  1. Re:Scart lead on Adam Bresson Demonstrates Fair Use at DefCon · · Score: 1

Oh don't they have scarts in the US? Sorry I didn't realise they were only European. Figured they were pretty much universal. So what do you use over there? Are you still on RF leads?

  2. Scart lead on Adam Bresson Demonstrates Fair Use at DefCon · · Score: 1

Can't you just use a long scart lead? Never done it myself but I've been told (several times) that if you connect two VCRs using a 10m+ scart lead then the video/audio signal is strong enough to get through but the macrovision part gets lost on the way.

Allow me to correct myself. The warchalking web site is still being maintained, once you click through to the second page.

  4. Warchalking on Wireless Clouds for Good and Ill · · Score: 3, Informative

The BBC had a good story last week about warchalking which is a grass-roots effort to track down wireless networks so anyone can use them. Unfortunately the warchalking web site is no longer being updated because the owner, Matt Jones, wants to sell the domain and hand the project over to someone else.

  5. Needn't be as much as $200 on Feds to Require Digital Receivers In All New TVs? · · Score: 2, Informative

The $200 extra per TV seems a bit steep.

Here in the UK you can get a set-top terrestrial digital receiver for £99 with no subscription charges. That gives us a rough idea of production costs, but compare similarly-featured analogue TVs to digital TVs and there's a couple of hundred quid difference.

It seems that the cost of "going digital" is being kept artificially high by TV manufacturers.

On a similar subject, the UK government wants to switch off analogue broadcasts by 2010. Many people think this is unrealistic because digital take-up has been slow and TV manufacturers aren't doing anything to help, especially with regard to low-income homes. You can get a decent-sized analogue TV for less than £200 but you're looking at almost three times as much to get a basic digital set.

  6. All-in-one systems on Moxi Functions In Charter Set-top Box Next Year · · Score: 3, Interesting
I like the idea of merging the set-top box with a DVR using normal cable tv or satellite. A good combination.
Here in the UK the main satellite provider, Sky, has a normal digibox but also an enhanced system called Sky Plus that is a combo digibox and PVR. There's no MP3 or DVD support but it does allow you to record one satellite channel while watching another. It's been around since last September. I've had one for most of this year and it's an awesome piece of kit, despite a few technical problems along the way. The box itself costs £300 and there's a £10 monthly subscription.
  7. Sacked because of erroneous censorware logs? on All Sourceforge.net Being Blocked by SmartFilter · · Score: 1

I wonder if anyone's ever been sacked because of erroneous censorware logs? (Or ever will be sacked...)

Suppose someone visits SF.net every day while at work, say in their lunch break or after hours. This would show up in the SmartFilter logs as the person visiting an mp3 site. Once the boss decides to make an example and sack them, what chance have they got of arguing that the site's legit and it is in fact SmartFilter that's wrong?

Take it a step further: Suppose someone visits a site about children's books that has incorrectly been listed as a child porn site. Their boss spots this in the logs and calls the cops. The investigation would presumably draw a blank but still, the harm is done to the person's reputation. No smoke without fire...

  8. Real-time video recording on A Drive With The Works: DVD-[R,RW] And CD-[R,RW] · · Score: 1

I'm just waiting for the first drive that will allow real-time video/audio recording, so I can keep full quality digital copies of TV shows. There are stand-alones that can do it for a few thousand dollars, but I expect it will be a while until we can get internal drives that do it at a reasonable domestic price.

  9. Not a success yet on Is Extinction Only Temporary? · · Score: 1
    From the intro:
The new guar, 'Noah,' is due to be born next month -- in other words, the project is a success.
I don't think people should be so quick to say the project has been a success. The animal isn't even born yet. When it has been born, shown to be a perfect clone, lived a normal life and died, the project will have been a success. Not before.

The aim of the project is to create a perfect reproduction, not just a creature similar to one that lived before.

People still talk about Dolly as being a successful cloning, even with the ageing abnormalities. How can a true clone be different in such a major way?
