    In any case, it'll take an IT guy to set things up for you. It doesn't make sense to buy your way into a restrictive contract.

    And let's be clear: Windows does not interoperate with any other operating system.

    OS X does all the work. Linux does all the work. And Linux is by far the most extensive and extensible operating system in the world. No question. The quality of free support and information available for Linux is by far the best in the world.

    I agree that the RPM distros leave something to be desired. So does Debian. But things are progressing insanely fast.

    I'm cheering for Novell. The Microsoft overtakes Novell/Novell builds infrastructure to debase Microsoft timeline will make a wonderful bedtime story for my children someday.

    I tried compiling myself a 10-inch vibrating penis, and it didn't work. Maybe I was misusing portage.

    Anyway, I switched to Arch. A wide variety of pre-compiled penises are available. I highly recommend it.

    Microsoft just indexes the search results from the Google and Yahoo image searches. It then leaves them with about 200,000 results to dig up on their own, which they can get from their sponsors.

    What was missing was the openoffice-en package (not i18n-en files... BAD GEEK! BAD!). And I added openoffice-spell-en. I think it's a little under 100MB total? A little bloaty for my tastes, but it is an office suite.

    Check out Arch Linux, a distro targeted to 'competent users' that has a wonderful package manager. Dependencies are built into packages. Optional dependencies are usually not listed, and even if they are, you can use the Arch Build System to make your own package from the Arch stock PKGBUILD.

    I installed the openoffice package and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run until I realized I hadn't installed the i18n-en files.

    I really take issue with people who make the distinction "American" in situations like this. How about Russian? Or would you not care then?

    I think the potential to be investigated by Big Brother is more threatening than the Iranians. And it's really interesting that you chose that wording, because it's becoming that way. The poster asks if we're only censoring an "oppressive regime" as if it makes a difference. It's NOT ok for China to censor information and provide only its perspective.

    And you know what? It's not OK for the United States of America to do it, either.

    Also, man, "Do what's right" is very very subjective. Lying in the state of the union 2002 (? was it 2003? I've been out of the country) saying there are thousands of tons of nerve gases, mustard gases, etc to send our people to war. And the people who are RESISTING are wrong?

    Never has 'WTF' been more fitting.

    I think the request for the Linux community to match what Bill Gates has donated is kind of absurd. Because I commit acts of kindness and donate time to worthy causes when I don't have the money.

    Plus, there are plenty of people who think vaccination is really bad for you. While I don't necessarily agree with them, they make some interesting points. So MS-haters can use that as yet another reason to bash him. :-)

    I deliberately *don't* differentiate between advertisements and search result pages when searching for tangible goods.

    But you have the distinction between ads and search results. Which is all that matters. Sometimes you see an advertisement that demonstrates something you want, but it's good to know it's an advertisement. The problem is when people can't distinguish, not when they choose not to discriminate.

    So... no, I wouldn't guess that there is something wrong with the results. Simply something wrong with the way the report was written.

    Or read. The report seems fairly well written, and fairly technical at first glance. It's a pdf, so I can't search the document for instances of the word 'actual,' but I think it might be the poster's interpretation.

    Considering the fact that Apple is working on its own MS Office replacement, it's interesting that they're providing a tutorial on how to use Openoffice in OS X.

    To me it's clear that their motive is to give people a temporary, difficult alternative so they don't buy MS Office X so when Apple's office suite comes out, they will have a higher likelihood of converting those using Openoffice due to the lack of investment and non-standard Aqua look.

    Very clever.

    Treat life as a game. It's a fun game, whether you're keeping score with dollars or human lives. Or better yet, both. There's a 99% probability that your optimal strategy is the same as everyone else's: kissing a little ass to get ahead.

    I don't disagree, but I would like to make it clear that the game you choose to play is entirely up to you. It seemed inferred in your post that the two valid options for the game of life are money and lives, when that might not be a game that's fun for some people.

    Just trying to be constructive here. Good post! But play the game of life however makes you the most happy.

    Even though you don't really make a point, I kind of agree with it. Although really, I think that the problem with drugs is that less intelligent people have a higher tendency to get involved with drugs. Not only that, but they have a higher tendendency to get heavily involved in them, or get involved in heavier drugs. Or to just plain rely on them.
