You can get scholarships for being a minority - but we're not one of those
You can get scholarships for being married - but we're not that
You can get scholarships for being female - but we're not that
You can get scholarships for being RELIGIOUS! - but we're not that
Even engineering has more scholarships than computer science!
Basically I get totally screwed over because I'm not a member of a "minority" (true minority or 'social minority'), and I'm not a member of a religious organization that would hand me money just for being another irrationalite.
Scholarship awards should be based upon NEED pure and simple - ignore skin color, which genitalia you have, your religion. Infact technically i am a member of a minority - ATHEISTS, but it's about the only minority that doesn't get scholarships because this country is run by a bunch of theologues (*Cough*bush*cough*asscroft*cough*)
couldn't have said it better myself
some people forget that there were numerious Iraq resolutions, not to mention the terms of surrender - which you so effectively pointed out:D
I'm sorry, but you haven't a freaking clue what you're talking about. While I do not support Bush Jr in the slightest, or his "reasons" for going to Iraq the invasion was not illegal. There were only 12 years of UN resolutions threatening invasion if saddam didn't comply, he never complied.
It was right to kick saddams buttocks, it wasn't right for Bush Jr to kick saddams buttocks.
wxWindows (wxwindows.org) already takes the nightmare out of GUI programming, in a cross platform way. It's A++, even AOH3ll uses it [in communicator]. You know Scitech display doctor? Yep written in wxWindows!
You know what's funny about the Apple Newton, the guy that was one of the leading software developers for it (Steve Strong) went back to teaching computer science and math in high school after they eliminated the project and downsized.
I was truely blessed to have him as a professor. I generally dislike mac (now only because it's properitary hardware, OS/X is a very nice operating system). The newton didn't fail because of lack of ingeniuity, or bad coding. It was groundbreaking, and had insanely good programmers.
It was a device before it's time.
If you were to make a list of devices influential to hand-held computing the newton would be undeniably #1

It seems that SCO is having some success in proppying their stock up by making threats. Hopefully it won't last as even Forbes sees them for racketeers now.
SCO is also violating the GPL, shouldn't we be suing them!
I see a lot of talk (whining/b1tching.. take your pick) about "reinventing the wheel" when it comes to new desktop environments - that make it easier for John and Jane Doe to use linux. --- This is counterproductive, it's not "reinventing the wheel" to write a new window system because you think the previous ones "suck" as far as the average user is concerned. If Motif/Lesstif were really enough, would Gnome, KDE, etc even exist? NO
The UserLinux initiative is an excellent chance for us to penetrate into the mainstream desktop market and start making software houses recognize and implement for linux - because their target audience can finally use the system.
The list posted in the article looks to be a rather [complete] connonical set of programs.

