Actually having a Unix compatible environment plus a real Desktop environment with support from major vendors is reason enough to switch if a) you need _some_ commercial software for jobs etc... b) can't get away from unix c) hate windows
LabWindows/CVI, was hated by me while i was taking a real time systems class. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't easy to use, or even easier to make all sorts of guages, switches, displays of all sorts. It should fit right in!
I don't know for sure but, it's probably something that isn't available for windows, say for instance GD's gif library for php (i'm just speculating with no research, maybe it does exist?). Regardless, it's the only way I can think of for this to happen.
you'd better believe that if i was encrypting my hard disk for some malicious reason, i'd have at LEAST a 60 character password. It'd probably be bigger than that. My gpg passwords are over 30 characters.
I have to agree with you. Most of the web is a pile of monkey poo. There are very few sites that actually live up to the term "good design." Some are well designed from an information standpoint, but not well designed in the visual sense.
As I understand it, Frank didn't put up the site again right away because he needed motivation to redesign it. He was unhappy with the current codebase and design and used the server problems as a "fire under his ass" to get the new site done. He has posted a statement on oswd.org explaining the new difficulties which Aaron has caused.
I use free software as much as I possibly can. However, I like to get the most of my hardware, and the last time I checked, if I want to use my airport extreme card on my Powerbook, I have to use Mac OS as there are no drivers to support it (please correct me if I'm wrong). I also like to be able to use my scanner to it's fullest potential and other hardware that I have, which are only supported with Windows and Mac OS. Thus, my operating system of choice on this powerbook, _must_ be OS X.
I'm going to get modded down right away, and this post will turn into dust, but here goes.
1) READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING
2) UNDERSTAND THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING
3) THIS GPL CLAUSE ONLY APPLIES TO SOFTWARE THAT ALREADY PROVIDES A METHOD TO DOWNLOAD THE SOURCE CODE.
3b) THIS MEANS THAT IF GMAIL IS BASED ON FREE SOFTWARE AND THE SOFTWARE IT'S BASED ON HAS A USER ACCESSIBLE FUNCTION THAT ALLOWS THE SOURCE CODE TO BE DOWNLOADED, THAT USER ACCESSIBLE FUNCIONALITY MUST REMAIN IN TACT IN DERIVATIVE WORKS.
4) THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU MUST RELEASE THE CODE IF THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR DIDN'T.
you can edit an sgml file in vim which includes tags for say, INSERTING MEDIA CONTENT. this is not offtopic and is a valid solution. while vim can't save to a pdf file, a pdf file coudl be created by another program from the text you wrote IN VIM.
yeah, it's funny as most people see something about FreeBSD and immediately assume that the kernel is freeBSD. I think the gnu/hurd people were on to something when they decided to use mach. it is a great base for doing what you want. of course they have no changed their minds again (will we ever see a stable hurd?). Luckily OS X brings mach to life, and with it's user base growing and growing, i couldn't be happier to be using such an interesting kernel.
actually this isn't true either. MacOSX has a FreeBSD based compatibility layer, but in reality is Mach based.
This also causes some problems. The guy at http://www.kernelthread.org/ recently had a contest which was based on a huge problem with the way processes are handled in the compatibility layer and how certain things arent actually ever seen to mach. Thus causing kernel panics in certain situations.
What's the point of showing off PC-BSD by using screenshots of KDE? They could have been taken right off of KDE's page. I can understand screenshots of the graphical installer, as this is PC-BSD specific, but if I'm not mistaking, KDE looks like KDE on virtually any platform.
me: ok george, i'm not supposed to like you, so i'm gonna watch this film like *this* and if i don't like you it's your own fault.
george: ok fans, i'm not supposed to write good films, so i'm gonna write and make this film like *this* and if you like it, it's your own fault.

YAD - Yad Another Dupe. Geesh, make your acronyms recursive. Especially in this case, where it'd be duplicating...
to write what hasn't under an OSS license so that everyone should be able to use the software regardless of their income
I'm sorry, but I don't remember income ever being apart of it. It's always been about Free as in Freedom, not as in beer.

I will make him aware of the post. I'm not sure why I was modded funny. I'm serious. If anything +5 serious.
I work with him, and he is currently re-coding the site and it should be up soon.
I do not know anything about the 'political' drama that Aaron claims, nor do I know if it will be resolved.

Weird, when this came out the other day, I could have sworn it said, "included."
This is correct, you can watch it on your tv with the video out cable that is included with the ipod video.

Do people not read the actual post anymore? He blatantly states that he lives in Missoula Montana. According to Mapquest, that's nearly 8 hours away.
you're forgetting that the slashdot crowd knows nothing anyway.
