    so even assuming the 100% efficiency, efficiency gains alone cannot make solar economical.

    Add the long term cost of the Iraq war, and the future
    war in Iran onto the cost of your petro power.

    It is not so cheap anymore.

    If the long term projected trillions of dollars went to a
    Solar Thermal array like the SEGS system we could
    power the earth with 10% of the Sahara Desert
    3 times over replacing all forms of power including
    oil, coal, nuclear, wind, hydro.

    In 2005 total world energy usage was 15 Tera Watts,
    the 10% section of the Sahara converted to 40% efficient
    solar thermal would be 50 Terawatts.

    It woule take up 350,000 sq miles though, and would be
    a monster to manage, realistically spread the systems
    through the deserts of the world so that the sun never
    goes down on the grid at some place in the world.

    You can make your own hydrogen with various methods.

    Wikipedia will tell you how.

    Electrolysis of water is the most straight forward method.

    The SEGS is the largest at 354 MW, but larger ones are soon
    to come online as other posters have mentioned.

    Total Solar Thermal for just 10% of the Sahara is over
    3 times all power used on Earth in 2005 at 40% Efficiency.

    So for those who disdain Solar thermal, it could make
    all the hydrogen for fuel cells for earth easily.

    Setting up the system and managing it will be a Herculean
    task thou.

    Some ppl own stocks in companies that would be hurt by
    a solar revolution.

    So you cannot expect ppl to embrace a technology that
    will impact their wallets.

    The US is gearing up on Wind, and Solar, but not at the
    pace it should.

    The afore mentioned oil and gas folks are the likely reason.

    We won't run out of natural gas for electricity any time
    real soon, but the day is coming.

    At the price of a nuclear plant, I'd rather see Solar Thermal
    go in out in the middle of desert in the more lifeless sections.

    I understand some sections of the desert have cities, and
    some life, but large sections ie. 10% possibly more are
    largely lifeless.

    PV is about 15-20% efficient.

    Thermal is currently 40% in some units,
    and a prototype achieved 60%.

    640 acres per sq mile, thus about 2.5 sq. miles so far
    for 350 MWatts.

    So Thermal Solar is a bit more promising than you might think.

    What could be done with the Sahara alone is staggering.

    It could power all of Europe and Africa with power left over.

    If they are waiting for Iran to do it, they may have a
    bit of a wait as they just recently fired up the next gen
    centrifuges.

    Once Iran has one bomb I doubt they will use it because
    they want it for leverage, as only countries with the
    bomb like Pakistan get shown any respect.

    North Korea is an exception because that war never really
    ended it is just a cease fire, and the rhetoric out of
    that country is about as bad as out of Iran, sometimes worse.

    If I was gonna fret I'd be more worried about who made
    the assassination attempt on Putin, and that the bear bombers
    are back on their flights just like they were during the
    Cold War.

    The change to all that is they don't carry bombs anymore,
    they carry Stealth Nuclear Cruise Missiles with stealth tech
    taken from the F117 shot down over Serbian.

    the US angling most of the rest Russia is feeling left out.

    Add that and the assassination attempt on Putin, and you got
    an angry man with 5,000km range stealth nuclear cruise missile.

    Worry about him, not the monkey in charge in Iran.

    You'd get very different results if you interviewed nearly 1,000 laid off IT professionals. It is really no surprise that people who already have a steady job in the field are under the impression that there are plenty of jobs to be had.

    There are:

    Optimists
    Pessimists
    and Realists

    The Optimist thinks that because his life is good or most
    ppl he can see in short range have a good life, then all is well.

    The Pessimist thinks that life is bad because most ppl he
    knows or his own life is bad, then all is not well.

    The Realist looks at unbiased unmanipulated statistics,
    and verifies the results with other realists.

    As a realist and IT worker of over 20 yrs I can say that
    millions of imported workers has made it harder to get
    run of the mill IT job.

    Specialized cutting edge new technologies where immediate
    results are required are still doing pretty well.

    But the cookie cutter coding jobs on older languages are
    sliding into oblivion at companies that do outsourcing.

    Some companies do not do outsourcing, but they are few.

    You may or may not know this, but the people who get H1B Visas are humans too. With families, feelings, etc. And as far as I know, they are no less worthy of a job than you are.

    I guarantee you if I came to your country and the politicians
    started favoring me over you and your family due to bribes
    paid to them you'd be upset.

    I also say that if you truly are a citizen of your own country
    you would stay there and work to make conditions better there
    instead of running away from it.

    The grass is often greener elsewhere, but not all 6.5 billion
    ppl are going to be able to find jobs in one location.

