I know this is slightly OT, but forks of Falcon's Eye - Vulture's Eye and Vulture's Claw (Nethack and Slash'Em, respectively) are finally available for OS X. For anyone who didn't like the QT version, or couldn't get the terminal version to compile or don't have classic, this rocks.
One of the nicest RPGs is finally running on the mac, and is rock-stable! On to YASD!
Before you mod this down, I'd like you to know I have my Powerbook on a table, AND I use pencil and paper to write down my Inventory when I die - cheating as much as I can.
All the hallmarks of tabletop D&D'ing. Don't judge me.
That's why I like to buy DVDs of my favorite bands performing "live" in my living room.
I am interested in playing your 'living room' venue, but I have a few questions. What capacity is it? Does the band provide the DVD, or is the recording done 'in house'?
Are food and drink provided in the dressing room, or trailer?
What are your preferred set times, and who do I need to send the stage plot to?
Thanks for your attention,
teamhasnoi - The Schmoejoes
It seems that she is really selling exclusitivity (is that a word?) in the sense that her @home shows are all sold out. Obviously, you can't sell out a stream (within hardware limitations), but she is also peddling 10 seats at the physical location.
This twist is new enough that it's going to get her some eyeballs, and some fans - who will hopefully go on to buy the physical merch, such as CDs, tshirts and the like...or better yet, tell their pals.
I can't see this working for everyone - she's really going at it with a show every day. She also is good, which (depending on your tastes, and where you look) is hard to find. I found her to be like something I'd hear on American Idol, but YMMV.
The genius of this is that the whole thing is on her terms, which for a musician/band playing out is rare. Start times are set by the venue, pay is still what it was in the mid-70's (thanks in large part to crappy bands that will play for free, and easily-awed patrons, "Ohhh! It's Brown-Eye Girl!"), and travel, especially in Minnesota, is often a bitch.
I've thought of doing a live stream, but there's only so many hours in a day - I've got enough to do right now with recording, pre-production, and writing. Hell, it's a wonder I can manage to get any show in. Perhaps I'll stop posting to/. for a week, and really get some stuff done...
Anyone recall the removal of the abillity to stream your library over the net? Made it a real pain in the ass to listen to stuff from home on your work computer. (I'm the admin, so I yell at myself daily for doing it, thanks.)
Of course, 3rd party stuff that replaced the functionality quickly surfaced, but it all feels very hacky.
On the other side of the coin, there's the dreaded feature bloat. Take Adobe's Acrobat for instance - every new version has come with extra features, and exponentially longer start times. Ugh.
So many reasons not to upgrade. If you have a computer used for recording, you quickly learn to never fix what ain't broke. I am one of the few using SP2 successfully with my audio hardware, which is no longer being made. Of course, Windows doesn't make things any easier to back out of an upgrade.
Mac = rename old version, test new, toss new.
Windows = huh? Some files could not be removed? Why doesn't this work anymore? I uninstalled it. Aw, hell. System restore...damnit! Time to nuke, and reinstall. Repeat. Oh, no...
Some nerds have been on WOW all night and haven't heard this. Thankfully, they're smart and will catch on quick - we'll probably only have to dupe this story once.
Will those you allow to hold office destroy your freedom before you can take back your country?
How many Amendments to the Consitution have not been ignored in the last 6 years?
Name three things that this Administration has done that didn't do exactly opposite of what they were called!
For extra credit: Which hurts more - being shot in the face by Cheney, knowing that you've just been sold down the river, McCarthy-style...or that in some windowless cube farm, someone is being paid by your taxes to determine if your Slash-o-dot post is a threat to this country?
For the win: What is the name of my Investigating Agent?
Answer quick, they're at the door - I want to surprise them.
You sure do like to put words in the mouths of those you disagree with, don't you? It's quite apparent that you are the wet dream of this administration. If you're on the radar, it's for your weak minded devotion to whatever BS Scott McClellan craps out for the week.
I'm sure your armband is in the mail.
Maybe you should seek spiritual guidance for your anger issues. I hear Al-Qaeda's hiring.
Thanks for spelling it out for me. I had an unreasonable fear of being sent to Gitmo; you have cleared my mind. ahhh.
You don't find anything wrong with all this Gitmo biz? - no oversight, proven torture, and no repercussions? You're just what this country needs - another apologist.
Never thought I was on the 'radar'; people like you should be.
BTW, we were talking about *your Mom*. Inabillity to grasp concepts and utillize short-term memory is a sure sign of chronic mental mastubation. You may want to have that checked.
does anyone complain about metered electricity bills?
Hey, I don't pay extra for *good* electricity. I don't have to subscribe to 'freezer service'. I pay for what I use.
In my ISP's case I pay, even when I don't use. That's fine. Any time something like this comes up, it equals a bigger bill for me, with no difference in service. Much like Business DSL and Res. DSL. No difference in speed, quality, or service, just more $$$ because 'Well, you're a business.'
It will just cost more. Just like every other thing that's gone to that model. MS subscriptions anyone?
A box of speakers for Three HUNDRED fifty dollars.
A leather ENVELOPE for ONE HUNDRED dollars.
Mac Minis for one hundred extra bucks, and a neutered video card.
This is just CRAP. Why was there even a show? This stuff should just appear on the Apple store, not have a friggin' party.
Ugh. Is this what the Intel Transition is bringing me? Is Apple delirious?
Apple needs to leave the accessories market to the little companies and crappy eBay sellers, and stick to what it was good at.
Why did Steve even show for this one? Has he lost immunity to his own Reality Distortion Field?
This is truly disappointing - I expect weak crap like this from someone who's copying Apple, not Apple themselves.
I hope anyone who buys the iMoBviouslyaNiDiot box starves, because I really don't want that in the gene pool.
Before an Apple Zealot mods this down, please note. I have more Macs than you.
There are millions of bands out there that allow you to download full songs that are also available on CD. Try GarageBand for one place. Hell, even iTunes allows you to do it.
Distributing music on the web for free, and selling it at stores? Both of my old bands did it, my new band will do it. My old bandmate is doing it. A pal who just got signed is doing it.
I'm sure the RIAA and the many companies it represents are gleefully rubbing their hands together at your total generalization, and hoping that the 'free music online = illegal' meme takes hold. Musicians who have to distribute their own music hate it, and those who would love to lobby those independents out of existence love that doublespeak.
As far as intent, I've met alot of people who have no clue what exactly copyright is, so it wouldn't surprise me that they didn't indend to infringe. Then again, who are we all kidding? What college student hasn't heard the word 'Napster'?
It also wouldn't surprise me if the RIAA claimed infringement on works that weren't theirs, as the've done in the past.
All that said, words are important - use them carefully.
I think 'working with' Warner/Chappel is making a deal with the devil. Their C&D and apology are worthless, as they do NOT own the rights to all lyrics.
I own all the lyrics to my songs, all the music The Schmoejoes play, and Warner/Chappel can't claim ownership.
Generalize much? I might as well say that any douche posting to/. at 10 pm on a Saturday is certainly a basement-dwelling virgin who hasn't showered in weeks, is very annoyed that his mom threw out his Dorkus the Warrior #1 with his Magic: The Lathering porn-themed cards, and kicking himself for using a superfluous 'it'in his post.
Can I hold your wallet chains and mini-buttons when you guys fight?:P
Even stuff like the Kinks and the Beatles were regarded as fluff in their day - the thing that will kill music is control of distribution, and patenting of production and arrangement (the RIAA is buying the legislation for one, and I seem to recall a recent/. story about patenting a story theme - if that's true, music arrangements and production styles will surely not be far behind. I've posted about it before, but I always sound like the musician's Stallman )
I'll be practicing with my band no sooner than tomorrow for my own rock show - played in front of tens of people. So can't we all just get along, and buy my t-shirts?;)
In response to your question: No. Nobody who's independent will be able to afford such a service, as the going rate is set by the giant focus-group labels.
You want to know how a song will go over? Play it in front of the bartender, his girlfriend, and your roommate like the rest of us.
If the bartender leaves, you might want to work on it some more.

