.
I was looking for more of a challenge personally... I'm at stage 18 or 19 thus far (of 19) The previous 17 stages were training exercises that pretty much - just introduced a new dynamic to the game. It was like being taught how to play rather than having a puzzle to creatively solve.
I applaud the game for applying a (To me) unique concept, and making it entertaining with some of the level design features (Like the writings on the wall, the talking iTurrets, and the companion cube. There was a lot of well spirited (if not demented) love put into the game. But... So far, I find it lacking. It hasn't been a challenge thus far. The solutions are obvious. The only things that were difficult were in execution; such as the backwards moving platforms, and double-jumping through the use of making a portal as you fall. The concepts = easy... Doing them... not so much.
I'm hoping that the free levels I saw somewhere will provide me with the entertainment I desire =)
There may be legal reasons why they can't offer games at a lower price than the retail package. Valve doesn't actually package them, they use a different company. (Activison, I think?)
When they first introduced steam, that company made a big hoopla about it being against their contract and such. (Think about it - if you can buy it online, and don't have to buy it from the stores... you think that packaging company makes any money?) The situation would be a bit worse if it was substantially cheaper online...
Now - will they do anything different, should this agreement change?... probably not.

"with 4 cpus gets pretty dang slow."
I guess I wasn't clear enough. These were AI's.
Yep. Hosting a 4 player game with 4 cpus gets pretty dang slow.
10 seconds pass as 1 second ticks in the game slow.
And I do have a 9450 with an 8800GTX running at 1920x1200

Then allow me to clarify - It was 70-80 degrees when I was wearing such clothes =) sometimes in the 90's ...
I'm actually very acclimated to the desert... I get cold around 72F and seek warmer clothing...

Couldn't they use the military to provide the man-power of building up that infrastructure?
I'd think it would also considerably lower the cost.
It's really what I would have envisioned our nations army to do in the first place..
There's another approach.

You can burn your own backup copies of the games you have... These IIRC are installable in the event steam goes the way of the dodo.
