    I have know several ppl that have worked for
    EDS, they all say the same thing .

    I am not sure your refering to me,
    but I am not a cream faced geek having
    just returned from the base in Cuba .
    Where they keep SOME of the Taliban
    and Al-qaida, and having done IT support
    for the base there .

    I got burned real well the first several
    weeks I was there and was there for a year
    just having returned a few weeks ago .

    I have little to fear , in fact here I am .

    Yes, there is a HUGE difference .

    Unfortunately he uses fear to control
    those beneath him, and will kill a man's
    entire family if they do not show
    unswerving loyalty to the regime .

    I wish we could simply kill him and be
    done, and to be honest that first round
    of attacks with cruise missiles tried
    just that .

    They tried to kill him and his top ppl
    after receiving information from inside
    Iraq from operatives that thought they
    knew where he would be in a certain time
    window , but it did not work .

    The operatives were Delta Force and CIA .

    They had tapped the phone system, and
    were monitoring high level calls .

    The lull that briefly ensued was to see
    if they had got him, but after some research
    and discussion they decided they had missed
    him and resorted to the only way they know
    how at this time .

    However if you know an easy way to be rid
    of Saddam, and his regime, then by all means

    ILLUMINATE US !!!

    the statues, and photos of Saddam, and
    after the Gulf War they beat his ass back
    in 19 out of 22 provinces .

    If we would have helped , Saddam would have
    been out in 1992 .

    I have friends that were THERE, you have
    hollywood dipshits running their mouths
    because they wanted Gore for prez .

    Why you ask ???

    The H1-b visa quota has not been rescinded ,
    more foreign labor to be imported for less $$ .

    The L-1 visa program is now sweeping thru
    insurance companies in connecticut and
    large portions of the staff are being dumped
    for cheaper L-1 labor .

    The L-1 visa program is going to make the
    H1-B visa program look like a JOKE !!!

    There is no cap on the number of L-1 visas,
    that is right, it is unlimited !!!

    They just use the clause that says they
    have a branch outside the US , and they
    have their loophole !!!

    bankruptcies, forclosures, and ppl goin postal .

    I feel lucky I have ratholed away ALOT of money,
    and am living ultra-cheap right now .

    I have been thru this cycle of crapping
    on ppl while the economy is bad before .

    I am taking the time to study and get some
    more certifications .

    They can find someone else to be super tech,
    while the other ppl are getting promoted .

    Find the better unhappy ppl in your
    company that are fiscally responsible
    people and quit and start your own venture .

    Something that takes advantage of the downturn
    or has to do with emerging technologies that
    look like they will do well .

    Ex.: Wireless , Hydrogen fuel cell's , etc etc .

    As a web page churner, you may be limited
    by your skillset . This area is kinda
    saturated right now as you yourself have
    pointed out .

    In any event, good luck, and try the idea
    as a part time endeavor and do case studies
    on how well other ppl are doing in the sector
    you may be considering .

    Companies in times of a labor glut really
    do not care much for their employees unless
    the market starts to climb back up and they
    fear being left high and dry .

    Concrete is what the Aqueducts are made from .

    Although one minor engineering detail is left
    out, the CHEAP CRAP concrete made quickly
    with VERY FAST setup time is not as good as
    concrete that is allowed to cure slowly over
    a MUCH longer time and has expensive clinker
    added to it .

    Concrete made to last , lasts , as seen in the
    Aqueducts and the huge multi-ton blocks lifted
    out of the harbor in Alexandria Egypt that
    are now believed to be parts of the Great
    Lighthouse of Alexandria that fell into the sea.

    With the sea working on it, it survived the
    fall and the centuries, quite impressive for
    not being steel re-inforced .

    Quality will stand the test of time .

    Greed and the bottom line gets you the ,
    DOT BOMB BUST ....

    Farscape is watched by ppl outside the US as
    well, especially seeing how it is made in
    Australia .

    It's following is bigger than one might
    expect as it is multi-continent .

    If it has 1 million viewers, ie. it would be
    less than .5% of just the US population .

    Apathy is very powerful though, so it depends
    if ppl really give a damn and are willing to
    donate a cpl of bucks a year , and or if
    Farscape will put up a support site with
    banner advertising and sell memorabilia and
    gadgets and what-not's .

    If they get some ancillary monetary support
    structure setup they could MORE than cover
    the cost of the show .

    Another point I forgot to mention, do
    not mod this up, I will look like the
    almighty karma whore .

    Microsoft has mentioned its preference
    of the AMD 64 bit architecture, why do you ask ??

