  1. Lets form a club on Ask Slashdot: Am I Too Old To Learn New Programming Languages? · · Score: 1

Trying to bridge the gap between developer and manager for the last years didn't work, you get pulled in too many conflicting directions
Reality of coding versus the imaginary world of management, snr management.

I have a new position (switched companies) where I can leverage my technical knowledge but manage an application, employ other skills too.

Every Java book I have started..I stall at around page 51 - partly just because you need a tutor who can answer all those dumb questions.

  2. Old Generation ? on Sony Lawyers Expand Dragnet, Targeting Anybody Posting PS3 Hack · · Score: 1

Sony used to be innovative , I have sony products : but is this action really excusable ?

The world has moved on, popular culture encourages that people hack everything from their toaster to the PS3.
SONY wake up - you are doing the opposite of what you should be doing.
This will hit the main press and it will look so bad.

Change your ways to embrace the new world - not even Apple makes such a fuss about "the inevitable"
All Steve worries about is keeping his "one more thing" a surprise.

  3. The harder you try to grasp sand on RIAA Sues 12-Year Old Girl · · Score: 0

the more slips through your fingers.

12 year old and a 71 year old have made the news this time.
When are they going to get it that CD's are too expensive and that there is a lack of good music ?

They just keep inventing these cute front boy/girl groups completely on image, and there is less and less good new music coming out.

  4. All of our servers are **missing** on Is it Just Me, Or Is Our Mainframe Missing? · · Score: 0

You see the IBM ad about all of the servers going missing ?
Turns out they replaced them all with a single IBM mainframe.

Maybe this is the reverse, maybe Dell broke in and replaced their mainframe with 1024 workstations - and no one has noticed yet...

  5. Why on Brazilian Rocket Explodes on Launch Pad · · Score: 0

I have to wonder why everyone wants to send a manned rocket into space ?
Is it some kind of "we can too" ?

The space race was originally between USSR and USA, do other countries feel they need to spend so much money in order to feel on par with the USA ?
I think they could spend the money elsewhere improving the living conditions for their nationals.

  6. Returns Policy on SCO Wants $699 for Linux Systems · · Score: 0

If I return the original Linux CD which came pre-installed on my computer . . does that mean I get 699 dollars from SCO ???

  7. UFO's on Geothermal Activity on Mars? · · Score: 0

maybe they are vapour trails from invisible martian UFO's ?? or vents for underground works ???

  8. Video input ? on In-Dash DIN-form-factor Car PC · · Score: 0

I had already started to look at building something like this to put in the car somewhere to record video, front and rear so that I could prove / disprove whatever the police were complaining about.
I did see some embeded Linux PC104 boards with PC Card expansion in Linux Journal too : gps or celular modem ? You can call your car and find out where it is !

  9. Remove the offending code! on Gartner Says Delay Linux Deployment Due to SCO · · Score: 0

How long would it take to remove the code they are complaining about and make a release to the public ? Hopefully thats not taken as an admission of fault - but could also clear up the arguements from above about not being able to safely deploy Linux now because of infringement. Kind of funny for me though ... those Caldera shares I bought a few years ago that became almost worthless..maybe one day I will get my money out of them ;-)

  10. modded? on Eclipse in Action · · Score: -1, Offtopic

If you want to use Windoze for games : go ahead, but do you want the government workers doing this too ?
Isn't the whole topic here about MS lobbying the Government to say that their own expensive and closed software is beter ?
WHAT IF some government has someone working at Microsoft putting little back doors in the software for them ??

If you can't see the source you don't know whats in it.

If you look at my comment, it does not say which OS is best. It does in fact say that there is a choice and that one of them is cheaper than the other and that as a result of using (say) Linux, you will have a better understanding of how things work.

I have Win XP at home, SuSE Linux, YellowDog Linux and (my favourite) Mac OS X.
    XP is for office admin,
Linux for learning (Java, C etc)
and Mac OS X for creativity. Now that Photoshops and GoLive are both native : I am back to being productive.

  12. Dumb Windows v. Intelligent Linux Users on Microsoft Battles Free Software at Pentagon · · Score: 1

What kind of user do you get out of a Microsoft environment (hint:DUMB) compared to the kind of user you get form a Linux environment (hint:Skilled).
The government should realise that not only they themselves should be using Linux but also their citizens because they will be better skilled as a result.

Microsoft is in decline, their revolution has past. As much as I am an Apple evangelist, I would admit that it was Microsoft that comoditized the GUI interface.
But thats the point : anyone can do it now.

There is a choice : closed expensive box where anything could happen inside OR open software that the government could use with their own ammendments / additions. And save money.

Usually a seperate box also for 'May we sell your address to other parties too'
