Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed and supervised the construction of the Great Western Railway (including locomotives and designing the buildings). This is why the ship was called "The Great Eastern". The GWR was his first railway and the The Great Eastern, his first ship. His range as an engineer cannot be understated.

The thing is that he tended to run the projects himself, including getting funding. The strain was immense, solving technical issues, managing the projects as well as the finance.

First of all, whts the big deal over Bluetooth? We have been hearing more about it dying than the "BSD" troll. Bluetooth allows multiple devices to connect up and allows recognition of capabilities.

Simple inductive loop systems were deployed many years ago for places like art galleries and museums. It works, but needs a bit of power. If the transmiter is static, no problem. Maybe the power thing is solved now, but Bluetooth is for a lot more than headsets.

Yes, that is what I mean about the loop-device. However, you would probably find it easier to load everything into RAM loop devices than leave part on flash. Remember, it won't be much - there are single floppy (i.e. >= 1.44MB) based distros out there.

  13. Re:A whole OS in BIOS, Flash? on Phoenix's BIOS Roadmap · · Score: 1

The issue is that the bios often includes chipset configuration. You would have to duplicate these setups before booting. Normally you would want to run your image in RAM (much faster), so you would decompress the system image from flash. Linux likes to have hard disks but again, you run a loop device if you want.

Plenty of machines can boot off a Lan, often this capability is built into a Lan adapter for PCs. However it always has to be specifically enabled and is relatively easy to lock down.

I'm on a freelance gig at a major bank (somewhat bigger than CSFB). It has outsourced and found problems. Now the idea is not to place the company's crown jewels on someone else's plate, but rather to extract non-core activities only (aka Smartsourceing).

It comes down to what you say and your security argument is a good one for this type of person (although personally I disagree). I prefer 'business security'.

You draw a line between your customer and the process that generates revenue. Everything on that line you should have directly under your control. If it can't be 100% (i.e., hardware support), then you must buy in redundancy.

The other side of this is that for Dell, this is a USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Dell corporate support now seems more attractive than one that is outsourced. Pitty it isn't the Inspirons as well. We have often used high end Inspirons instead of Latitudes although Dell describe it as a consumer model.

  17. Source base not significantly compromised on Microsoft Security Whitepaper · · Score: 1

If the Win2K/XP code base had been compromised fully, I'm fully sure that the code would have spread. It didn't. However the suggestion that the crackers had commit access is what is really scarey. In the case of Digital, they had to review their entire O/S source code. Remember the attempt to manipulate Bitkeeper with a change to the Linux kernel. Even though there are a lot more eyes on the code, it *could* have been a serious problem.

Each open mod has to be separately processed during metamod - however I don't believe that upping the limit to 10 or 20 would be that much of a deal. The change wouldn't be too difficult if it applied to everything, bit more so for interviews only, I guess. In any case it comes down to CmdrTaco to decide whether he wants it.

It is interesting that RH stress that this product isn't upgradable to Enterprise Linux although the RPMs are similar. However if I can be sure that something working on it will work on RHEL then this could be a step in the right direction.