    Perhaps it is the fact that they have written
    a 64 bit version of their OS before for the
    DEC Alpha, and that is what AMD used for the
    foundation of their Athlon .

    This will be a factor I am betting .

    One thing you are missing .

    Athlon was designed using technologies from
    DEC Alpha 21064 and 2162 RISC processors.

    Their "farther" Dirk Meyer came to AMD and
    brought in an engineering team who succesfully
    developed the Athlon .

    The lead design engineer for the Athlon
    was the engineer that built the DEC Alpha EV6,
    and thus a higher base architecture
    was designed in and was already forward thought
    for 32bit and a 64bit world .

    This was not well known by most ppl outside
    of design circles, and hardcore hardware ppl .

    The former DEC designer has insight into
    64 bit design when Athlon was released,
    and the fact that the old irongate boards
    were based on the DEC EV6 lend credence .

    A big suprise may be coming if they pull this
    off, and I cannot wait to see it if it works .

    Benchmarks for 1st pass BIOS's are "always"
    lower until they are tweaked and optimised .

    For that matter the OS's often have to be
    tweaked to take full advantage of them .

    In time the Clawhammer, and Sledgehammer will
    show their true abilities .

    Amen to that, look at the horrendous things
    ppl have done to each other over the centuries.

    My god the number of ppl that have died are
    staggering , and women and children too .

    I do not agree with the current liberal bias,
    and believe we need to oust Saddam .

    I do not like war, but it will only be worse
    if we wait, and could very well be World War 3 .

    In fact, I'd say we already waited too long .

    Desert Storm was the right time .

    Even here in the US the cavalry would kill
    the american indian children and women .

    It has been just as bad in every country
    around the world, except for maybe the
    true Tibetans, they seemed quite peaceful
    til the chinese ran roughshot over them .

    I served in the US Navy working on missile guidance radar systems .

    I'd call me a confused christian .

    I believe Saddam is evil, and there is 20+ yrs of history to prove it .

    I do not like war, but if we shirk this, it is only going to get worse, and be much harder to deal with in the future .

    As for Wahhabism, I learned of it online, and doing ALOT of research .

    Alot of Muslims did speak out to this information, it did not get alot of air time .

    If you talk to peaceful but leary muslims that are from the middle east they will explain it to you better than I can here .

    Here is but a precursor to all the info on wahhabism, I even spelled it wrong (grin)

    I wanted to understand this secular view of Islam , and as there are MANY versions
    of the christian faith .

    Wahhabism gains alot of its popularity thru taking the disenfranchised and giving them a focal point for their unhappiness .

    That focal point is the US at this time . Alot of religions use their members as a means to an end, and to achieve alterior motives.

    I feel that is partly what is going on now .

    There are alot of angry ppl out there looking for someone to blame for their life being unhappy and unfair .

    Little do they know that alot of americans live in trailers, and are considered poor white trash.

    My family was this for quite some time.

    Only education at a university got my mother free of it, and only going into the military
    and learning electronics and then computers on my own got me free of it .

    Our media portrays us very differently than what alot of us are really like.

    There are alot of good ppl here, and alot of bad ppl here, but to be honest that can be said of any country .

    The liberals are sure that peace will eventually win out over war .

    The middle east is a powder keg, we need to go take care of this, but unless we do it surgically we may set off the whole damn region .

    I think Israel's nukes is all the keeps them at bay really .

    Jordan to some extent seems to try to be joining the 21st century, may allah bless them .

    Saudia Arabia, hehe, well...Let's just say that is where MOST of the captured Al-qaeda came from , and Whabism is HUGE there .

    Whahism is the strict, inflexible interpretation of islam, and also has a side order of hate . It is larger to blame for what we have experienced .

    2 major sects of islam splintered when Mohammed died, this was one of them, but believe it or not it is the one thought Mohammed would least likely support . Go figure ???

    Like I said earlier, the christians have their past track record of Crusades and Inquisitions, it just took the Muslims longer to build up to this and thus they have arrived at the same ugly place .

    Indeed, what more in the name of Love.....

    Ignoring this situation is only going to make it worse to deal with down the road .

    If you as a liberal feel the jews in israel should be left to be annihilated come right out and say, you believe in free speech right, free thy tongue !!!

    If you as a Muslim believe in this great jihad, then you think you cannot lose, speak loudly and recruit more to your cause .

    It will make it easier to identify the idiots .

    In the midwest we are buying ammo, and stocking water and food .

