If I look at logs every other day? If I run Zone Alarm? Look at the screen with a magnifying glass? If I hang out on IRC and talk to script kiddies? An email to Steve Gibson? Call Encyclopedia Brown? Invite the Hardy Boys over (or Nancy Drew...grrrrr;)? Ask the kids? Call the cops weekly? Write my congressman? Watch Mystery Science Theatre 3000? Type 'Hacker +"My Computer"' in Google? Dust for prints? Listen to Prince? Buy a fedora? Tape the X-Files? Eat a unidentified mushroom? Hang out near the computer books at Barnes & Noble? Watch '20/20'? Puzzle over a "Where's Waldo" Sunday comic? Post to alt.are.you.hacking.me? Hide some X10 cameras in my floppy drive? Respond to "FIND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT ANYONE!!!!!!!" spam? Read the label? Check behind me occasionally? Smelling my shirt to see if it's clean? Submit an Ask Slashdot?
Sounds like I could have an 'ongoing investigation' for the rest of my life.
When I was a kid, Dragon's Lair was at pizza joint in a tourist town I visited every year. I got to play it once. One dollar went into that game and I never got past the first screen.
I wised up - spent all the rest of my (Mom's) money on Choose Your Own Adventure Books. Sure, one dollar and ninety-five cents was more than Dragon's Lair, but I got as many run throughs as I wanted, and Ma didn't have a problem with buying those.
And the graphics were kick-ass.
I still have a box full of those books, and they are *still* good for car rides.
It's happening. The RIAA tries to keep independent musicians from making money. Microsoft tries to keep other OSes from 'stealing' market share. The government tries to tax online merchants out of business so the big guys can swoop in with their troops of lawyers and accountants and put the nail in the coffin. It's everywhere. Money buys justice, business buys laws.
I thought Republicans were *for* business. I guess its just for the businesses that pay them.
Could you actually make a Beowulf cluster out of these? Seriously? I can imagine one, of course, but can you actually do it? And would one good laptop be better?
Our Prez and VP both have ties to oil companies (Bush Exploration, Arbusto, Harken, Haliburton), the prez's father sold weapons and trained the very guy we are(were) looking for, the prez's grandfather had dealings with the nazis. Conflict of interest runs in the family..
Don't forget about Venezuela, Russia, or any number of other places with large amounts of oil. Even if the middle east was nuked tomorrow, we'd only face an oil shortage from distribution problems, not from diminished oil availability.
I agree. We've got two+ experts in the White House, how could we have a shortage? We aren't going to nuke anything, we are just going to go in and 'help'. With that help will come a few select buisinesses that will set themselves up well.
Frankly, I don't need FUD, I need TUMS. The liberals don't have a monopoly on making fear, uncertainty and doubt.
Sure, nobody likes the fact that people are being killed and beaten, however those people are very far away, and the gas tank on Mrs. Johnson's SUV is very near and dear to her heart.
As far as attacking the rest of the oil producing countries go, we don't have a 'convincing/convienent' excuse. Yet.
I figure that things will happen roughly like this: War on Iraq after 'lame duck' session of Congress is over. Some homeland security stuff mixed in with some education reform (for the kids!/votes) pushed thru Congress, another smaller 'terrorist attack' somewhere visible, maybe on the other coast, war on random terrorist-producing(oil) country. More tax cuts for people who don't need them, maybe some more touchy-feely legislation, go and drill in Anwar, more homeland security powers and rights to seize and detain, and finish up with some more love-in legislation barely covering the dark amendments beneath. Just in time for 2004, and polls, and scared/delighted/one-issue voters!
Whee. I wish I didn't think these things. Cynical, paranoid, ignorant, or trolling, some AC will come along and call me all four.
If the guy is from Britain, he is considered a hacker. If he were from Iran, he would be considered a terrorist.
They should just scrap the term hacker and call him a terrorist, because thats what breaking into the US millitary is, terrorism.
Would breaking into British Military also be terrorism? How about Iraq?
There is a difference between breaking into a companies network out of curiosity and breaking into a millitary network. At worst, it could be considered an act of war from the country where the hacker originated against the country that was hacked. This would be bad for britain as they are totally dependant on America for support and are controlled by America's millitary policy.
Britian is dependent on the US? Tony Blair certainly is Bush's Yes Man, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are dependent on us, or controlled by our policy.
100 successful hacks is quite impressive, and it's good to see that America's war on terrorism is paying off and this man was caught before he could have caused serious damage to the western world.
Yes. The war on terrorism is paying off, just like the war on drugs. We prevented this guy from breaking into *every* military network, just like we've taught kids to 'Just Say No' and quelled the importation of millions of dollars of coke and dope.
Thank you Geoilrge Bush, and God Bless Amerika!
Yes, I know, IHBT,IHL,HAND - I just wanted to practice my italics and paragraph tags.
When someone can bust into ONE HUNDRED MILITARY SITES and only get caught on the 101st, it makes me really doubt the 'security' of our electronic voting systems which are:

