Does firefox listen on a particular port while it is running?
If this bug were exploitable, then it could very easily install an extension (which is what this bug was all about after all). Once installed, it has access to all of XPCOM, including the networking stuff
Even Windows Media Player opens your preferred browser now
The problem is MSN. I have no idea about WMP, it gets replaced by Zoom Player (as closed to replaced as is possible anyway) every time I set Windows up for someone.
I have no trace of Outlook or Outlook Express on my system.
You have no trace of the icons you mean..
Go learn something and try some real arguments next time
OOoooooh, that hurts. I think I'll take the day off, so I can go sulk now. Hahahaha
I hope jar signing becomes easier to do. It would be very nice to have a bittorrent extension to fetch updates from whoever signed them. (which would probably be whoever compiled them)
I find that people tend not to even read the things on their screens. When they ask me "What do I click", I ask them to tell me whats on the screen and most times they figure it out themselves. It's sad but true.
How do you help people in Windows if you don't use it yourself or have a box running Windows nearby to help you in giving the user on the phone "click-by-click" instructions?
By memory usually.. images.google.com is a great help too. For example
This breaks the 3rd party market on Linux machines.
Hoorah for that. We've got enough binary only crap already. Thats probably why there's no Acrobat reader for Linux. How could they compete with kpdf, gpdf, xpdf already installed.
Only to a certain point though. IE will still open from Microsoft apps, and Lookout will stay hidden away in there anyway. Sure you have choice in Windows too, but you have to fight for them.
but what do you do with the CDRom drives, DVD drives, USB ports etc... ?
Take your pick. I didn't worry about that though (my only USB device is a mouse), and I probably only touch the cd drive once or twice a month. I routed the ATX power button to a switch on my desk, though I use that less frequently than the cd drive.. I bet you it wouldn't be too difficult to put an access panel in the wall, and put the mobo right in there with ventilation at the top to remove heat. Then you could even build a mini tower to hold your removable media drives, and run the cables for that through as well.
I'm not sure about the GP but I maintain a few web pages for friends. Having IE available with Wine means I don't need Windows installed at all to test with. That's very handy.
Most of these make your system quieter setups are just way too overboard. I took a low-tech approach, and jabbed a 1" hole in the drywall, and put the box in the next room. Plenty quiet enough for me.
Just to clarify: The government didn't own the phone companies
They most certainly did here. MTS was privatized in 1996, when they had a billion dollars worth of debt at a time when other telecoms in North America were reaping record profits.
Anywhere that I have lived, the only local phone company has been bell canada.
That situation is improving though. I'm a big fan of Shaw's Internet after suffering through Telus DSL in Edmonton, and MTS DSL here in Winnipeg (which is absolutely the worst service I have ever seen). I'm looking forward to switching my phone over as soon as I can.
I just figured the average slashdotter smart enough to figure it out
It's just a shame that in gaining your infinite wisdom, you had to give up your sense of humour.
Not all of us live in cardboard apartments, with 25 other apartments within Wi-fi reach.
But most of us have a window somewhere and/or exterior walls.
the people you're leaching off of? They're paying for broadband.
Yes. And I thank them very much. In my case its the university campus down the road. I don't even think they care, they advertise the damn thing.
so why the hell didn't they make it a bittorrent link?
Why the hell didn't they update the bittorrent link you mean.
Posted right in the middle of the US lunch hours no less.
Some of us are in different time zones you insensitive clod.
(Sorry, it's been a while since I've seen an insensitive clod accusation)
Fork over your half of the cable costs, bro!
Go get a wifi card. Most any one will do. People still pay for broadband?
and it's likely to come back with IE7
Now you're making my argument for me. This is the best discussion I've ever had on Slashdot. I'll be over here if you need me.

Unfortunately it's not enough for an update to _exist_.
True. But it's also not enough for a bug to exist either. It has to be _exploitable_.

some people actually consider the situation of a person other than themselves from time to time.
;)
The Buddha says there is no you and there is no me, only "us".

Oh wait a minute.
But XP boots so quickly (and doesn't always require a reboot anyway) that is doesn't bother me much.
It bugs the hell out of me, and I don't even use Windows. Usually when I deal with Windows, its over the phone helping someone repair it.
"Hang on its rebooting"
Oh how I loath those words.
And Firefox and Opera. And Thunderbird, and Pine.

Yeah, I'm sure my neighbours would love to have my noisy ATX box in their bedroom!
Haha, yeah definitely don't do that if you live in a bachelor suite.
and what Windows apps do you need?
I'm not sure about the GP but I maintain a few web pages for friends. Having IE available with Wine means I don't need Windows installed at all to test with. That's very handy.
I probably should have read the beginning of that thread. Hah. Sorry guys.
If that's the case, it's worse than useless.

Well thanks for the link. I enjoyed it anyway.
WTF is offtopic about that?
Moderators suck.