    There are 30,000 middle eastern men with expired Visas in the US from all the scab labor visa programs from the DOT BOMB blow out .

    The state department and INS is offering zero effort to deport these ppl . In california they were so lazy they asked them to come to the police station and report themselves , and were then summarily arrested .

    How pathetic .

    Those that show up dutifully are punished, those that don't are not even sought out .

    The ones that are most likely your REAL issue .

    If the government does not pull hard on its neck til it hears a loud pop, we are all gonna die from ass-phyxiation .

    Use it as a Methane Fuel cell so we do not
    have to burn it and release the hydrocarbons .

    Be a great way to power a large portion of
    the planet, the sewer systems just leak the
    gas now or burn it off in open flames .

    Be a big project, but it could be well worth it .

    Better is relative ...

    Linux is cheaper, and is more flexible .

    It is open source, and it free except for
    the learning curve, and the cost of migration .

    Migration even in the M$ world can be painful
    with their own damn OS, I have done of a few
    of those as well .

    1. Cost up front , TCO is variable .
    (if you KNOW linux well you can get low TCO)
    (If you do not know linux well, you won't)
    2. more flexible (less lawyers)
    3. open source (you get the community)

    Sun has 5 and 6 - 9's reliablility machines
    for telecom networks that cost as much a
    porsche a piece .

    If you want to compare $1,500 x86 boxes to
    these high end high reliability hardware/
    software systems .

    Linux is gonna lose .

    But dollar for dollar, the linux system is
    going to win . There is PC hardware out
    there that is more reliable than most , but
    does not carry a HUGE mark up for it .

    www.google.com runs on x86 hardware and linux,
    and www.mosix.com does as well now .

    There are ALOT of squid boxes out there now,
    and no telling how many Linux/BSD firewalls
    and routers .

    Linux is building a pretty strong case here .

    The city of houston chose linux over Sun,
    so did Oracle just recently, hardware too,
    they went with Dell .

    Sun's day in the sun may be at an end .

    The bottom dollar may get them laid off
    just like it has many of my friends .

    It is running on x86 hardware .

    It seems to work well, granted this is 2 different scenarios, but it proves it can and will be done .

    If ppl spent more time figuring out how to do things, rather than taken the default path of devil's advocate
    the US would not be in the shape it is in now .

    It is soooo much easier to say it is all crap, and type in CAPs and puff up like a toad .
    Loud does not equal right .

    I am not even saying I am right, but give it some equal consideration .

    Corporate loyalty to corporate royalty is like a horse with blinders following the buggy whip commands off the edge of a cliff .

    Fact is x86 hardware is unreliable, but then again Sun equipment breaks too, unless you buy their Ultra high end, money is no object, systems .

    Google even talks of this on their site.

    They just pop another box in and send in the broken one for diagnostics and batch reload via imaging, It's all automated .

    On a 1 for 1 basis the Sun boxes are better if you are willing to pay MUCH more for each one of them .

    Try telling the ppl at http://www.mosix.com that linux is just not good enough .

    They have been doing this for 20 years, most recently on x86 hardware .

    The collective compiling of all those linux boxes will amaze you .

    This is the new frontier in silicon, and in code, give it a chance before you condemn it
    becasue you are old school sun and own thousands of shares of tanked stock .

    Yeah, this is true.

    A total switch out is usually very painful,
    and ppl will fight it like crazy .

    Alot of it is not baseless either .

    Verify all aspects of software will work
    under Linux, and setup some kind of training
    for the ppl similar to a Intranet or
    just a video cd . This training can be a
    project unto itself .

    Make it a progressive gradual switch out,
    perhaps with volunteers at first , or ppl
    you are comfortable with making the switch .

    Make the needy, emotional, nuerotic freaks
    the last ones to get switched .

    Case I just bought was $150, but it is a
    SOHO server with lockable front and side
    panel with a 430 watt power supply .

    Good cases and power supplies are worth it
    when you have expensive hardware you are
    powering and housing .

    Cases with no filters lead to dirty parts
    inside, that is why most Sun hardware has
    filters on them .

    As for $2,000 for these machines, I agree,
    that is WAY over priced if you shop around
    on http://www.pricewatch.com

    Money saved build an extra server or 2,
    several extra desktop boxes for rapid
    replace, and house all the data on the
    servers with a RAID5 array with hot
    swappable drive trays with HOT standby
    spares .

    Cool thing is you can do this with IDE
    drives now and save a small fortune .

    IDE's tend to not last as long according
    to factory testing, so keep a few spares
    handy and you should be fine .
