  1. Re:Not enough, on Alan Turing Pardoned · · Score: 5, Insightful

To be fair to the Queen, he was guilty of something that was illegal at the time so a pardon is appropriate. The fact that it should never have been an issue, much less a criminal one, is, technically, not her fault. What she should do is pardon everyone who was ever convicted of being gay.

  2. Important to pass, not to understand or use on Ask Slashdot: How Important Is Advanced Math In a CS Degree? · · Score: 1

Getting your BSc or even your BSe (Software Engineering) will require calculus. You're unlikely to ever use it again since you won't pick a job that requires a deep understanding of the subject. You can even look up anything that you need to know and/or use libraries written by those with that deep understanding. Just get through the courses.

  3. I will live forever! on Research Suggests Polygamous Men Live Longer · · Score: 2, Interesting

In seriousness, I'm not surprised. From living this way for a while, I see a lot less stress on all parties most of the time. When there is stress, it's easier to deal with as you have a stronger close-knit support structure.

  4. Standard = more pixels per inch on The End of Non-Widescreen Laptops? · · Score: 1

I always pay the extra for the standard format screens. Manufacturers can sell a '20"' screen with hundreds of thousands fewer pixels when it's widescreen. I'd much rather have the pure screen real estate, especially for coding.

It's much easier to get hired after going to a tech school. I met people from my alma mater over the interview table.

  7. Only "PhD granting universities" were counted on CS Degrees Low in 2007 But Bouncing Back · · Score: 1

There are plenty of good colleges that don't grant PhDs that graduate Bachelors and Masters of CSc.

  8. Bootable Linux CD included on Hacking: The Art of Exploitation · · Score: 5, Informative

I'm half way through right now and I'm finding it extremely interesting and well written.
Some of the coding bits were easily skipped. Some of the format string exploits are still obscure after two readings, but the author mentions that this class of exploit is exceptionally rare. I look forward to finishing it, but I wish it covered more than just Linux specific hacks. There are no Windows or MacOS examples, though that may stem from something the reviewer didn't mention.
The book has a bootable Linux CD with all the code, compilers, shells and everything you might need to test and perform every one of the exploits mentioned.

  9. SOA on Your Worst IT Workshop? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I felt bad for the presenter of a two day course on SOA. No one told him that our business model revolves around building totally custom solutions that are rarely, if ever, allowed to talk to the open 'net. I finally explained this to him and he looked crestfallen. He asked the class (of engineers) and everyone agreed that we couldn't use any of it. A waste of time for all involved, costing many thousands of dollars.

  11. Will Apple do the same? on Sun Acquires CFS/Lustre, Becomes Windows OEM · · Score: 1

Apple doesn't make its own virtualization software, but even for the purposes of BootCamp, would this be an option for them? Letting me buy my next tower with both OS' preinstalled and working well together would save me enough hassle that I'd pay for it.

  12. Re:I remember this game. on The Making of Ghostbusters on the Commodore 64 · · Score: 1

This was a great game at the time. I played the Apple II version for months. Figuring out how to bypass the marshmallow man was by far the most difficult part for me as I didn't recognize that there was a door behind his feet. Graphics limitations have always plagued video games, whether the player is stuck trying to figure out what some arcane symbol means that is eventually determined to be a door, or a pattern repeats too often or too well and you miss a hiding spot in a modern FPS.

  13. Re:Worth while? For you, or your employer? on Would a CS Degree Be Good for Someone Over 30? · · Score: 4, Informative

That varies widely based on school. I went to an engineering school where "Learn by Doing" was the motto and we were deep into programming from day one as freshmen. They've since split off the majors into CS (math heavy) and Software Engineering, which is what we code monkeys actually do all day. Software Engineering majors aren't that easy to find, but if you happen to be around a college that has one, it may be more useful to you than a CS degree.