I think that's the number one reason to halt all this illegal wiretapping!
Oh, and maybe the 4th amendment - it seems we're having time-out issues with that as well.
I'm confused. Who will clean my Walmart now?
Perhaps the abillity to obliterate any chance of a nerd getting laid? I know that I'd be sold for sure!
I am interested in playing your 'living room' venue, but I have a few questions. What capacity is it? Does the band provide the DVD, or is the recording done 'in house'?

Yeah, your Mom hasn't been shipped off to Gitmo. But she *could*. So could you, so could I.
I don't need proof that this is unacceptable.

At least for the next ten years, as MS is always that far behind copying Apple.
I'm practicing giving my walls the finger right now.
And I will continue to do so.

I own all the lyrics to my songs, all the music The Schmoejoes play, and Warner/Chappel can't claim ownership.
That goes to here.
Serves a blank page, however - I notice that the favicon still loads. Odd.
I've also noticed that Safari will *not* load the rollover for the 'links' button. Works in every other browser.
Anyone know why?
This app/widget is great, and I highly recommend grabbing it from the Rapidshare links further down. (or me.)
This widget is infringing on copyright about as much as you are if you view a site with lyrics.
I recommend sharing this app as much as possible, and making it available as much as you can. (Fully allowed by his license)
pearLyrics
I'm hosting this for the non-infringing use of figuring out what *my* lyrics are. Good luck.
Check it out it I speak the truth.
It's not all crap.
Ha. Except for this.