Kinda makes you wonder if you really did/will vote, eh?
If this guy does get extradited to the US, I bet he'll be working for someone in a five-sided building real soon.
Exactly. I've rewritten plenty of Beatles songs, and so have everyone else. The thing is knowin' what to throw away, and knowin' what to keep. Cause every song's a winner, and every song's a loser, and the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.
Geez - we have a radio section that hasn't been used since the 29th of June - why not use that as a place to link(/.) musicians and bands sites? I'm grasping at straws here, but doesn't everyone on/. listen to music?
Why not use what we have here: 250,000 readers, 2 or 3 posters;) and many countries and genres represented.
We don't need to serve the mp3s themselves, just link to an exciting artist that isn't signed. (No new Madonna songs, IOW. She's already got enough exposure.)
Perhaps have an artist interview once a month or more), music software reviews(mp3 and recording), some sort of voting on a/. top ten, whatever.
As long as we don't have any mp3s here, there shouldn't be any bandwidth/legal problems.
Of course - the flag icon still isn't fixed (even after I sent one in) so maybe this will fall on deaf ears. (Pun intended.)
Don't worry. I'm sure you have a friend that will say, "Hey, that sounds just like Brown-Eyed Girl!"
In short, don't worry about it. Chances are (very good) that you will be ignored by any sort of music publisher. And someone always brings up the everything2 link, but that's just dumb. Pop Will Eat Itself kinda had some lead time on that.
Really, since everything is stolen or borrowed already, your objections to doing it are just an excuse. If you want to do it, DO IT. Write the music you want to hear, and you'll be original.
If you're worried about running over old ground, find someone to bounce ideas off of, but don't be afraid to say screw it and write the tune anyway. Shit, most songs that make it to radio are 3 chord wonders that start off quiet, get suddenly loud, have another soft part and ROK to the end.
Just don't do that.
Speaking of old Computer equipment...OT of course.

Does anyone have the windows software for the good ol' Northgate Omnikey? I had it, but now can't find it anywhere. I've seen the dos version, and know how to remap it manually, but damn that takes forever if you're doing a lot of remaps and macros.
The best keyboard in the world!
Back on topic... the pictures are great! They remind me of photographs of the old Volkswagen factory back in WW2, taken by a industrial photographer (whose name escapes me). Crystal clear, excellent composition, and they add an importance to the subject that would be lost if you were looking at a reel of tape, or a pile of fenders. I would love a hi-res collection of these!

Even if you are not a pothead (I'm retired:) this site has such cool solutions to growing ahem...*plants* indoors, you could easily spend a hour there. DISCLAIMER: Obviously you take your chances, so don't actually do it. I don't and don't know anyone who does. This is proof of concept only.:)
Don't be surprised when you're hungry after you visit.
In OS X you can hit CMD(Apple) H, which 'hides' most apps. Have a doc open in the back and you're all good. For added 'security', have another browser (IE) in the dock for when the boss wants you to look something up, or show you something.
You might also want to see how much other crap they own. There was a page I saw which listed all the companies, but I can't find the link right now..:(
While you are busy copy protecting your stable of has-beens, boy bands, and warmed over focus group music, I will be investigating the wonderful world of non-label bands.
For every over-produced single that your 'A&R' people put out there for the clueless masses, there are two *albums* by talented, REAL musicians who believe in what they do.
Sure, they don't have the marketing power that your big company has, but while you are lumbering around trying to pin the tail on the donkey, you will find that the party is over and you missed it.
I will continue to seek good music that I can legally download, make good music that others can legally download, and push good music that everyone can legally download.
There is plenty out there. It might not be as easy to find as your latest Clear Channel release, but it's there. You are over. Your time is done. You won't see me at the wake.
I'll be listening to music.
Sincerely,

If, in OS 9, you have a dialog box open and need to check a file name in a window behind it, you have to cancel out of the box. In os X or classic, you can just click on the window you want.
