for *mass* production. Fuel cell tech is already in prototype production.

AMAF, in one of the magazines I subscribe to, there is an ad for a home power system based fuel cell technology. I forget - would have to go look it up - what the cost is, but I remember it's expensive; also that it runs on natgas. FC is already *here*; it's just a matter of bringing the costs down.

More than peanuts for R&D there would help, tho, certainly!

    Yep!

Instead of researching how we could be energy dependant, we've spent entirely too much damned time defending the status quo....meaning the companies which already supply our energy needs...

But in that, I think eventually the market will change things. It already is to some extent - in solar and fuel cell technologies. Question is: Will it be soon enough?

    1.2 billion was chump change.

I know that it simply doesn't work well when applied to one's own life - you can (and sometimes have to) think for the short term, but without long term thinking, you aren't likely to get out of the rut you're in that led to the short term problem in the first place....

I think about that one a lot...and if I find a solution, I'm going to patent it, and that will take care of my long term problems ;-) ;-)

Interesting thing is that the computers these are in are only on about 2-3 hours per day. Hmm.

What I found fascinating about these drives - and still do - is all the CRC errors I see while booting Mandrake Linux.....and while the (replaced) drives operate correctly, I don't see those errors on any other drives, not even that old 2.5G Quantum bigfoot with stiction problems I have.

Having had some experience along that line myself, I'd also say that part of the problem was mishandling of the vehicles. My experience was in grain truck/tractor repair, but we replaced a lot of tires that were way overworn from obvious bad handling (example: cutting tight turns at highway speeds with a full 20t+ load can produce massive outer tire wear including sidewall seperation).
I don't know how that applies to SUVs/Firestone, but I would be willing to bet some of it does, given how I've seen people driving those things on the roads. They think they're driving friccin' Ferraris.

I do know that no Firestone tire I've ever had on any heavy vehicle I've ever driven has caused problems. OTOH, Ford has *always* had funky suspensions (remember the IBeam suspensions? what a PITA!)

    Would welcome comments.
