I have just moved back to Linux from OS X, RSS and Google Reader is on the way out, so it looks like I'll be reading mailing lists instead, and I'm posting on Slashdot again.
If I remember correctly the Director General made a rather craven apology to the govt after the bullshit Hutton report. But the real mistake was to even get drawn into a shouting match with Downing St over such nonsense as whether Kelly had said things had been `sexed up'. What a load of crap; who cares what that guy could or couldn't bring himself to admit.. the whole fucking planet could see that Blair had lied about going to war, so it was stupid to even argue about it.
The BBC is great, but they got beaten down over that and have never quite recovered. And (to get slightly back on topic) you can bet if Blair was a Scientologist (and if he wasn't about to leave), they'd be hosed on this one as well.
Nope, that will happen whenever the Tories next get into power and end the licence fee. Unless Labour do it first of course. The beginning of the end was probably when they got fscked by the government over the Dr Kelly/Butler report business.
I learnt to program on my Spectrum - and a lot more besides. It wasn't just a gaming console, and it's significance for the industry was much wider also.
The clock is typical of the kind of nonsense that came out of the Media Lab, but my girlfriend (yes, real) is very interested in the tote laptop bags. I can see why - the bags you usually get for laptops are about as dorky as it gets.
Maybe they were recreating one of the handheld 'game and watch' versions. To be honest, that's what I think of when soemone mentions Donkey Kong. My friends and I rarely had spare cash to spend at amusement arcades, but we could get the handheld games for christmas etc.
Yep that pretty much says the same thing - no prospect of *short-term* return. the $10 million came from Mark Shuttleworth selling Thawte, not Ubuntu support tickets
BTW I think Ubuntu is great - been using it since the first release (when we actually did have naked cheerleaders on the desktop wallpaper). And I'm not saying the community or the attitude of the distro is irrelevant.
The Ubuntu Way of doing things... is what was desperately missing within the Linux/OSS community.
You mean a millionaire prepared to spend lots of his own money with no prospect of short-term return? Yeah probably. Maybe if Linux distros became even more like sports teams, we'd have cheerleaders as well!
Besides, you may no longer feel this way in 10 years when you can't get home insurance without cameras recording you 24/7. Add genetic profiling into the mix and we've achieved a real world version of humanities worst nightmares. Well done "us".
Arguments need to be fought on their merits, not by appealing to paranoia. If you have a good reason why the police (or anybody) shouldn't be able to erect cameras in *public places* (not your bedroom), then better to use that, rather than bringing in straw-man arguments. Don't make yourself easy to dismiss.
And if you look around the world, most of the worst dictatorships and autocracies are in poor countries lacking the infrastructure for this kind of thing. They rely perfectly well on the old fashioned methods like informers, lies and a climate of fear.
I personally would *LOVE* to use a version of Linux that MS has made useable.
You mean like they made their own OS useable? I don't see what exactly would MS add to Linux to make it more useable. You think they are going to strongarm all the third party hardware vendors to write up-to-date Linux drivers? Because that's about the only significant thing they could do.
I'm not American, so remind me which one the Second Amendment is again - is it the one which enshrines the right of every citizen to carry automatic assault rifles?
I can't understand why Windows hasn't brought in virtual desktops as a means of managing multiple windows. I know they played around with it as an optional add-on in XP, but he implementation was abysmal. Anyone who's used a Unix desktop knows just how useful it can be when done properly - or even semi properly, like in Gnome.
Effectively a virtual desktop manager decomposes your list of windows into two extra dimensions, rather than having to cycle through a single 1-d list (or worse still, constantly use your mouse to select one of a number of identical buttons on a task bar). So why have the Windows designers consistently ignored it?

In other words, this test is pretty bogus. I agree.

Just read this if you were in any doubt about what a fscking idiot the man is.
would you mind not swearing please? There are kids reading this for fuck's sake.
The RIAA thanks you for your support in its fight against piracy and theft.
its not it's..

I did a search for 'black holes' one time when I needed to write an essay as a grad student. Interesting mixture of results.
Does that mean every technology or product released by anybody not supporting Linux is a 'step back for Linux'?
The inventor is a female - and a pretty hot one at that.

Irrespective of its validity, the parent is certainly not offtopic
I'm betting you didn't even have to check your collection before answering that..

the role was made for him.+
So this item is appearing in what other news outlets?
