Woohoo. Someone at the overblown DHS said something. Read this posters linked article.
Just because some twat at DHS says what we want to hear, does not mean the bought and paid for Bush Admin is not going to bend you over the first chance they get.
All campaign finance is stopped.
Each candidate is given a set sum, paid for by taxes.
No outside money, including the candiate's, is allowed.
We then have a situation where Money==Freer Speech.
Other than those with money and a political agenda complaining loudest, where's the problem?
This insures that everyone pays for a FAIR political process, that rich psychopaths don't have a free pass.
We still have individuals and groups taking out ads, saying what they want to say on blogs, and such - but this must be paid for by them.
No more hundred million dollar warchests. No more pollys bought and paid for by special interests. The Repubs, the Demos, the Greens, Libs, Socalists, and whoever else makes the 'final round' gets the same $$$.
Any abuse, and the candidate is removed from play or penalized votes (to keep the free facetime of the news at bay - otherwise, candidates would invent scandal to be on TV 24/7 - I'm talking to you, Rove).
You describe allofmp3.com, but you're linking to all*off*mp3.com. Totally different. All*off*mp3 is a paid linkfarm to different p2p apps. You use this service and you won't even have a 'grey' market defense.
You'd be downloading from regular sources, using software that's already given away, and findable with google. At least the Russian mob-run allofmp3.com provides a real service.
Don't know if it's a typo or what, but it's very misleading.
Those who can are taking everything, even stuff that is worthless in their present situation. The people stealing food are like the independent artist copyrighting a work created by them - they're doing it to feed themselves and their families.
People who are stealing televisions and other 'luxury items' aren't thinking of anyone but themselves, like media companies that encourage congresswhores to extend copyright again and again.
They're increasing the damage that is there (hurricane or Sonny Bono Act) for their own selfish wants, while passing the cost on to everyone (insurance costs or the good of public domain.)
It's the same mindset - humanity at its worst. One takes advantage of lax law enforcement, the other takes advantage of public apathy.
(Before you post screaming, 'get some priorities' and 'I can't believe you compared the tragedy of 9/11 - Katrina - kids with cancer to copyright', please get a grip. This is/. - Remember *IAAs = New Orleans Looters. In fact, I've changed my sig so you can be more outraged.)
Funny, all the people I know with Windows boxes have had them in 'the shop' countless times to be cleaned of spyware and the like, have had to spend money on more RAM so they'll run at a resonable pace while loaded down with spyware, and have had to buy antivirus, a firewall, spyware removers, and subscriptions to those services.
All while I work happily away on my Macs, enjoying transparent computing.
I don't have to bring the Mac in to remove whatever, install anti-whatever, purchase subscriptions to anti-whatever, and don't have to deal with whatever filled email. What a huge time-saver.
However, I have switched many of my friends to Apple, making sure they knew how difficult it would be to unlearn what they already thought about computers. Most of them don't get very far in learning.
Do these friends ride the short bus to school by chance?
It is impossible to fathom how someone smart enough to become 'productive' on Windows couldn't manage to make the great leap of logic to a consistent hardware/software solution.
Of course, your friends could be chimps or Jack Russel Terriers, in which case congratulations are in order! I can't even get my dog to shake, much less use Powerpoint.
I am always hollering about how everything 'for our own good' will be misused eventually (sooner than later, unfortunately.) and turned into 'wow! Look at all the money I found in my bank account! Who are you little people, again?'
I'm rather interested in where the 'tipping point' is going to be.
How about one that has a way to dump my old Hi-8 footage into it?
I've been looking for one with RCA or SVideo in, but can't find one anywhere. I didn't want to have to buy a eyeTV or some separate deal for something I expect to use once. Any suggestions?
Today is the day that you should brave the yellow face, go upstairs and thank your mom for letting you turn the basement into a Nethack dungeon.
