  1. Re:Great Opportunity on Growth Job Sector: Freelance Technical Support · · Score: 2, Interesting

True story from a friend who works for local cable company: he was sitting in the van doing paperwork when a fat, unattractive woman knocks on the window and asks how much cable is per month. $30. She asks if she can *BLOW* him for cable. He politely refuses, she's way gross. She then ups the ante and offers sex, but no way, she's an ogre. He makes his excuses and gets the hell out of her neighborhood (trailer park, too many jokes flooding my head...) Funny thing is my pal told people back at the office about the encounter and now everyone talks about it. So moral of the story: bored & lonely housewives are not hot, they are alone for a reason.

  2. area 51 + flash mob = truth overnight on Flash Mobs: Peaceable Assembly for Spontaneous Fun · · Score: 1

I've always thought the only way to get to the bottom of Area 51 (possible home of ufo's and alien bodies) would be for 100,000 people to show up and storm the chain link fences and go through the base and have a good look at what's going on. Of course, Area 51 is a restricted site with use of deadly force authorized, but are they really going to "off" 100,000 people in one night? Politically not possible... The only down side could be that the mob destroys valuable research projects or leaks national secrets about advanced weapons, so I might not like the aftermath if this every really happened, but it's something to think about during my bored moments...

  3. another story about deep sea monsters on Deep Sea Monster Baffles Scientists · · Score: 2, Interesting

anyone else remember reading about underwater microphones picking up a sound that is unidentified by marine biologists? Apparently the sound is so loud they had to check for geology explanations such as volcanoes or earthquakes. Marine biologists claim that the giant squid could not make the noise because it lacks a throat or something similar. So... they have a rare recording they think came from a living creature so large that no one knows what it is! Makes you think about what lurks in the deep ocean....

Parent has it right - article was wordy and boring. This wasn't writing, which should be reader friendly or at least keep the reader in mind once in awhile. This was "look at me, I'm a published writer. Aren't I clever bullshit". The only thing worse than this article would be this kind of writing in a long book. Yawn.

  7. a few points... on Starcraft · · Score: 1

These are a few thoughts that have taken me quite a long time to appreciate, maybe some of you will find some use or food for thought. 1) it's very, very easy to be a skeptic. almost brainless to say, "I don't believe it, show me more proof!" Think about the last time you crossed the street: you look both ways and start walking. But, you could stand there on the corner frozen stiff and demanding more proof before taking the first step. After all, maybe a really fast car is about to race down the road and kill you. This is completely silly thinking, which is my point. You reach a comfort level and step into the street. But skeptics, whether it be Bigfoot or UFO's, can always ask for more proof. It's the safe thing to do. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, I agree. But we need another one-liner to know when to stop doubting and allow for the possibility of something extraordinary being true. Right now, there is no easy rule for this, we all just stand with hands on our hips asking for proof. Some skeptics won't believe until a UFO lands on THEIR front lawn and rings THEIR doorbell. Hey, if it happens to their neighbor, they can always ask for 10 types of proof, it's the safe way to play it. But not always correct! Just because it didn't happen to you, doesn't always mean it didn't happen at all. 2) Science is really ass-backwards about these "fringe" topics. Most scientists care about their reputations and getting published more than doing really ground-breaking research. Furthermore, any scientist who dares to even slightly investigate these topics faces brutal ridicule from their peers, who only care about their rep and getting themselves published. This causes a vicious circle because we all parrot the phrase "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof" but anyone who tries to gather proof is brutalized and thought a fool. Nice loophole, did Congress & lawyers invent this bizarre system?? Be a skeptic, just don't be a lazy, do-nothing skeptic who knows topic 'X' is a fraud, even if they've never looked into themselves. In summary, the best thing that could possibly happen is for the scientifically rigorous doubters to stop bad-mouthing their peers, roll up their sleeves, and do their own unbiased research, with no regard for success or failure. Until the scientific community grows up a bit, I doubt it will happen and we are all the worse off for it.

For everyone who claims that we should not use technology to fight our wars, I have one simple question: ARE YOU VOLUNTEERING TO FIGHT OUR NEXT WAR?? I read the posts about "courage from a distance" and so on... Are you volunteering to man a foxhole?? I've been in the military and have a pretty good idea what war would be like. Massive war against Russia would be a nightmare. Now imagine war against China, out-numbered ten to one. Are you still against robot military vehicles? I'd give my foxhole to a decent robot anyday. I'll watch the Chinese human wave attack on tv and press a few buttons any time.

  10. HP Pavilion rotten PC on Fiorina Says HP May Get Out Of The PC Business · · Score: 1

HP should get out of the PC business. Hands down the worst PC I ever worked on was a Pavilion 7170. Granted it was ancient, but it had a daughter board that blocked the RAM memory, and I had to unplug all PCI/ISA cards to remove the daughter board before adding memory. Damn near had to strip it bare, all for a RAM upgrade. Thanks HP! I'll take a Dell anyday over HP.