Like a lot of people here I initially had a knee-jerk reaction in relation to the DMCA. However in this case it hit's home. I am a member of the FreeSpace 2: Source Code Project, our forums are on the gamespy network (http://3dap.com/hlp) and GameSpy wants to make a big deal out of the source code project with FS2 for download off fileplanet and everything.
So when I saw this I went ballistic and called for considering severing all ties with gamespy. After some investigation into gamespy's legal document I found nothing that clearly made their case. I had however overlooked Luigi Auriemma's "Patches" page, thinking it was just patches for his software. When I finally looked at it I am shown that I was quite wrong. It is an entire list of copy protection circumvention, which is clearly a DMCA violation (and should be), and a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Mr Auriemma is promoting piracy - including releasing information and files to patch UT 2003 Demo into UT 2003 Full Edition.
While GameSpy did overstep their bounds a tad in attacking his advisories, they are not heniously abusing the DMCA. While parts of the DMCA are henious, they are fortunately not relying on them, and not relying on the DMCA alone. GameSpy is right in attacking him for releasing "No-CD" tools that actually promote piracy along with other piracy promoting 'patches'. Mr Auriemma's "tools" are not required to show the exploit and should not have been released to the public, this just allows for 12 year old script kiddies to attack GameSpy servers.
After much deliberation I am not going to call for a break in relations between the SCP and GameSpy, and I look forward to continuing our current relationship with GameSpy. Although I do think they went a little far in naming his "security advisories" in the letter, I don't think it was henious - everyone is human.
So give GameSpy a break, not all uses of the DMCA are henious, and not all "security analysts" are benign. I am normally one of the first to attack DMCA abusers, but GameSpy isn't abusing it, and their letter doesn't need to reference it.
We wouldn't be having this conversation if they didn't mention the DMCA in the letter, but the letter would have been no less powerful legally had they not mentioned the DMCA.
I am a comp sci student at Iowa State University - (you know, where Atanasoff build the first automatic digital computer) - you know what they're obsessed with here - C++ and Java
I have never once met anyone who programs.NET, C# or any of that M$ crapola. First time I read the description of C# I laughed, it was described as a "cross between C++ and Java", and Java being a child of C++'s OOP features C# is really the child of inbreeding:D.
We get job emails to our CS UGRADs list all the time about "Microsoft This, Microsoft That" and our small contigent of microsoft fanboys loves it because they rarely end up with more than one application for a job.
Now when an email comes out about something that is C/C++, Java, or web developement in open languages: it gets flooded. I just applied for a position that had 90 applications, about 10 interviewees (including myself, no I haven't found out yet if I got it). The position I applied for is with a group that is looking to expand it's linux stakes, and generally seem to dislike platform dependance.
Just talked to Capzilla over from Unixcode.org - he's getting flooded with requests right now so be patient with his server.
Sometimes/. readers are like a pack of wolves to descending on a poor defenseless webserver.
Under the DMCA they have a case - since no matter why you break copy protection it's automatically an attempt at piracy
even if you're breaking copy protection just so you can listen to/watch/use the product _you_ _bought_ and exercise your fair use rights to make a backup copy.
[obvious]This is just another example of why the DMCA is a bad law [/obvious], It's beyond me how this law is still in effect. Curse all the politicians that supported this bill, especially the ones who actually understood what they were signing!
I have to agree with RoTK -- I watch movies that are going to be _good_ in the expensive theater first (Where I am at there is a $1 theater if you wait until the expensive theater drops the movie:P)
When you go watch the good movie you are using the your Almighty Dollar Voting Power (whoa.. that rhymed:P)
The Moral: Don't watch sh*tty movies in the theaters, watch good ones - and buy the DVDs to really great ones like Lord of the Rings (all three movies) - this will encourage those twitts out west to make more decent movies...
1) Servers can maintain lists of "temporary allows" -- Say you're out roving around the country and want to send an email like you're at home, but you're in a hotel using their LAN - when you login to your mail server it records a "temporary allow" record and any email transmitted from your computer during that "temporary allow" period has it's ID recorded and then for say a month the server holds onto that record and can be asked "Was email ID from HOST valid?" - "Yes, Temporarily Allowed"
2) Users can login and add "permanant allowed systems" - say you use have a permanant account with your university like I do with my cs.iastate.edu - say SPF, or what ever was implace and I moved off campus to my appartment (Which is happening) - I then want to be able to have my own SMTP - i can with my CS login and add my record to their allow list.
i'm sure i have left out some use-cases, give me more and I'll try and think up solutions!
They Guy over at Toad.com - while having started many good things - is being a blind libertarian [that's almost redundant] in asserting that "he can run an open relay if he wants to" - running an open relay 'hurts' other people, it damages their business, causes them to have massive ammounts of unsolicitied email, etc.
It comes down to a case of left-over teenage rebelliousness, why is he rebelling? not because he has a reason, but just because he has a problem with authority [whether it's individual or the group], even when that authority is doing something right/good

Why don't we make a very small linux distro that works with small puters with touchscreens and make a secure voting system.
Just to bite our thumb at them.
... to have it automatically recharge it's batteries when their low if it hasn't received orders?
