Interestingly enough, if you go to your contract agency and ask for more money or benifits, they shrug their shoulders and go "Well, we'll see if we can get more money out of HP, but that's never happened."
The fact is you're not working for Manpower. That's just on paper. For all intents and purposes you're working for HP, you're just not given any of the benifits of a regular employee.
If you're a US citizen, don't worry about the draft.
The commanders of the military doesn't want you if you're not willing. The people you work with in the military don't want you if you're not willing.
These aren't the days where you can hand someone a uniform and a rifle and have an effective fighting force. Your responsibilites are much greater when entering the military these days, and everyone is *busy*. They don't have time to check to make sure you're doing your job. Or to do your job for you.
Also, having someone in uniform who doesn't want to be there will get people killed. This is why they're not making a big deal over desertions anymore.
Of course, in countries where they still think "More manpower=better", you're screwed.
I'm using this as a way to migrate away from Promise to, well, anything. I'll probably get the 3ware card, but I'd really perfer to have software RAID.
IPv6 allows you to have a minimum of 2^64 addresses. You would never have to pay for extra IP addresses. (unless you want to run multiple networks or something)
"Wow! Now that we've completely converted our ISP to IPv6, we can stop charging our customers for IP addresses and loose buckets of money!"
When I got out of the military in 1998 I bought my Mom a replacement computer for her 286.
I booted it up to get the files off of it, and was very surprised at how reponsive it was. 16 Mhz and I was flying though menus, and bringing up Wordperfect in seconds.
Now it's the same thing. She's still using the same computer from 1998, and I figure it's time for a replacement. I decided against it when I went home for Christmas and cleaned it out and patched it up. Windows 98 was flying. The thing could use some more memory, but other than that it worked great.
So I set up a script to backup all her files to a zip disk and told her to call me when the PC dies.
When people talk about the "Arrogant Americans", do you realize that telling other people that they're "wrong" for their choice in leaders is part of that?
To all those from Australia, sorry about that. Our crazy policial types are few, but they're really loud.
How are those Opterons working under Linux? I have a friend who turns his nose up at anything that isn't Intel. Says that if you want to get anything from AMD running with linux you always end up having to apply patches and special tweaks.
I think that article was in Scientific American, and the machines were supposed to recognise tones at a certain frequency.
The problem was, that the experiment was set up too cleanly. Put the resulting machines in a different temperature enviroment, or change their voltage slightly, and they'd stop working.
Evolutionary algorithms work best in a more chaotic enviroment.
I think the purpose of the experiment was to get code that was better than the best human programming. They got it, sort of.
Find an "undelete function" that will recover your data when a user "accidentally" runs a SQL package against the wrong data.
Shrug. I keep a nightly SQL dump on my RAID. That's not what the undelete function is for. You said "When a user accidentally deletes a file." Not "When a user totally screws up and pillages the system."
Or one that will roll back to a version from 3 days ago when a (l)user in your company realizes that someone else got rid of a chapter that took 3 weeks to write.
And they don't have a local copy ANYWHERE? I find that scenerio to be improbable.
As for your diaster recovery / business continuity preparedness (and your assumed desire for continued employment), you might want to take a DR class.
Although I appreciate that you think I'm employeed as an admin, these are just my home machines and my commercial website.
I work as a systems operator. And I have to deal with admins who think the tape backup is actually reliable. As the time windows come and go, it usually takes several tries (weeks) to get things back to the way they are.
A backup is not a replacement for users handling their own data in a good manner. I'd hate to be the guy running around every day trying to fix someone else's screwup.
Are there DR classes that don't require you to have expensive backup solutions?
Your scenerio is only true if people are going into town JUST to do groceries. From what I remember of rural living, you go to town to do several things at once, since it's such a long drive.
These other things you have to go to town for!
Hey, while you're there, do your groceries too! Having a truck deliver your groceries at that point is a WASTE of gas, not a savings!
Biodiesel from yellow grease is closer to being cost-competitive with petroleum diesel than is biodiesel from soybean oil, but the available supply of yellow grease will probably limit its use for biodiesel production to 100 million gallons per year.
Oh bravo. Even with your cheaper oils, we're ALMOST cost competitive with diesel.
And what do you think will happen to the price of yellow grease as demand goes up?
Also, I thought you could just pour bio-diesel into a regular car and use it. Why would the gas station sell it at a cheaper price when it's a drop-in replacement?
Hm, the only way that would work is if there's a "Grocery delivery day" once a week where people who live near each other get their bulk items delivered by truck.
The energy savings of this are still negated when you have to drive to town to do other stuff anyway.
I'd have to agree. People who say "Just walk away", where have you BEEN in the past few years?
It took me months to get my crappy contract position. The job market is looking better now, time to clean up the ol' resume.
Where did you get that information? Is it verifiable?
You get real tired of carrying the real employees who earn twice as much in SALARY, real quick.
Then they also get benefits and paid vacation time.
That's because they figure you're an employee. A cheap employee without any benefits.
Interestingly enough, if you go to your contract agency and ask for more money or benifits, they shrug their shoulders and go "Well, we'll see if we can get more money out of HP, but that's never happened."

(sigh) Interested.
Actually, I'd be very interesting in what your 40 page cookbook is called.
Sorry, your "Just Kidding!" line dosn't cut it.
Just admit you're a robot and your life should go much smoother from now on.
And not an amusing robot like Bender, or HAL.
If you're a US citizen, don't worry about the draft.

My SX-150 SATA RAID just went corrupt on me.
I'm using this as a way to migrate away from Promise to, well, anything. I'll probably get the 3ware card, but I'd really perfer to have software RAID.
You went to college, put up something that moves. Sheesh.
Cheap desk fan placed in the sensor's viewing area, maybe one of those "Drinking cup birds", pet ferret. Whatever.
"Wow! Now that we've completely converted our ISP to IPv6, we can stop charging our customers for IP addresses and loose buckets of money!"
Did you send the programmer a note?
Ok, so create a daemon that has error checking up the wazzo.
Any centalized method should have that, plus strict usage methods.
Small variations at the beginning of the universe become large differences later on.
(blink)
You work in enviroments that I've only heard of in legends.
I work in places where "The tapes are going bad, and they're expensive to replace, and the tape drive is years out of warranty, fire the operator!"
Man, a proper DR budget. If they could afford that, they could afford to hire people instead of hacking their budget and getting temps/contractors.
Ah well. I've got to get back to working on my local RAID array. The array went corrupt, and I'm hoping upgrading to the 2.6 kernel will help.

"You?"
You mean you're not Australian?

You know, jobs in the science would really open up if we started burning heretics again.
#1 Skill for a successful career in science: Try not to look flammable.

I don't know about you, but all my data will be fine when my building goes up in flames.
Rsynced to a remote RAID device. Accidentally delete a file? I suppose setting up an undelete function would work.
And as for stealing my boxes. Get a guard dog already.
