The watches use 2 seperate oscillators (one 32.768 KHz the other 2MHz) in a closed-loop and temperature compensation to acceive the highest precision timekeeping ever in a quartz watch, so it does have geek qualifications before I get marked as off topic.
All my facts come from a BBC documentary which came under the perview of "The Money Programme" series, there were a few Profs and smaller operators like Texas oilmen who are getting vertually nothing out of their wells now, giving the dire warnings, and the bigwigs of oil saying that everything was ok. The Profs had maps and stats that they quoted and the bigwigs had but their word. I suppose it depends if you think the BBC reports well or not, I beleive they showed the arguments as well as they could, and on balance I found the Profs much more convincing. Its not when oil "runs out" that counts, its when it becomes uneconomic to drill it. I will look for some sources and post them here if/when I can find them, hopefully the BBC will have a transcript somewhere that quotes the relevant people.
Some estimates put the time scale at more like 20 year as some deposits of oil are uneconomic to drill. Now if the governments of the world were serious about cutting polution, and taking care of whatever energy crisis they happen to be in then they would have thrown a hell of a lot more money at fusion and we'd be a lot closer, and they should be funding zero point energy stuff too, even if it turns out to be worthless, its very very important that we try, because if we don't have replacements for our fossil fuels life could get very ugly for humanity.
Breakable yes, but even completely random one time pads are compromisable, as I recall an Egyptian spy in the US embassy in Ciaro was resposible for the compromising of one time pads that allowed the Germans to inflict heavy casulties on the British forces in North Africa during WWII. Once the British stopped communicating with the US ops in North Africa we started beating the living daylights out of Rommel. I also recall there was a French double agent that betrayed the SOE and that agents dropped into Holland were dropped right into the Nazis laps including the one time pads the agents used, so you see one time pads while technically unbreakable are capable of being compromised. My point was that the other way would mean that there would be no compromisable material at all as the only link would be in the agents head, therefore either a) they don't talk or b) they kill themselves before being taken alive, that way the system would fair better than even one time pads have in the field.
So say putting fixed length letter groups (say 5+ letters) from a daily common source through a secure hash algorithm like SHA1 would not produce what amounts to a a random output? And yes its secret algorithm + secret pointer to key text as opposed to a secret pad. I don't see the difference, to decrypt either you'd have to either compromise the pad or the pointer+algorithm to the pad, intelligence services have used numbers stations to do the same for years, all I am saying is that you could do the same thing by using commonly available sources to generate the pad rather than having to keep a compromisable pad yourself or have a detectable distribution of pads as with the numbers stations. I would have thought that this would be in practical terms more secure.
That assumes that non capital punishment cases don't get appealed, or that new evidence is not intoduced. Of course after someone is executed there can be no more appeals, so if there is an appeal / new evidence every five years or so and the average death row inmate is there for ten years rather than a 20-30 year life term you'd certainly expect the costs for life imprisonment to be higher, if you have a link to some data to backup your statement I would certainly like to take a look at it.
You do realise that they will just make more laws, hire more people, take a greater amount of tax and waste it on this sort of idiocy? Whatever comes after the Net of today will have to be predicated on the ability to defend itself from all forms of potential interference, legal and technical, thats the challenge.
Essentially every major world religion and culture advocates or prescribes chastity: no sexual partners until marriage, and only one after that with the intent to produce children.
And it has to be said some of the most popular religions also advocate stoning to death, having hands chopped off, waging Holy Wars and all sorts of other things. If you look at work on religious teachings about sex by non-theologains, there seems to be a concensus that sex is a very powerful drive, and therefore a very good idea to have to control over if you want control over peoples lives., so sex is just used as a weapon of control, in keeping the people in line, period.
You realise that we are ALL connected to large entities corporate and nation-state, and that pressure on one of those will yeild the result they are looking for. For example if it was a smaller operation they would go after those that provide connectivity, and yes I know that they are supposed to be common carriers, but with DMCA (in the US) they would need to invoke the Safe Harbour provision and cut you off, anyway you look at it, the Internet was not designed to be legally above national laws, even if JPB says so.
Of course that was not the case with the Yahoo Nazi Auctions, and besides havent you been keeping up with what the Council of Europe was upto last year see here.It is possible one way or another the governments will pick apart the freedom we have gained here, but then nothing is forever.
No, I see nothing wrong with the list, all the countries in the list have governments who promote the idea that their country is infallable, and who have a majority of the populice that concurs, in other countries we recognise more that we are fallible human beings, and therefore when it comes to somthing as final as killing someone we are more reluctant, it costs more money to incarcerate than kill, but thats the price we pay of being less than perfect.
