How much do you want to bet that 5 years from now, the record industry will all love the internet because this year they finally figure out how to make money by selling music at a reasonable price?
There's not one new music selling place that hasn't at least broke even at $0.99 a track? ow long before we see that special "mini Album" by (insert pop star here) for 4.99 for *6* songs?
Of course, Jack Valenti will still be moaning, but the rest of the industry will be looking at him the same way they look at him when he talks about VCR's and rentals... I.e. "what were we thinking?" after having made more money per song by not having to pay hardly anything to distribute it.
This is NOT CORRECT.
Tivo does, in fact, make their own brand of DVR's. In fact, Best Buy and Circuit City sell Tivo branded systems.
Now, they may be made by some third party company. I'm sure this is the case, but it doesn't really matter. If you buy a Dell Axim, does that mean you go blame it on the Taiwanese manufacturer that made it? You could, but it won't get you anywhere. YOu need to go to Dell and complain about it. Just because they don't put it together doesn't mean it's not their product.
If the user bought a "Refurbished Tivo", he probably got it directly from Tivo. Every few months they put "remanufactured Tivos" on sale. Tivo's customer service reputation has taken a big hit lately, from the nature of the posts on the Tivo forums. Luckily, I haven't had any first hand experience with it, but I've seen/heard plenty of those who have had trouble just as the poster above had.
Why do I suddenly have images of a secret lair, a hairless cat, and a bald McBride with his pinky at the corner of his mouth asking for....
1 Mil.. er... 1 bil... er... 3 BILLION dollars.
Add a bunch of fancy titles to your name, including every known Microsoft cert you can get by using cram session, and maybe some of the new Linux certs as well--- and "consult".
Leave the real work for the grunts whom you are helping, and learn how to ask open ended questions to techs who don't express themselves like "normal" people do, so that they come up with their own answers. Don't forget, if you get into a bind, you can always check your resources and go ask on the internet, and just bring them back the emails/posting using the biggest words. More than likely this will cause a light bulb to go off above those tech's heads, and they will go code away for you. (While you consult with that cute secretary down the hall, of course!)
"maybe we can get them to abandon their project if we sue?"
If this were to somehow get sent to trial, it would cost $$$ to defend, even if it's just paying for a plane ticket to the US and a lawyer for a few hours to say "ha ha, this is all voluntary on the ISP's side!". So maybe these jerks are trying to take a page from all the large patent lawsuits out there and sue someone small just to intimidate them?
...a setup that would allow me to put my computer 20-30 feet away in another room, but still have the things I need in front of me.
Powerswitch/reset button
Monitor
Mouse
Keyboard
CD/Burner/DVD/Floppy/whatever extra firewire/usb storage device
and a USB 2.0 hub for extra hardware
If I could have that (and be able to use graphic intensive apps, like games) for a good price, they'd have my money in a heartbeat! Especially if one day it could be done wirelessly, or with just one wire to run to wherever I wanted my "desktop". Who cares how noisy the fan is if it's in another room????

I couldn't agree more.
I bought more music during the 9 or so months that I used Napster than in the previous nine years. (i usually listened to NPR or talk radio before that). Heck, I even got a CD player installed in my car just to listen to more. I burned alot of my CD's, but I bought the CD's of artists that I like because it was easier to do, and I felt like I wanted to support them. Now I'm drifting back into talk radio and NPR again because I don't want to deal with all the "goodies" you get added in with kaaza. So who lost here? Everyone.

They were just band geeks!

My first thought of this lawsuit is:
"maybe we can get them to abandon their project if we sue?"

...with real better-than-disney "motion simulator" effects when there is another traffic jam caused by wrecks!
