  1. airspace law on No Billboards in Space · · Score: 1

In the US, as long as the blimp flies above whatever the FAA says the minimum altitude is, you can't sue. Which means, you can only get money if the government says that you can. So, simple solution: set the FAA level for ads at one light-year.

  2. observe security processes in action on Real Security? · · Score: 1

security plans should be beta-tested with non-geek testers over several weeks. after my favorite users forgot their PGP passphrases once or twice, i learned to accept that highly intelligent folks could not remember passwords that they didn't use every day. so, i compromised: i encouraged users who wanted a reminder to put mnemonics in their wallets... and to give me revokation privileges!

  3. a simple analogy on When Should a Consultant Question Decisions? · · Score: 1

contract programmer : starbucks barista ::
    contractor : sommelier

sometimes the customer asks you for a recommendation, if you're a sommelier; in either case, bring 'em whatever drink they want.

  4. how 'bout common-sense? on Text-Mining Your E-mail · · Score: 1

a nice methods paper, but mr. kleinberg doesn't use any of the free metadata that comes with email and news: to, from, subject.

i use outlook, and cluster my mail by sender... most of the time, that tells me pretty easily whether a given piece of mail is a work email, a personal email or a mailing list. from there, i check the subject line of work emails, just to confirm my categorization of work/humor/administrivia.

i'd want to see a comparison between a metadata-only method (rules and filters on the RFC 822 header) and mr. kleinberg's method before i'd consider using it.

  5. a lament for text-only altavista on Google's Weakness, AltaVista's Strength · · Score: 2, Interesting

long after banner ads had come to altavista, you could avoid them easily by using its text-only mode.
powerful commands and no ads... what a concept!

i only switched to google after altavista finally got rid of their text-only page.

  6. follow the baby boomers on The Price Of Doing Business · · Score: 1

hmmm... i can't say that i'm raring to move from SF to baltimore (lowest op-cost US city, according to the ref), despite the tough job climate in the bay area.

however, companies might find plenty of gracefully aging but eminently employable geeks in those US states to which many baby boomers are retiring: florida, arizona and new mexico come to mind.

the op costs would be low *and* part of the tech population might be enthused about relocating.

  7. think about the advertising implications... on Pervasive Computing Systems · · Score: 1

    >This is a neat system; you can point at

if i mean to point at the poster, but accidentally point at the free poster frame from double-bat-point-click.com, do i have to suffer through a commercial jingle from at&t?

just as users of the www have had to learn to ignore banner ads, close pop-ups, etc., so users of this technology will have to learn to ignore gibbering, day-glo beer ads.
