The Pre is not exactly selling like hot cakes. So does it really make a difference that they have nine million free programs that all the other phones have too. They should be looking to lock developers into exclusivity just to be able to differentiate from the other phones.
Oh and just so you know for certain it's not a failure the exact window that opens after the boot is "Microsoft has added a critical update to your computer and a reboot was required". This usually happens when I don't use the windows box for a while.
However the cost of entry for the tool chain nearly $400.00 as their free compilers won't allow you to use the compact framework or third party libraries is much higher than any other tool chain for any other phone and the non compete clauses in the user agreement is egregious. And all of the other competitors use nearly the same base tools with some minor differences in their Ides so they do get a commonality of bug fixes.
Each phone has its own restrictions for other purposes but not like MS. MS is losing non-phone compact framework devices left and right.
Another reason to choose the iPhone to develop for is the iPod touch, which has a far greater market than the iPhone alone.
Android is also picking up additional devices left and right to add value to applications for that OS.
The sluggish user growth of the Pre is a deterrent to long term investment after the initial spate of apps is through. But it is relatively cheap to develop for and may have some commonality with the other web based application frameworks. Additional phones and carriers may help to alleviate this also.
But an overwhelming number of todo lists, tip calculators and floppy clock apps for an OS that no one uses is still a steaming pile of crap no matter how you present it.
At least the cost of entry is enticing, and the debugging is easy.
Yeah the bit about Apache is bad but the rest is completely trustworthy, sure, sure, what color is the sky where you are?
Well I had the tool installed but I uninstalled it because we decided to use a different machine to administer the phones. When I run the updater utility it doesn't try to re-install it. I can't find even the remnants of it on my system. But don't let that get in your way. 100% dead on it is then!
Yes Apple had the best product which is why Microsoft stabbed them in the back when they were contracted to write Office for the Mac in 1984. Office for the PC didn't exist until 1987. Because of that contract Microsoft was given the keys to the Apple OS and managed to write Windows and win the law suit that would have shut it down. So anything that Microsoft did after 1984 has everything to do with Apple. And windows '95 was equivalent to Mac's os' features in 1987.
The actual difference here is that even though the two mini-vans do exactly the same thing with most of the same parts, they are in fact not the same. Some one has glued a Plymouth Voyage badge on a Nissan Quest.
Actually neither is the case. Apple makes it easy to connect new hardware and it well documented. Apple is at home in the enterprise and at home. This guy used a very bad example in his post or he is incompetent.
Actually your logic is quite flawed. Microsoft is a convicted actual "Monopoly" that used anti-competitive means to keep that monopoly and force their products on manufacturers who then were forced to give it to us in order to stay in business. Apple has neither a virtual nor actual monopoly. Apple has very competitive products that outsell their peers.
Because "iPod" is not a generic item or human interface device your logic is flawed. Now if Palm told the truth and declared themselves to be a "Smart Phone" you would have an argument but only if iTunes was engineered to be a generic "Smart Phone" interface user, which it is not.
Commonly-used proprietary formats - VHS, DVD, CD, ATSC, HD Radio, Digital Radio Mondiale, MP3, MPEG2 or 4, AAC, AAC+SBR These are also known as WINNERS!
when Itunes sees a non-ipod, it simply treats the gadget as a file storage device and dumps the songs to the Palm, Insignia, or other gadget.
Simple, they are not obligated to engineer a way for their competitors to utilize a product that they spent the money to develop.
by forcing us to buy only Apple-branded hardware
You are quite free to buy anyone's hardware that you want but if you want the features that WE engineered you must buy ours. This is called product differentiation.
We are raising commercial morons these days it seems.
Apple is using capabilities of the USB spec to disable interoperation with other manufacturers' equipment
Why is it anti-competitive, Apple wrote the software in question to work with their players. Why do they have to allow other players to sync with their software. They spent the engineering money on the hardware and the software. You seriously need to re-learn what anti-competitive means. They are doing this in order TO compete. They need a way to differentiate their product from all the others, so they write a piece of software that works with their players. They own the market but not by being anti-competitive by being very competitive.
In the news this week, due to weak Pre sales, Palm Inc, lays off workers. It did boost their stock price nicely though.

My exact settings, and yet I get certain "Critical" updates that cause a reboot whether I wanted one or not. Go figure.
whoosh!
But it says that bad things will happen if I turn off the automatic update. Automatic restart was off by default when I installed the motherboard.

well the "iPhone Killers" to date have spectacularly failed to even dent it.

Actually you are a total idiot and didn't bother to even look for other software. There's plenty and it works very well for iPods.
Microsoft regularly reboots my machine without any intervention on my part. Where's the outrage.

No I can't find the Apache server other than the one I installed on purpose.
How many free passes does Microsoft get before you start to question their infallibility?
There fixed that for ya
You are correct and thank you for the summary, much appreciated.

But that is clearly wrong because only one vendor makes "iPod" devices. "iPod" is NOT GENERIC.
The actual difference here is that even though the two mini-vans do exactly the same thing with most of the same parts, they are in fact not the same. Some one has glued a Plymouth Voyage badge on a Nissan Quest.
Dude you seriously don't know what you are talking about. Please stop buying Apple products vote with your dollars and get out of our hair.
