  1. Bill Bryson on Sources of Intelligent Audio for Commute? · · Score: 1

Any book/audiobook by Bill Bryson. I particurally recoment "A Short History of Nearly Everything"

  2. Begs for direct oversight on How ISPs May Quietly Kill VoIP · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is a good example of where letter of the law and spirit of the law collide. The FCC lacks the expertise too adequetly monitor their charge. There needs to be another solution. Perhaps, more openness?

  3. People have sold their demographics for a lot less on Inside the Free iPod Offer · · Score: 5, Informative

For an uninformed or disconected soul, the "chance" for a free iPod is well worth selling out your vital statistics. I'm always amazed at how easy it is to convice someone to sign on the dotted line, and it's offten only for a T-Shirt.
This organization simply raized the reward, and thereby made the hoops you must jump through more elaborate.

As much as I like technology and baseball, and I think that Baseball is the geekiest of all sports. Who on /. cares about this book? Especially since it seems to be a blatant attempt by Conseco to make some cabbage while he can. And in this case, it seems congress is not above the same thought.

It seems inherent that if it is possible to manipulate the rankings to improve traffic to a website, weather for economic or egotistical reasons, a certain percentage if people will do it. Tivo stock tose to more the $12/share today. It seems that the expansion of services to their customers. both consumer and business who are hungry for more accurate statistical information, had a lot to do with the price drive up. I guess when it comes to consumer protection or the welfare of corporate investment, the companies eventually win out.

  9. Re:SCSI-IDE-RAID on IDE RAID Examined · · Score: 1

Ok, I have been looking at exactly this solution of a while. The produts I have found seem expensive for their makeup. I am very curious to know how these prodcuts are built. I have seen many SCSI-TO-IDE type converters (ACARD etc), but I don't see them as the solution used in these external, scsi addressable RAID solutions with IDE disks.
I guess my questions is simple, how do these IDE based raids with SCSI interfaces work?

  10. The Tricked Out Weber on I'm Just Here for the Food · · Score: 1

Considering this audience, and my own desire to try to build my own... Has anyone that has the book yet tried to modify their Weber kettle grill as he describes in the grilling chapter of the book.

For those who haven't read, he has attached a chimney and a hair-dryer to the bottom air intake of a standard Weber Kettle grill, the result is a BBQ Blast furnace for use in ultra high temp cooking... I love stir-fry, and I have a beat up old grill, I'm looking for a weekend project, why shouldn't I?

Considering the geek and hardware hacks that ./ has produced, I figure this was bound to be done by some one here...

  11. Ask Accounting!!! on Rolling Your Own Business Desktops? · · Score: 1

Chances are that you probably are depreciating the cost of the PCs you have now. You are also likely to do the same for new ones. But most accountants will have significant trouble depreciating the machines without serial numbers. As machines built yourself will not have. Plus, you need significant costs of goods to make depreciation feasible, and 60 sound cards, and 60 motherboards, and 60 CPUs, don't really add up to much individually.

Typically this is the main corporate reason for not upgrading machines piecemeal, I is often the reason that most companies buy from the Big Three computer manufactures.

I would defiantly check with accounting.

I personally will not send any money ear marked for "science" until the current administration takes it upon themselves to institute a science advisor. As far as I can recall, GW has been running without one since his swearing in. Hell, they even have the office space now that Hughes has packed up and moved out. Moreover, I really don't belive that Dick Chaney has any business heading NASA, despite his VP Duties.
