  1. Re:Vote with your money on Chained Melodies · · Score: 1

I agree with everything except the "vote with your money part". By "vote with your money" I would assume you mean don't buy crap to support the MPAA & RIAA.

Actually, I agree with the that too and have been doing that (only buying used CDs since the RIAA starting proposing copy protection). The unfortunate problem with this is that is it gives them fuel for going to Congress and saying "Our profits did not grow 10% this year. See, everyone is a pirate and not buying our stuff and stealing it online." They don't know (or won't admit) that they have ticked some of us off with their practices and we're not buying anything as a protest.

I don't know the current details, but US Airways has been pretty good about not having miles expired. I just cashed in enough miles for a ticket in Oct. 2001 and some of the miles were greater than 4 years old (probably 5 or 6).

As a reminder, Space Adventures is in partnership with US Airways for this promotion.

  3. MORE frequent flyer miles on Loki Aftermath Looks Bad · · Score: 1

Yes, but if you charge the tickets on your credit card you can get mileage for the cost of the ticket (typically 1 frequent flyer mile per $) as well as the miles flown.

My employer paid for graduate classes. I could fill out a form at school and have work pay directly at the end of the course. I could also pay with my credit card, submit a form, and get a check from work. I used a credit card that earned frequent flyer miles. I averaged a new free flight every 1.5 years with a large portion of the earned miles being from $2500 charges for class.

Of course, the few extra miles may not be worth the risk of not getting reimbursed. That is a separate topic.

"Better, if it can record not only the result, but the actual act of drawing, the presentation can be played back just like the speaker presented the stuff."

The mimio software obviously captures the drawing as marker strokes. The software has a playback feature. It is somewhat useful. Someone who was not present at the meeting can see the ideas that started forming but were then discarded.

  5. User Opinion of Mimio - Great! on "Smart Board" To Replace White Boards? · · Score: 5, Informative

Our group has been using a Mimio device for the last few months. We've used it when discussing issues. We don't have to take notes documenting our meeting discussion. They are saved automatically and available in color to distribute. Usually we just archive them.

The Mimio capture device used to fall down after a couple of days until we attached the semi-permanent mounting clips to the whiteboard.

We've been very pleased with our Mimio and it would suck to not have it after being used to it.

I haven't played with the MimioMouse functionality. That seems better for more organized presentations and training.

  6. Less Taxes? on More Mayhem From MSFT's Mundie · · Score: 3, Insightful

    From the article:
"If there is not commercialization there, a company can only exist based on ancillary manufacturing or services. If commercialization was cut down, investors would not support research and development in the IT sector, less projects would be developed, less taxes paid and the government would have less money to run universities, and all the other things that governments do," said Mundie.

The less taxes part is laughable. What about the billions in licensing fees that would be saved if open source (especially something truly competitive with Microsoft Office) truly flourished? This would result in greater profits and thus more tax revenue. Mundie obviously didn't point that out.

I am not a GPL advocate. I like the GPL and also believe that open source and closed source commercial software can co-exist. Let the better solution for a given problem win. Mundie is however spreading some serious FUD.

  7. Product Activation should equal OS CD on Not A Graceful Recovery For HP Customers · · Score: 1

Although I don't agree with the practice, I understand Microsoft not wanting OEMs to ship Windows CDs with computers since it made pirating easy.

Now that XP has the wonderful product activation to prevent pirating they should start shipping at least 2 CDs with all systems. The first should be the Windows XP CD and the second should contain all necessary drivers. Also, if the computer comes with Office, ship the Office CDs.

  8. Netflix not as good as it used to be, but still OK on Review Of Netflix DVD Rental Service · · Score: 1

I have been a Netflix subscriber for 2 years, so I get 4 DVDs out at once instead of the 3 they currently offer.

The selection is amazing and I usually get the first choice in my queue. I like reading the reviews and searching for similar titles.

The latency problem has been getting worse. Originally, I could tell them when I dropped it in the mail and they would send me my next DVD. Turnaround was around 4 days then.

Later it changed where you could tell them when it has been 4 days since you dropped it in the mail if you have not received an email saying they received it back. They would then send the next movie out. I would be able to drop a movie in the mailbox on Monday morning and claim I sent it out Saturday, since the mail is not picked up from the boxes between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning.

A few months ago, they removed that option. Now you can only report a movie delayed if it is over 6 days since you sent it to them. They also consider that lost and have warnings about "If you report them lost too often, your service will be cancelled." (not an exact quote).

I hope the East Coast distribution center happens. The service would be much better.

I can't prove you wrong and you are probably right.

I would not be surprised by the following scenario. Given that Rogers is planning on coming out with a tiered service due to d/l hogs, they would probably also want to change their EUA from unlimited bandwidth to unlimited connect time if it had been previously advertised as unlimited bandwidth. So has the EUA always been like that, or has it recently changed?

  11. Why I won't buy a Tivo for now on TiVo, PVRs Not Making A Splash · · Score: 1

There are two reasons I won't buy a Tivo. The first reason is the subscription. My cable box comes with a pretty comprehensive guide. I know its not the same as Tivo with it being able to find any show, but it is good enough for me. If use the cable box guide and a VCR commander and I'm good to go. No subscriptions. If I could replace my VCR with its tapes with a subscription free Tivo and use my cable box guide, I'd probably break down and buy one. The $300 for a tapeless VCR for time shifting is worth it to me. The $10 per month to tell me what is on when isn't. The bigger reason is I know I would watch way more TV than I currently do because I will always have something available. I waste too much time as it is. I came close to buying one in the fall and this reason stopped me.