3 words, Yahoo Nazi Auctions, I think that shows how the Net as currently constituted is actually very succeptable to the realm of government control, the Net of today could begin to wither on the vine as soon as Catholic counties ban any mention of sex and Islamic ones ban anything relating to alcohol, we could be left with a very neutered version of what we have today.
Why? All I am saying is that you know a pointer to a common untracable one time pad rather than having to exchange psychical pads, I mean you could just use a numbers station, or even an algorithmic combination of numbers stations, all you know is the source(s) and the algorithm which is safely locked in your head as opposed to having actual compromisable pad i.e. it cannot be stolen / copied by a double agent.
Other Einstein quotes that might prod the assembled masses of Profs might include -
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new"
"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources"
"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education"
"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts" (Sign hanging in Einstein's office)
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed"
Well he said it much better than I can, and here are a few others that might help -
"The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one" - Malcom S. Forbes
"Don't be afraid to take a big step. You can't cross a chasm in two small steps." - Anon
"You can't go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it's just a cage." - Granny Weatherwax, Witches Abroad
The easy way round that is to use a common text as the base for the cypher, say you start with a book, say the Bible or Koran and then use an offset encoded in each subsequent message for the beginning of the next pad e.g. page 4 paragraph 2 word 3, all you need to agree when you meet is a) an algorithm and b) the initial start point. After that as no one knows the text you are using and cannot decrypt the 1st msg and therefore cannot decrypt all subsequent msgs, if you're Osama or some other rich guy you can even change the books everytime, by encoding the ISBN as well. You could use daily online news, or newspapers in the same way and then not transmit any new one time pads at all. Online news would be a good source as some doesnt get archived and therefore the pad would only be accessable on that day, so law enforcement could not go back and try to decode the message retrospectively. I'm sure this has probably already been done, and evena plot point in a John Le Carre thriller or something, btu I thought I'd mention it anyway.
Well I did the same thing, in 8008 assembly while I was still in the womb in about 1.3ns from the sounds I heard my father uttering under his breath, unfortunately my only means of communication was via baby kick morse code, by the time they had decoded my work and burnt it on a ROM I was just coming out of the birth canal. Unfortunately life has been down hill ever since, maybe I peaked too early..
By the same argument Hitler was sane because he managed to launch a Blitzkreg over a large swathe of Europe. All these people have one thing in common, they believe they know best for everyone, and use whatever historical justification they can to reek havoc, there is only one way out take away the historic justifications, beleif in relgion is a big part of that, once thats gone, once everyone starts to realise that hey, we're all trying to life and take care of those we care about and there is no deity looking after us, we are on our own then, and only then will humanity be able to come together, otherwise I give one to two hundred years before we eliminate ourselves as a species.
They HAVE stopped, that's why we didn't have "intelligence" on this attack and why we can't infiltrate Bin Laden.
Perhaps you don't have the same press as over here, but I should point out two things a) an interview with a neighbour of one of the hijackers was broadcast here in the UK, she told how she contacted and warned the CIA of her suspictions, and now today here in the UK we here that the CIA DID know, and that they tare saying that they told the FBI who REFUSED to act. Whether it was a CIA or FBI clusterfuck they DID have the intelligence pointing to the perpetrators. Now I know there are conspiracy theorists out there that will say they let it happen so they could get more funding, but I take what a former CIA man was saying the other day, that the US "intelligence community" is like a room full of 3 year olds each with theri own toys trying to take toys off the others. Given that the insurance industry is going to be seeing tens of billions of dollars in claims coming in I can't wait for them to sue the US government for not doing its job and refusing to pay up.
So why did someone rate the post that pointed it out +1 Funny and my orginal post -1 Overrated, the joke was twofold, a) The Base as indicated above and b) the fact that the buying and selling of derivative options on the companies that have been hit yeilding around $50M for the terrorists. Please if you're going to mod me think about why I would post THAT particular joke at THIS time, thanks in advance.
And remember the shit they gave him afterwards for being gay? So much that he took his own life? Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it.
They are looking for the "hacker gene" so they can use genetherapy to weed us out of the next generation, so whatever you do don't let them take blood from you.. oops... should have posted to alt.conspiracy.us.ciggerette.smoking.man.is.going. to.get.you, oh well..
It just proves even big bad drug dealers need their pr0n! Mind you all that Bolivian matching powder wont have done much for little Pablo...
Well unobtanium is a rare element, some companies usually replace it with vapouranium for their press releases, see here
Well if I look at my left wrist I see a nice Longines VHP in titanium and gold which I got eleven years ago, guess I'm ahead of the pack as always...
Nice pic of the watch here
