  1. Re:Why McDonalds? on Organizing Sim Protests · · Score: 4, Informative
Actually, there's plenty of reasons to protest them. While they're good for the American economy, they're bad for the global good. Why? They buy their beef from 3rd world nations.

At first you would think "You idiot, it just helps the economy of third world nations." Actually, it does the opposite. The profit is so good for the land owners in these South American countries that they've converted their crops (crops that sustained the country) into cattle fields. So, while the land owners get wealthier, the poor that don't farm get poorer by having to buy imported produce...or pay inflated prices for domestic produce. In addition, rain forests are being chopped down in South America to be converted to cattle farm space.

I eat at McDonalds every once in a while and enjoy it, don't get me wrong. But whoever says that people who do protest McDonalds have no basis for doing so are fooling themselves.

The PDF file is one of the absolute worst standards to come along in the computer industry in years. It sucks. Yet everyone insists on using it. I cringe everytime I write a manual, convert it to PDF, and know that 9 times out of 10 someone's going to have problems either reading it, printing it, or reading their print out of it.

I don't care if it's open source or geek chic, or if it's difficult to work with....just give me something else to use before I go insane.

Sure, the formatting in newer versions of Word isn't backwards compatible to the formatting in older versions, but that's not to be expected. Formatting doesn't become an issue if you have the newest version of Word though, and the newest version is always backwards compatible. The only thing it goofs up is shoddy formatting (formatting that wasn't done as it was supposed to be done but "looked right at the time").

"Why does Open Office have to do something that Word on it's own doesn't?"

To be better than Word, of course...which is ultimately the goal of Open Office as I see it. If Open Office's goal is to create a free alternative that does most of what Word does, it's suceeded with flying colors. If the goals are a bit grander though, such as taking over a large segment of the word processing market, it's going to have to do everything Word does and then offer something extra.

At least they have Open Office to fall back on. It's pretty intuitive software, especially if you know Word.

I wish I had that option. I'll be one happy man when Open Office can preform all the functions Word can AND the formatting, etc. is fully compatible with all versions of Word. Until then I'll be forced to use Word XP for all the nice little features it has...well, that and the hundreds of documents I edit every week are all in Word and ALL use the advanced formatting / markup features.

You guys are all missing the point. The donation from Indymedia is to support free speach, not to give kids in Ecuador a free computer. With these computers, Ecuadorian people will be able to show the outer world life within Ecuador through the use of the internet. This all leads to globalization, not anti-globalization as quite a few posters labled Indymedia.

Indymedia is only moderately left wing. They're about trying to show world views of current global/local problems. The only reason many people view them as extremely left wing is because they talk about issues such as animal rights, womens' rights, environmental issues, violence/war, and governmental issues. Frankly, if you see these issues as left wing, that's pretty sad. These are issues everyone should be concerned with...and most of the world outside of the US speaks about openly. Indymedia about the closest thing we have to unbiased news in the US. Think about that next time you turn on Fox News and watch your daily dose of sensationalism

Ugh. "To me, positive rappers is an oxymoron." This is just the same as saying all rock is bad, all country is bad, etc etc. Sure, the stuff you hear on the radio is all gonna be trashy...that's what sells. It's the same reason reality tv is so big now. Voyeurism and smut sells.

And, there are plenty of great rappers that make it to the record store...you just don't know their names. Two great ones have already been mentioned (De La Soul and Del). Plenty of others could be added. Do yourself a favor and go down to your local hip hop store (if there is one) and ask them to hear something good. I'm sure they'll probably play someone you've never heard of. You might actually like it...because it will probably have a message...and it'll probably be about something you've never even thought of.

I will say this though. The majority of white America is extremely sheltered. Even in the most backhanded of ways, the rap you hear on the radio has a message. Whether it's positive rap or gangsta rap, it's the voice of the urban America. Maybe instead of complaining about rap music and trying to censor the world, maybe we should focus on the root of the problems: poverty and the education system. Maybe if some of these people were given the same chances you had in life...well...maybe they'd be more like you...

Actually, the whole scene make quite a bit of sense in the context of the film. Dooku and Yoda both had the brief battle with the energy and telekenesis bit. They both figured out that they were equally matched as far as knowledge of the force went. They weren't going to go anywhere hurling stuff at each other. It had to come down to a physical confrontation.

As far as Yoda walking out with a cane and then proceeding to bounce off the walls...

As far as the star wars story goes, Yoda used to be a very feared warrior. Do you think he just forgot everything overnight? He may be old, but he can make himself jump into battle when he needs to. For example, when I'm 60 I'll still be able to run. I'm sure it'll take a lot more out of me then than it will now, but it'll still be feesible. I mean, it is a tad cheesy...but still. It's not totally out of context of the film. Plus, wow, did you see the crowds response to it? It was just plain out cool to watch...heheh :)

One day I recieved a graded assignment, saw the grade on it, and, without a seconds thought, walked to the english department and changed my major to Technical Writing.

Haven't regretted it since, either. Kids, when you're going to school for a major that actually involves lots of highly technical BS, shop schools. Just because a school has a highly respected program doesn't mean it's a good program...in all actuality it probably means it's just an extremely hard program with lots of weed out classes. Weed out classes = a higher number of sucessful grads. That's how you build a name for your program. If you're not going to be taught you might as well sit at home with a book and learn yourself.

Well, in theory it isn't a bad idea. Being produced partly because people are lazy and don't believe there's an effect to every cause and partly because some people think it's actually a good idea, this is the perfect example of the wastefulness of society today.

First, every here wants to compare this to CC's lackluster Divx discs. Actually, if this was anything like Divx at all it might be a halfway decent idea. What people don't remember about Divx was the fact that you held onto the discs and if you decided you wanted to watch the movies again, all you had to do was pay another "rental" charge. So, in essence, you could start a collection of movies that you could rent on demand without having to run to the video store. In other words, people kept these discs.

This new format, on the other hand, does nothing but creates waste. Not only is it more garbage for the landfills...guess what guys? This stuff doesn't biodegrade very well. And when it does, the foil inside is a toxin. Whoever pushes this technology should really wise up to this fact and provide DVD/CD disposal facilities at stores that sell these discs. Better yet, why not come up with a method to recoat/surface these discs and give people the option to sell the discs back for a fraction of the cost so they can be recoated and repackaged? Sounds like a deal to me.

...and all this just so some lazy slob doesn't have to drive back to Blockbuster. Maybe people should try netflix. I've been using it for years, I've saved money, and never once have I had to go farther than my mail box....
