Open-source software is supposed to simplify the programming of complex tasks. Why reinvent the wheel when you can leverage the technology of others? Unfortunately, white supremacist groups have taken this cue and are using sophisticated Internet gaming as a means of disseminating messages of hate. The latest trend involves perverting popular videogames that use an open-source code, transforming them into racist look-alike games.
The National Alliance released its first videogame, "Ethnic Cleansing," on Martin Luther King Jr's birthday this year. It costs $14.88 and can be downloaded from the Internet. National Alliance founder William Pierce said producing videogames is just another source medium.
"All videogames, or at least the ones I have seen tend to be, [sic] involve some combat of some sort. They tend to be violent action-oriented games. And 'Ethnic Cleansing' is like that too, but it is different, in that it tries to raise the racial consciousness of the player," Pierce said.
The game entices the player to become "more racially conscious," by starting a race war. It uses a first-person shooter perspective, like the game "Doom." The first level is filled with background images supporting "white power" and mocking African-Americans. When you shoot a dark-skinned character, the game makes a monkey noise. When you shoot Jewish characters, they say "Oy vey." You advance to the next level by killing a boss with a racially charged nickname. The second level involves traveling down into the New York City subway system, killing Hasidic Jews and Israeli Defense League characters. Players eventually end up in a face-to-face combat with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Open source opens the door
The Anti-Defamation League issued a report about games that, like "Ethnic Cleansing," manipulate the graphic look of popular games to spread messages of hate.
"The reason we were concerned about 'Ethnic Cleansing' is because some of the other games compared to it are simple. This is a detailed game," said ADL Internet researcher Brian Marcus. He said that so-called white-power groups find games that use an open-source code. "Ethnic Cleansing" uses a loose open-source agreement for the 3D rendering environment from Genesis 3D.
"They opened this up to the open-source community, saying that anyone can use these tools and that they had a very basic license agreement. The license agreement was as long as you show our logo, you can use this engine," Marcus said. So even though Genesis3D does not support the content of "Ethnic Cleansing," it is unable to pull the license. Marcus added that hopefully companies would include provisions in their open-source licensing agreement that protects against their code being used to create objectionable material.
Perhaps the most troubling point for Marcus and others is that these racist videogames target a younger generation. Pierce said "Ethnic Cleansing" targets white males between the ages of 15 and 30. When asked if he thinks violent videogames facilitate violent behavior, Pierce answered, "I don't know the answer to that, and I have heard a lot of speculation in both directions in that. I have heard people say the shootings at Columbine High School were based on the fact that the two shooters were videogame players. But I am not convinced that this is an important cause of violence. I think the alienation of young people in this country is the main cause of violence."
For minority parents the challenge is protecting their children from the material and the people who play these games. Mark and Rebecca Turner of Brooklyn, New York, have a 12-year-old son. After seeing clips of "Ethnic Cleansing," their reaction was part horror, part anger, and part pity.
"Being black, being African-American, you know people feel like this... We know that this exists out there. I didn't even need this as a confirmation," Mark Turner said. "But the anger is that this is now being geared toward young kids in videogames, which they can now act out in videogames."
The couple said the scary part is that the players are acting out racist attitudes, and that if they feel such hatred, they might try to act it out in real life.

Racists Appropriate Videogames

Open-source software is supposed to simplify the programming of complex tasks. Why reinvent the wheel when you can leverage the technology of others? Unfortunately, white supremacist groups have taken this cue and are using sophisticated Internet gaming as a means of disseminating messages of hate. The latest trend involves perverting popular videogames that use an open-source code, transforming them into racist look-alike games.
The National Alliance released its first videogame, "Ethnic Cleansing," on Martin Luther King Jr's birthday this year. It costs $14.88 and can be downloaded from the Internet. National Alliance founder William Pierce said producing videogames is just another source medium.
"All videogames, or at least the ones I have seen tend to be, [sic] involve some combat of some sort. They tend to be violent action-oriented games. And 'Ethnic Cleansing' is like that too, but it is different, in that it tries to raise the racial consciousness of the player," Pierce said.
The game entices the player to become "more racially conscious," by starting a race war. It uses a first-person shooter perspective, like the game "Doom." The first level is filled with background images supporting "white power" and mocking African-Americans. When you shoot a dark-skinned character, the game makes a monkey noise. When you shoot Jewish characters, they say "Oy vey." You advance to the next level by killing a boss with a racially charged nickname. The second level involves traveling down into the New York City subway system, killing Hasidic Jews and Israeli Defense League characters. Players eventually end up in a face-to-face combat with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Open source opens the door
The Anti-Defamation League issued a report about games that, like "Ethnic Cleansing," manipulate the graphic look of popular games to spread messages of hate.
"The reason we were concerned about 'Ethnic Cleansing' is because some of the other games compared to it are simple. This is a detailed game," said ADL Internet researcher Brian Marcus. He said that so-called white-power groups find games that use an open-source code. "Ethnic Cleansing" uses a loose open-source agreement for the 3D rendering environment from Genesis 3D.
"They opened this up to the open-source community, saying that anyone can use these tools and that they had a very basic license agreement. The license agreement was as long as you show our logo, you can use this engine," Marcus said. So even though Genesis3D does not support the content of "Ethnic Cleansing," it is unable to pull the license. Marcus added that hopefully companies would include provisions in their open-source licensing agreement that protects against their code being used to create objectionable material.
Perhaps the most troubling point for Marcus and others is that these racist videogames target a younger generation. Pierce said "Ethnic Cleansing" targets white males between the ages of 15 and 30. When asked if he thinks violent videogames facilitate violent behavior, Pierce answered, "I don't know the answer to that, and I have heard a lot of speculation in both directions in that. I have heard people say the shootings at Columbine High School were based on the fact that the two shooters were videogame players. But I am not convinced that this is an important cause of violence. I think the alienation of young people in this country is the main cause of violence."
For minority parents the challenge is protecting their children from the material and the people who play these games. Mark and Rebecca Turner of Brooklyn, New York, have a 12-year-old son. After seeing clips of "Ethnic Cleansing," their reaction was part horror, part anger, and part pity.
"Being black, being African-American, you know people feel like this... We know that this exists out there. I didn't even need this as a confirmation," Mark Turner said. "But the anger is that this is now being geared toward young kids in videogames, which they can now act out in videogames."
The couple said the scary part is that the players are acting out racist attitudes, and that if they feel such hatred, they might try to act it out in real life.
