    Well, from a contemporary perspective, yes. No other series of events has had as much impact on our current state. In the grand scheme of things, probably not.

    Perhaps I should have specified "human initiated."

    Also, this is an opinion. It's wrong from every perspective but mine.

    Look, I understand that you like to think of yourselves as "revolutionaries" who are forging some sort of wonderful new utopia. Who wouldn't want to take part in such a romanticized battle? That's all fine and good. You vs. The Evil Empire. Great. Have fun.

    But you've streched all this way out of proportion by comparing the most signifigant event in world history so far with Open Source. You're not quite there, yet.

    I agree that usability is important, and that sites should provide text only versions. However, you're assuming that because it's inaccessible to the handicapped it must be wrong. Bicycles aren't accessible to people with no legs. If you can't stand under your own power, you can't ride the tilt-o-whirl. If you were born without a head, stay out of the hat store.

    I agree that we need to cater to the lowest common denominator, but not just the lowest common denominator.

    Good point, there. Some of us just can't find the time for fritterware.

    When you see someone with their operating system's default setup, you can conclude one of two things:

    • they are too dense to know that they can customize it
    • they are actually using their computer to compute
    It's a damned shame there are so many more of the former than the latter.

    Never tried that.

    sudo -u [user] open [whatever] returns:

    kCGErrorIllegalArgument : initCGDisplayState: cannot map display interlocks.

    kCGErrorIllegalArgument : CGSNewConnection cannot get connection port
    kCGErrorInvalidConnection : CGSGetEventPort: Invalid connection


    So that's no good. Will look into it .

    The dot thing is annoying. Make sure you contact apple and let them know.

    Skeleton Key will let you run things as root. It's not perfect, but it works.

    Use the 'open' command in Terminal to open something in the GUI.

    You've got to remember, this is a very young operating system. It's only going to get better.

    The average user doesn't need to know. The advanced user will read Apple's techpups, then post it to macosxhints.

    Ok, so, just because I am a troll, this gets modded down as a troll, even though this wasn't a troll? I don't get mods sometimes. When the linked article mentions that they are catching up to the mac, and I think that's a valid point of discussion, that's a troll? I'm honestly trying to post a valid comment here.

    To top it off, some non-troll posts an inaccurate rebuttal and is flagged as informative? Fact : you cannot change IP filtering settings without a reboot in Windows 2000.

    Go ahead and mod me down for this one. I don't know why I let it bother me, I guess this just seems totally unfair. It seems like every time I try to fly right here, some arse mod comes along and tells me not to.

    Perhaps I'm not reading the article right. No additional hardware needed to switch between a wired and wireless network? Excuse me? You're going to need a wireless card, and you're going to need a nic, one way or another.

    Then again, I may be an idiot. I'm not entirely closed to that notion.

    My iBook does that all day. It's nothing to get excited about.

    You just can't beat the Mac's ability to switch networks on the fly. Since windows can't switch network settings without a reboot, this is more of an OS issue.

    Seriously, folks, it's not like the VC flows freely these days, and sadly, the advertisers do have a big influence. Be glad /. lasted this long on that one banner ad. I'm sure /. management has figured out about how many people will leave because of the ads, and you're really not changing anything with your "I'm leaving!" posts. They know you're leaving, so long.

    My only hope is that we won't get those goddamned big flash ads. Anything but that.

    My theory : mac users aren't into the conformity that win/linux users seem to enjoy. Nothing saddens me more than seeing narrow pages, or some arse getting FP with a legitimate comment. It's my daily fix of anarchy, seeing alan thicke die repeatedly, reading tales of anal cox jamming it to taco, and marvelling at the gaping wonders that abound here in trollldom.

    I love you all, trolls. ACs can suck my holy nuts.