Not posting in the typical smarmy, "I told you so" Slashdot fashion. You never told me so. You just say it now to look 'visionary'.
Firefox is going to have bugs, it's going to break, it's going to suck sometimes. The difference between it and IE is that the Firefox devs actually *care*.
So put on a less dirty shirt, douse yourself with some of that Stetson cologne you got for Christmas about ten years ago, pick some dandelions and go tell your mom 'Happy Mother's Day'.
You'd think the higher priced cars are the ones with better quality. Its quite funny to see Jaguar, Land rover, and porsche at the bottom of list below hyundia and Daewo.
One question. Which ones are more fun to drive?
And please don't bring up Dell's quality control. I'm on my 3rd drum assembly in 3 weeks for a 3100cn color laser printer, made by Dell. My boss bought it because it was cheap. I've wasted the savings in time trying to get it to work right, and waiting for replacement parts.
Do your research.. look up the parts.. give yourself a $1300 budget.. you'd be surprised.. shit, pricewatch.com could give you a hell of a deal with some pretty damn good parts..
If you want to buy on price alone, then more power to you. I'll buy the stuff that doesn't need constant maintenance, lasts longer, and holds it's resale value.
Why would you bother trying to talk someone out of something they like? I don't need 'saving'. Are you upset that you can't afford one? Trying to reconcile your decision?
Try it. You'll like it. You know you will. It's just like crack. Oh so delicious crack.
someone answer me the question, what exactly do you BUY for $1300 thats actually worth it?? what can you POSSIBLY do that you CANNOT do on a regular PC for $1300 ?? NOTHING.. NOT A FUCKING THING AND YOU KNOW IT!!!
I paid $2400 for a Powerbook a year ago, and you know what I got that I can't get on any PC?
I enjoy using a computer again. A bargain.
i'm tired of fucking dumb ass macs.. i dont care how good they are, i'm not paying $1300 for a Mac that isn't even CLOSE to their higher end models..
You probably think that the 1000 pc. socket set at Walmart is fantastic. I mean, look how many sockets you get!
In fact, several of these have been up for a couple of weeks.
Has anyone else noticed that/. auto-links things now? Here's a test : http://dupedupedupe.net/
Widgets are already suffering from size bloat. Look at this one
I guess it can be split apart, but damn! If that's how big it is, I'm not going to bother.
Now put the info in the size that MenuMetersuses (or slightly bigger), and I'd be far more likely to use it.
I understand that these should be big enough to grab your attention, but not giant and ballooned like a two week corpse.
It seems that most of the 3rd party widgets all need to go on a diet. I've already grabbed some and shrunk them down to a size more befitting of a PB screen - but save me the trouble, already.
I'm afraid I don't have time to prove you wrong, or learn programming. I'm too busy not battling viruses, trojans and spyware, and not waiting for a dog to deliver search results when he's done licking his own balls.
Wow. Come to think of it, I have tons of time! I think I'll learn how to program!
I think they've been waiting for Automator and Spotlight, which will herald a new era of beautiful dupe-free Slashdot, or the most terrible rain-of-dupes the world has ever seen.
Just because some twat at DHS says what we want to hear, does not mean the bought and paid for Bush Admin is not going to bend you over the first chance they get.

So tear this a new one /.ers....
Just wanted to make sure that no /.ers were harmed in the making of your post. :)

Not that I needed another example.
I should hire one to tell people I'm funny.
That might be more than I can swing.

Quality over quantity, sweet teats.
Um, yeah. When's that starting again?
Actions always speak louder than words, in both cases.

Why develop something as impressive as Quartz 2D Extreme and then leave it turned off by default? My inquiries to Apple have gone unanswered, so I can only speculate about the reasoning behind this decision. My best guess is that all of the bugs could not be excised from Q2DE in time for Tiger's launch date, and that it will be enabled by default in a subsequent update--perhaps as early as version 10.4.1."
I told you so.
Wow. Come to think of it, I have tons of time! I think I'll learn how to program!
I quiver in anticipation.
