  1. Summary on The Year 2004 in Microprocessors · · Score: 3, Funny

    Quick summary for slashdot's readers:
1.AMD rocks (generally good, til their CPU prices are lower Intel's and we can overclock cheap Athlons to save some $$$)

    2. Intel sucks (Pentium IV = really bad, PentiumM = good but pricy, but we still hate intel today, because they are evil)

    3. IBM rocks (good boys, cause they support Linux and can beat SCO's ass)

    4. There are some companies in a world but we don't give a shit until Linux can run on their processors.

  2. Scientists are big kids on Caltech and JPL Build 50ft Robot · · Score: 1

They'd managed to build 50ft rose-robot just for stupid parade and after that NASA tell us they can't afford a new safe space shuttle?!
    Oh, please!!
Next time they will build some flying reindeer-robots for Santa or walking apple-pie-robots for Mothers Day!!
    Nice budget planning!

  3. I’m really disappointed! on Caltech and JPL Build 50ft Robot · · Score: 2, Funny

unfortunately it will be made entirely of flowers and will not attempt to enslave the crowd. However, they have mounted a camera to it, which will allow you to view the parade from the top of their creation.

    Just another damn peaceful robot!
But but they still can at least mount an additional 100mW green laser and try to blind nearby flying airplanes!

  5. Firefox is safe now. on Microsoft Not Worried about FireFox · · Score: 4, Funny

Until they have ANY kind of ActiveX enabled by default for all sites FireFox is safe.

What MS can do quickly is to release quick patch via windowsupdate which will disable all ActiveX by default and allow it only from trusted (whitelisted) sites with a BIG HUGE WARNING like this:

"I'm a stupid fucking idiot and allow this binary to run without any restriction on my computer.", type: "YES I AM",
next window: "I do understand what this ActiveX can delete all information, be a virus or spyware and I'm brave enough to Allow This"

Just like in Windows2003 default IE enhanced security configuration but more user friendly :)

  6. My ideas on Top Ten Advances in 2004 · · Score: 1

What humanity really need is a breakthrough in an effective source of clean energy. If all nations will get free and cheap energy it will solve huge number of a political and social problems in a world. No more oil wars, cheap transportation and so on. And a biology of cause. I am just wondering how much it could bring to the world if Bush spend all Iraq campaign money for biology researches? Cure for cancer or HIV? Next generations of antibiotics which will kill only specific viruses? Let's try someday to spend more money on fundamental researches, not war or political games and see what we will get.

  7. Not yet on Think Secret Predicts Sub-$500 Headless Mac · · Score: 1

Sorry, but in a corporate environment you just can't replace Wintel PC's with Mac right now. Why?

    * Group policy * - centralized security distribution point and software installation.

How much time it will take to replace a web proxy server settings on a 1000 Mac's without group policy?

How do you change network drive mappings from main server to backup on a user computers without GPO?

Try to run gpedit.msc and look how many settings you can change from a group policy in AD.
Apple need truly integrate OSX with Active Directory or offer some replacement.

Sure no viruses/spyware is a huge plus, but without centralized management Macs are not ready for wide adaptation.

It took me several hours to implement very simple ip policy routing in linux, and it is still looks like more a hack..i did the same task on cisco router in 10 minutes.
Setting traffic shapers, queue priorities and so on just a matter of minutes. And you have more networking features which linux have not got yet even with the cheap 500$ used 1005 cisco router.

However, sometimes there are nasty bugs in cisco's IOS, but you can almost avoid it by using latest stable IOS release.