    In my country the pursuit of happiness is a RIGHT, and
    if millions of imported workers come in and take all
    the jobs and wages drop to where I lose my house because
    I can't make the payments you better believe I am not happy.

    This Visa shell game is corporations realizing it is cheaper
    to bribe a congress critter than to pay the employees.

    I hope my kids come nowhere near IT. The difficulties caused by the dot-com-bust in conjunction with excess H1B's at the same time left a bad taste in my mouth. I had a coworker get replaced by an H1B, and it was one of the saddest work-related moments of my life.

    Yeah I worked at Crisco *cough* I mean Cisco and about 6 months
    before the bubble burst the vast majority of new hires were
    visa holders. I got canned 6 months after the bubble burst,
    and most of the Visa holders kept their jobs.

    Most were NOT H1-b though, apparently through some handy loopholes
    they have setup a HUGE list of Alphabet Visas, and what follows
    is an abridged list of them.

    So as for not wanting your kids in IT, it doesn't really matter
    cause what the corrupt congress wants is to be able to bring
    in any type of labor to replace you at any type of job for

    to work for fast food wages, and some Visas like the L1 have

    can flood the US market with cheap labor like Tata.

    You must not work in the IT industry. You don't get promoted up the ranks, you get hired at another company for higher wages.

    This is dead on.

    The HR ppl have been told not to counter offer at most companies,
    because they believe that new job fear, and being on probation
    at another company will keep the sheep inline.

    Apparently with 86% considering moving on up, they are wrong.

    Imagine HR being wrong about something as hard and as fast as
    they work, the blinding speed, and diligence, *gag* *puke*

    Ok, couldn't stomach my own bullshit there.

    Yeah I can see HR thinking one thing and reality being another.

    You read it and took offense.

    You can take or leave whatever you want from any words,
    and freedom of speech is a right.

    Not all ppl will say something you agree with.

    As soon as you realize that, you can start to
    comprehend what the founding fathers meant.

    I don't have a problem with Europeans coming to America,
    it started off with trade, and fairly amenable terms.

    Some ppl on "both" sides turned it into a blood bath.

    I will say that once it reached the treaty stage though,
    the natives were lied to time and time again.

    Try to keep your emotions at bay when you read the post,
    and you will get the point of my statements.

    I wrote it sarcastically, not hatefully.

    We go in and liberate Iraq, but Burma can rot,
    Darfur can rot, Rwanda can rot, etc etc etc.

    The motives for Iraq are the NO BID contract for Halliburton

    We get food to ppl in Ethiopia without a problem.

    The problem is the Warlords horde it and dole it out
    for loyalty to their cause.

    Shipping goods is not the issue, china is now the master of that.

    The smart way to do this would be with no Distribution at all,
    ie. save the fuel costs and have the growing facilities
    locally instead of just one location.

    My post explains that the food can be grown densely in a small
    area on non arable land, and thus most countries around the
    world could do it as well.

    They just choose to be corrupt and kill their own ppl.

    As morbid as that sounds.

    To me, these measly "over 240.000" people don't really matter. Many of them probably didn't deserve to live anyway, others might just have contributed to the solution for the over-population of our earth.

    Among these people could have been the next great scientist,
    or someone that could have contributed to the world in a
    significant manner.

    If all the ppl in the world were put in Texas, everyone would
    get roughly 1,152 sq feet.

    So to me the over population hysteria is just a myth.

    Food growth with vertical hydroponics could took the place
    of large land plots and actually be cheaper once the
    engineering is fine tuned.

    125 million lbs on 256 acres, ie. less than .5 sq miles in one yr.

    10,000 sq miles would be 2.5 trillion lbs. and that is
    just 100 miles by 100 miles.

    This is with just conventional hydroponics, not Vertical
    Growth High Density which yields 20 times standard soil yields.

    If half the area of the farmers in the US that are PAID to
    grow nothing did this it would feed the world MANY times over.

    It needs to be done diversely around the world in areas
    that are considered non arable, because hydroponics works
    on land that is not even good for farming once you get
    a decent water supply and some type of nutrients.

    One natural loop method is fish in the water, and insects
    for their food, and the insects as food for each other as well.

    Catfish in Vietnam get up to 646 lbs.

    Sorry, but I just had to laugh at that translation:

    Chinese was becoming a very complex language, and still
    today there is at least Cantonese and Mandarin, perhaps more.

    The people of the government decided to simplify the language
    and thus why some of it reads that way when translated.

    Also their language is not based of latin like most of Europes.
