  1. Two robot arms on The Dismounted Soldier Problem · · Score: 4

How about this: two robot arms, with shoes where the grabber would normally be. Person stands in the shoes. The arms would controlled so that they move freely when the feet are above "ground", and lock up when they hit "ground level".

This would have the advantage of also working on stairs or gradients, or even wading through mud.

I have seen something similar in arcade games simulating skiing. These only had one degree of freedom for each foot though. For this to work you would need six.

Of course, things could get unpleasant if the machine crashed. Want to risk being a human wishbone anyone? :-)

  2. Is it paranoia if everyone is out to get you? on Cookies, Ad Banners, and Privacy · · Score: 1

To all the people who say they don't care...

Its all nice and good if these stats are being
used to target advertising at you. Hey, i kinda
like the idea of getting relevant banner ads.

What should scare you is when you apply for a
job and the employer checks with doubleclick and
they say this guy's a no-no cause you accidentaly
    clicked through to some pr0n/extremist/wacko
    sites.

  4. Voodoo programming on The Programmer's Stone · · Score: 1

Great read, reminded me of something i've seen in programming practical classes at uni -- the phenomenon which one of my fellow tutors has aptly labelled "Voodoo programming" in which students cut and paste bits an pieces out of the notes... and then yell and scream when it doesn't work.

  5. Re:Idoru... Yeah, they exist on Virtual Models Come To Life · · Score: 2

Yes, virtual idols are real. Hmm, that didn't sound right... um, anyway, check this out: There is a virtual idol called Kyoko Date, she has a life story and everything. Nice graphics, not quite photorealistic, but very nice.

  6. What I think will happen... on Australian Net Censorship · · Score: 1

The legislation is completely infeasable, from what i have heard. Probably some "consultant" spun a line about filtering software, and the powers that be believed it (proving in the process that they are completely incompetent). I do not believe it will last long.

My worry is that it will last just long enough to wipe out all the little ISPs, while the big fish buckle down and weather the storm (to mix several metaphores indiscriminantly). The effect will be to destroy all the little stuff, the independant views that bind the web together, leaving just the big companies with legal muscle to spin their same old cotton-candy lies.

  7. Red Eye on Competition for Jolt/Dew/Coffee? · · Score: 1

I'm not sure whether this is just local to Australia, but there is a drink called Red Eye Gold which contains guarana, caffiene, and ten other types of crud, sickly sweet, and pretty much consciousness distilled. I imagine this Bawls stuff is similar.

Its the kind of thing i only take occasionally because i know anything this powerful has to be way addictive. Anyone know the effects of prolonged guarana usage?

  8. But Freshmeat is not an obvious site for newcomers on Linux.com Finally Has Content · · Score: 1

This is different. freshmeat.net is not an obvious first choice for newcomers looking for Linux information, and so there is no obligation to be relevant (I think the new format is pretty good, btw).

linux.net and linux.com are obvious first places however. As such it isn't unreasonable to expect the owners of these sites to publish Linux information, or at least put in some prominent links to more appropriate starting points.

Is it really appropriate for linux.net to be selling CDs of windows development products?
