    What surprises me is that it's still taking quite some time for it to start popping up in actual production environments. Not sure what the reasons for this are.

    Huge installed 32 bit codebase.

    $1200 price tag for little speed gains.

    Unproven platform.

    I think thoses are good enough reasons. Also, many hacks are in place to allow 32 bit systems to do a lot of stuff 64 bit ones can do, for example, creating files > 2GB.

    Yes, they would last forever in space, however, space is surely out of their temperature specifications, and they would probably be too small to use from thermal contraction. But that's just speculation...

    I was just repsonding to the offhand way the original poster said he "threw it in as swap", as if swap was some non-critical thing that you can throw junk drives in for.

    I'm doing testing with some unusual swap configurations, and I can tell you, the Linux VM doesn't always handle swap very gracefully if it becomes unavilable suddenly for some reason, or if something else goes wrong. There is a high likelyhood of a deadlock.

    RTFA, they last anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks depending on the coating. Exposure to laser doesn't seem to be the factor, seems to beoxidation due to exposure to air.

    The only alternative would be to hire decent staff - which costs even more money. Blockbuster is about PROFITS not TURNOVER and would happily reduce its overall turnover to increase the profit margin.

    If they really cared about their employees, they wouldn't subject them to Nazi-eque hair follicle drug testing that will detect drugs used anywhere within the last 3 months.

    (I avoid Godwin's law because this is my first post to the thread. :)

    You can try to get a lawyer, but I doubt you would get much. Freedom in the USA means freedom of speech, it also means freedom to fire people you don't like for whatever reason you want. (Except for a few reasons, such as skin color, religion, etc).

    350,000 to 3.5 million years is pretty close to 8 years old, on a geological scale.

    I'd say if anything, this proves that the dating is accurate.

    Odds of winning depend on the number and quality of entries received.

    As always, IANAL, but... :)

    When you state "odds" of winning, that implies a certain randomness to the game, which in some states makes this a sweepstake, instead of a contest of skill, which is VERY bad. That means it is most likely void in many states in the Union. (or subject to rediculous restrictions) Beware, and lets hope Google retains better lawyers soon.

    I believe they pay the fees to patent your stuff (a few thousand at most), and then take a cut of any future profits you might get from said patent.

    I'm sure they only accept the better ideas for this anyway, so it's like venture capital from a loan shark sort of.

    Yeah, but so far (unless I am doing something really wrong), rsync over ssh here locally is dog slow, something like 600 KILO bytes/sec over gigabit!

    I'm going to troubleshoot it eventually, but I think a lot of it just has to do with the way rsync works.

    I think it should be dismissed out of hand. Most MS vulernabilities are severe, basic, remote exploits.

    A lot of the Linux "exploits" are very subtle, and very difficult to exploit. Sure Linux has some glaring ones too, but we find a lot more of the minor ones because of so many people looking at the code, and the fact that every one of our potential security bugs is made public, whereas it's impossible to know how many minor exploits are silently fixed with no announcement on the MS side.
