As many people have pointed out, the codec is frequently updated. Therefore, many of the to-be-released videos will not play on DVD players that you buy today.
So why not create a new standard, analogous to the VideoCD format, that incorporates the codec algorithm into the disc headers? Thus all that we need is a universal decoder that will look for the codec in the first sectors of the disc.
So, what number of sites does it have to be before it becomes wrong?
Frankly I find it rather interesting that Germany is censoring and banning pro-Nazi sites and literature that it doesn't agree with. Gee, sounds rather familiar to a Germany of the past...
Swing is much easier to create useful applications with; it's good to see that someone is helping go it cross-platform to the Mac, to where it makes sense with the system paradigm. Unfortunately the controls in the standard Swing package look a little too much like Windows 9X.
Perhaps the next thing we need is skinnable Swing?:-)
There is too much resistence to change in the Linux community. The problem is a simple one: in the minds of Elitists, easier is not better, it's "lamer", "suckier", or "for wussies". Thus, when someone comes up with the brilliant idea that the average person should be able to actually use the system, they're booed off. Yet these boo-ers are the same people who bash the mass market for using Microsoft or Apple's OS X. OS X is astoundingly good... a simple, intuitive, appealing interface on top of loads of raw power. That's what Linux needs.
Right now, when you install pretty much anybody's distro, you start up with an interface that has tons and tons of menus, icons, widgets, and whatnot, already up and running. It's an overload, and instead of trying to learn it, newbies are balking at it.
So why not have an easy-to-use kernel configuration system? Why not have an independent object model, where any distribution or window manager can use each other's dialog pages?
The only answer we seem to get is: "because it's for wussies!"
We used to have one of these AI circuits too......until the circuit picked up the Rush Limbaugh program, and then it hijacked the network and propogated "liberals must die" screensavers on all the NT workstations.

The attack has been described as a write-in vote for an unidentified third party candidate known only as "CowboyNeal". No information upon the identity of this third party candidate are yet known.
If I cannot control the equipment I bought with my own money, then I expect the content providers to pay for everyone's televisions. I think that's damn fair.
Otherwise they need to stay the hell out of my equipment, because it belongs to me.
I can see this kind of technology being abused to the 1,000th degree. Imagine software that would automatically use your previous usage data to force you to buy individual features that you use the most, the next time your annual subscription fee comes around? Or deleting all your home movies because they didn't carry a copyright tag, and thus could be illegal? Or finding the cops at your door because little Timmy downloaded his favorite song on MP3 or Ogg?
It seems that we, the mass public, are expected to give up the idea than when we buy something, it's ours. Now that even seems to include our hardware, not just our software.
There are some issues that I think nobody seems to be addressing, as in:
* Realistic fog/smoke -- not that 2-D fog which looks like a giant translucent grey pancake. Microsoft comes closer with Flight Sim 2002, but it's not quite there yet.
* Fire/flame -- again, nobody has created more realistic acceleration for this kind of effect. It's very important for many games.
Furthermore I would like to see fractal acceleration techniques for organic-looking trees, shrubs, and other scenery. Right now they look like something from a Lego box. In fact, fractals could probably help with fire/smoke effects as well, to add thicker & thinner areas which take on a "semi-random", but not an obvious pattern, effect.
I'm glad Intel is really optimistic about their processor. Now they need to either deliver the goods... or just add more L1 cache and two more direct memory functions and voila, Pentium 5.
It seems that in comparison to finding ways to rev up the clock speed, PC-based innovation in processors has stagnated -- at least as far as those innovations that actually reach the market.

If HTML needs so much pre-processing, perhaps it is time to standardize a new HTML, instead of writing all these incompatible pre-processors for it.

Is a flag for "Don't Allow Broadcast Company to be a Rights-Trampling Monopolist".
I suspect they aren't going to hold up the rollout to include this one though.
