    It seems likely to me that a manufacturing company will have access to more than one key, and could change the key they assign to a DVD player every week/day/hour.

    This would mean for example that instead of blacklisting all Sony model Foo DVD players they would instead only have to blacklist Sony model Foo DVD players manufactured on July 4 2005 between 1223 and 1323.

    Internet worms that snarl online networks can render VOIP lines unusable, and experts at AT&T (Research) say VOIP conversations can be monitored or altered by outsiders.

    They sure went to a reliable source. VOIP can be tapped? Interrupted?? Why, it's impossible to do that with conventional phone lines!!

    Actually, the real danger are the federal employees who don't update their horribly vulnerable software, open random attachments to their emails, click on the pop-up ads telling them their computer is insecure, and give their passwords out to social engineers over the phone...

    I get frustrated everytime I hear a comment like this. If I leave my door unlocked and get robbed it does not remove blame from the thief or make it my own fault that my own was robbed. (It just makes me an idiot.)

    These 'dangerous' federal workers aren't dangerous at all. They're clueless and don't know any better. The dangerous ones are the script kiddies doing the attacking and the 3l1t3 h4x0r's writing the exploit scripts.

    ... whatever. I don't see how people can complain when we can get speeds that are a couple of orders of magnitude faster than what we had 8 years ago for only two or three times the price.

    I'm yet to decide if this is good news or bad news. OSI's response seems to completely destroy SCO's filing... and they've found somebody we all love to hate to take up their cause.

    How many times have I heard (and said), "this is it!! this is what will take down microsoft" only to be dissapointed. This time, though...

    i read the paper, but i don't see what is so new with this. the suggestions it makes seem to be similar to methods for email encryption and spam filtering that are already in place.

    joe emailer hasn't taken the time to figure these existing methods out, that's why it seems as though they're not working. i don't know what tripoli is going to offer that will get joe off his butt and get him signed up with a "Pit Certificate Authority".

    I've got the hurd installed... and although I almost never use it, being subscribed to the mailing lists offers me insight into kernel development.

    Linux was created years before I knew of its existance... and now that I'm interested in understanding how it works, it seems like I missed the boat...

    you know, call me crazy, but this sort of thing really scares the heck out of me. I don't wanna start a blame M$ thread, but they're a company with NO actual interest in implementing security properly... and look what happens... Joe User's computer running win98se that he hasn't upgraded since he bought the thing is now a weapon... and there are millions of Joe Users...

    not having to move data stored in registers to memory may help performance, but I think that this would be more of a convenience factor than anything else.

    The "minimal effort" claim deserves some scrutiny as well. Sure, intel could do this, but wouldn't it mean that support for the new registers/instructions would have to be written into the compilers? Then everything recompiled on the new compilers? ... that would be one huge "apt-get update" ... hope there aren't any bugs...

    so you want us to decide what's more important to you? I'd say give it to the world, but that's my own opinion. that's what this whole thing is going to be... opinion. what's more important? money or ideals? it gets trickier (as mentioned) when you've got to put food on the table. Trickier still when you consider the investment (time and money) needed to see your invention pay off. as with any big life decision you just need to look at all the courses of action and their consequences, and chose the one that suits your life goals best.

    granted, it's cool... but I'll be impressed when it makes it onto the market. I can easily see this falling into the "really-cool-but-never-gaining-widespread-use" category.

    plus, they mentioned that "The turbulence is due to poor fog feeding construction." but the time it takes for this to be developed, marketed AND find its way into more than 3 homes will give plenty of time for alternatives to arise that don't blow away when I leave the window open.

    different tools for different tasks. i started in KDE (gnome was too complicated for me at the time), and it helped me learn how to survive w/o windows. now I'm prefer gnome... but both serve their purpose.

    it's also entirely possible that their sqabble creates a healthy competition that is improving both systems.
